2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Was beginning to wonder about Rhyce Stanley. If Marshall goes there, could Rhyce come to us? But I did some digging and it seems Rhyce was set to retire earlier and Chris Scott talked him out of it, so I guess he is at the end. Even C. Scott talking him up for the later finals now might just be a rouse. Blowing smoke Geelong style. Straight from the old Ford chimney.

Really hope we are into Jamarra… seriously we are the perfect club for him… we have amazing leadership for our Indigenous guys in Brad Hill, Nas, and soon Liam Ryan… he won’t cost much if anything in the form of picks… our salary cap can take the hit if it doesn’t work out… sign him to a short term deal and back in our club to help him turn it around! He is an absolute jet when on song. Club keeps talking about shifting the needle… yes TDK, JSOS, etc help… but for all the talk of our club being bold, this would truly be…

Will be 35 in December and his body is shot IMO. Has had a great career and in hindsight never should have been traded. Our list management back then was deplorable

I have a feeling we have been monitoring him from a distance all year, and he could even be collected from the scrap heap, with talk that Bulldogs could pay out his contract. I'm not too sure how it would work (whether he can play for another team or at VFL level equivalent), but we are 100% a club that is looking at these types. I think Ugle-Hagen brings less backlash than T.Thomas too. If we are serious, we would structure a contract similar to how Geelong brought Stengle back into the AFL. (Who was AA and premiership player in his first season with Cats). BTW, just searched Stengle, and the first photo is of Jack Martin..

Rhys.

Yeah, we shouldn’t have traded him. But if we hadn’t, we wouldn’t have had the Hickey v Longer debates. Win some lose some.

It's funny I remember the crazy celebrating when we fleeced Geelong and Gold Coast for good picks for Stanley and Ben Long.

We ended up getting a combined 1 game I believe from the two players we took with those picks.

and right there is the argument as to why trading out experienced players for draft picks that you take to the draft is a high risk gamble

Way too much of this

Don't want Pertracca or Merrett, both don't fit our profile and will stagnate growth of other young mid fielders unless you move Steele and McLobster out. On top of costing far too much in value for what and how long they will add to the squad.
Imagine not wanting Petracca if all we had to give up was a player who is clearly surplus to our needs (Marshall). Insane

Disagree that Marshall is surplus to needs. For me he’s a required player, unless the deal is too good to improve. We’re a better team with him in it.

It would only really make sense if we moved one of Steele or Macrae on otherwise it's just stunting our development.

If we could be ~90% certain Trac is the last piece and difference between a serious flag tilt (or not) in the next three years (see Zerrett to Hawks, that would be their thinking) then you go ahead but otherwise it doesn't really make sense.

His value is seriously lessened if he is not playing as the first ruck. Obviously all hypothetical but Petracca could give us two A grade years in the midfield and then play as a forward in the twilight of his career. Would be stupid not to pull the trigger if all we had to give up was a forward who provides a good contest but has never kicked more than 15 goals in a season. Thats what Marshall is if he plays as a forward.

I would be working on the assumption that Steele is potentially getting traded anyway. Petracca a different player to Macrae and if our kids are good enough they will force their way into the midfield no matter who is in there. Not saying we would contend next year but with all the inclusions we might be closer than everyone thinks.

I wouldn't be giving away significant draft capital for Trac though...

Stengle is a great comparison. I wouldn't be against it but with strict behavioural conditions in his contract.

Petracca is 30 in 4 months, he’s had huge injuries and wanted to play in a contending side and with big club at that, which part of that screams out he wants to come to the Saints!! Don’t want him either, might as well keep Steele.

Obviously its all a hypothetical and I agree that its unlikely he would want to come here but we would be stupid not have a look. His season was underrated even though is ball use was rubbish in the second half of the year.

hawks midfield cracks in pretty hard. they're very under-rated i feel. just hard at it.

like you said though their ball use on rebound is amazing. seem to have zip when they need it, then just execute on kick and connection.

Worpol is a warrior but pretty B grade. Will Day is a gun and Newcombe obviously too. Then guys like Nash and Ward as combative types. Weddle was playing a pretty much full field game the other night and looked very good too. D'ambrosio on the outside pretty good too.

Write the same paragraph but sub all hawks players for current Saints players
