Witnessed the clash, second too the ball all day, interesting talking too one south supporter, he said he can count only one player, who played juniors at south in the side. He said if the money runs out, they will be in big trouble.
Is it true Dunstan and smith both injured with hammy and quad injuries?

Massive Leo Barry like mark from Tim Smith with 10 seconds to go. His last quarter was incredible.

Park Orchards had 3 chances to win it at the death. A few questionable umpiring decisions went their way.

Not surprised when I saw who 2 of the 3 umpire were.........
some absolute howlers paid today. Both ways to some extent I guess but wow, a couple late that could have been game deciding.

They paid one against Park Orchards, in the third qtr I think, for a bloke running too far without bouncing when he clearly took a bounce right in front of the umpire. How none of the umpires saw that is beyond me. Everyone else did.

Another shocker at a centre bounce where The PO ruck completely mistimed his run and took the south ruck out before he could get to the ball drop. Somehow the umpire called it against the south fella. A terrible call.

difficult day to umpire with the wind and stoppage after stoppage.
The easiest thing in football is to blame umpires rather than players.
How about the poor ball use going inside 50.
Smith was a collosus but it helps when the the opposition kick the footy directly to the loose man in defence.

Haven’t blamed the umpires for anything. Simply saying they had a bad day.

Agree on the ball use, both sides guilty of long bombing with the wind at times when lowering the eyes may have been the order of the day.

As you say, conditions weren’t ideal for all concerned.

Went along and had a look yesterday. Congratulations to South on their win.

For a team that is full of imports and some allegedly getting paid ‘overs’ and with benefits outside the salary cap I was expecting a far more polished unit but perhaps I should give them some slack in a game that could have gone either way. Why both teams consistently 'bombed' the ball into the forward line and didn't change their approach going forward surprised me.

I thought Tim Smith was the difference, just played an amazing game. His last quarter was exactly what you expect from a leader when the game was in the balance.

As for the umpiring, it didn't influence the result but it was poor. Inconsistent and a number of missed 'obvious' frees not paid. If that is the best the league's umpiring group has I think there could be some questions asked. Maybe they had an 'off' day.

Unfortunately umpiring across the board is in a poor state. In the lower grades you have to take what you’re given. I’m sure there are a lot at our level do a couple of hours of a Saturday morning just for a quick earn and I’m surprised at how little some earn for umpiring lower grades. There are some doing goal umpiring that can’t move. Btw this is my observation whilst it is critical I don’t know what the answer is. Pay more puts a further burden on clubs and may just attract more people not suited to umpiring. 😊

Smith doesn't get the credit because he hasn't been in Premier but have been saying for a few years he was the best individual player in the EFNL. For what he can do - basically play as a key forward, a midfielder, or really anywhere around the ground (he was immense down back in the last quarter yesterday) - there aren't really any who can do it like he can.

That season a couple of years ago when he won the League B&F, league goalkicking and the GF BOG he was unstoppable.

He is 34yo now so past his best, will be interesting to see how he goes next year if he plays on.

Agree both teams looked very average yesterday and the occasion aside, it was a shit game of football to watch. I wonder how bad the wind and conditions were, may have been the reason because they are two very talented sides.

They will be at home in the Premier Division. They won't be coming down for a while.

It will depend how long the money stays.

There is nothing sustainable about what they have built - it is all based on cash - so that will determine things. It's no secret to anybody with any knowledge of the league (as so many clubs have had players poached and outbidded by them) that they pay massive money and are hugely cheating the salary cap.

The team had one SB junior in Bartels - they've done incredibly well out of Rowville and Lysterfield but it will be hard to keep that going. South Belgrave is a tiny suburb (a town even) that won't produce many players.

Juniors -

Rowville 6 - Daraio x2, Garner x3, Young
Lysterfield 3 - Wynd, Mazzone, Tucker
Rowville Knights 2 - Keily, Lieu
FTG 2 - Peters, Chapman
UFTG 1 - Smith
Scoresby 1 - Silver
Knox 1 - Windsor
GW Rovers 1 - Bromley
Narre South 1 - Degacz
Pakenham 1 - Muirhead
Berwick Springs 1 - Simondson
South Australia 1 - Dunstan

All SB are doing, along with many other clubs, is using loopholes in the salary cap to field good teams. I don't call it cheating, as the salary cap is designed that way. The leagues can put a stop to this tomorrow, but they don't. We've discussed this in many threads. I agree that the money will eventually stop, and in saying that, it won't be for a while.

How do the leagues put a stop to it ?

It will take the Leagues to come together and establish a combination of strict regulations, significant penalties for non-compliance through robust monitoring systems. You can achieve this with a strict salary cap and severe sanctions for violations. We have seen this, such as stripping Premierships, but I prefer the loss of points before the next season starts, or stripping points during the season, also a decrease in player points. In saying that, the leagues will have to invest in dedicated teams to audit and to investigate breaches, thus requiring statutory declarations from players, clubs, and, where applicable, player agents to ensure transparency. The penalty for lying on a statutory declaration has to be criminal. I would add fostering cooperation with players to buy in and ensure fair rules that protect the integrity of competitions.
