Apologies for any inconvenience. We will try to find a replacement.
I do. But like you have conceded the relationship between Merrett and Essendon is supposedly so bad they he would prefer play anywhere but.
I have also said it’s on his mangers to ensure a trade can actually be done at hawthorn before Zach commits there.
It’s on hawthorns and zachs managers to get Essendon a package they would entertain, otherwise the managers will have to find another suiter.
But I’m sure hawthorn will provide the necessary package to get Zach and it’ll be win/win, but let’s not pretend that Zach has all of a sudden lost trade value. Both clubs know his value.
2 x top 10 picks for a 30 year old is just insane. As I said, its way more than you guys paid for a contracted 25 year old Neale. Why would we give up so much for Merrett?
You wouldn’t do that. Think about a the future fas and players you miss out on."It's on hawthorn" is only a leverage point if Hawthorn are locked in and don't have the option to walk away.
It's on Essendon to find a deal if there is no possibility of him returning to Essendon.
If walking away from 'a' deal isn't an option, then that is the party that has to make a deal work. Not the other one.
So you can say it's on hawthorn - if we announce that we're committed to getting Zach to the club. That is the point at which we can't walk away because we've created expectation with our supporters and members etc.
You can say it's on hawthorn if Essendon is happy, or has a preference for Merrett to stay. Because if Hawthorn can't offer enough then they just keep Merrett
But you can't say it's on Hawthorn if Merrett staying at Essendon isn't an option. That totally flips the leverage. It is then on Essendon to find the least worst way to move him on. That could be to a club other than Hawthorn, sure. But if he can't stay then it's not on anyone else to make it right.
Desperation.

Hasn’t Essendon just said he won’t be traded?
What's your point?Hasn’t Essendon just said he won’t be traded?
Why do you think a third club wouldn’t be involved? Either directly or through preliminary trades to acquire relevant assets? Also Essendon fans thinking that there will be some three way deal regarding this, it won’t be
If it’s 8 and a F1 maybe a sweetener
That’ll be the bones
What's your point?
Saying he won’t be traded is making it impossible to come back to the club?
I think you might be taking the Essendon media departments PR a little too seriously.
Treating Merrett as a hostage that can't be negotiated for is not increasing what teams might offer.Saying he won’t be traded is making it impossible to come back to the club?
Mackenzie is playing VFL at the moment. Not sure what we'd be giving up pick 7 for him.Feels like everybody wins if it's Merrett to Hawks, Mackenzie to Saints, 8 and either 7 or Saints F1 (Essendon's choice) to Essendon. Maybe some later picks swap.
You read them saying that he won’t be traded as meaning it’s untenable for him to come back to the club?
The statements don’t mean he won’t be traded but certainly don’t mean it’s untenable for him to go back. Just like Petracca last year.
I think it could unlock the move for sure. We apparently have some interest in Henry Hustwaite, the slow, lumbering inside midfielder who is barely on the fringes of a midfield needing midfielders.Feels like everybody wins if it's Merrett to Hawks, Mackenzie to Saints, 8 and either 7 or Saints F1 (Essendon's choice) to Essendon. Well I don't regard Hawthorn as committed at this point. Certainly well down the road, but I don't think there's an actual contract offer agreed in principle or anything.
But if they do commit to him, has it happened?
Not sure that’s a win for MacKenzie.Feels like everybody wins if it's Merrett to Hawks, Mackenzie to Saints, 8 and either 7 or Saints F1 (Essendon's choice) to Essendon. Maybe some later picks swap.
lolI suggested if Saints were ok with moving on Hugo Garcia to return home (he is a Cannons boy) or Hugo Boxshal as the fringe player Essendon could use on top of pick 8 and a 2026 first from Hawthorn.
Why on earth would the Saints let go of either Hugo Garcia or Hugh Boxshall?I think it could unlock the move for sure. We apparently have some interest in Henry Hustwaite, the slow, lumbering inside midfielder who is barely on the fringes of a midfield needing midfielders.

If he requests a trade and successfully moves then I'd think he would call that a win.Not sure that’s a win for MacKenzie.
Petracca's teammates at Melbourne weren't slagging him off publicly though, were they?
Billy Longer was one I think. Which was back in 2013. The Lions and Hawks couldn’t find a middle ground. so the Hawks then switched targets and picked up Ben McEvoy, and Longer went to St.Kilda.
