I agree - the roof is a big furphy. Rain is not a big issue down here and the wind issues you face at Bellerive and York Park are largely as a result of the lack of stands to effectively shield the ground from gusty days (which honestly, largely happen in September through November).

If the AFL had the right amount of stones, they would walk back the roof idea as a condition.

If the AFL held its nerve, thered be no team or stadium.

I wonder if the AFL knows how unpopular the roof is at Marvel? Such a strange condition. A 30k stadium without a roof should have been the condition.

Plenty of bands who play 8-15k cap Entertainment centres in all capitals as well that currently have no suitable Tasmanian venue.

Crkicket will go to the best available venue that suits it, especially for T20 and national fixtures. With corporate boxes, proper broadcast facilities and guaranteed match days, thats going to be the new stadium.

Those arent the only type of conferences they are generally thinking of.
But an 8k indoor entertainment centre and a 23k outdoor stadium are very different. If a band or group is looking for venues and they’re playing a string of indoor venues in Australia they’re unlikely going to switch their strategy and now play an outdoor venue in one location only. And Tasmania at that. It requires a completely different approach, equipment, etc

Yes it has a roof but in terms of logistics and acoustics etc it’s a stadium not an entertainment centre. Stadium shows have their unique set of requirements and approach and a band isn’t going to do indoor shows and then one outdoor show on its tour.

They’ll get some events yes but very limited scope here.

Edit - I’m thinking what they might get are one off shows by semi-big artists like how Kid Laroi did a one off stadium show in CommBank Stadium last year. However the location of Tasmania makes it hard, why would someone like kid laroi do a show in Tasmania and risk ticket sales when he can do one in Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane and guarantee it.

Please be sure to notify said bands. We've had bands play Adelaide Entertament Centre and the RAC Arena in Perth and then wander off to Aami Park in Melbourne. Its far from unheard of.

The location isnt all that hard, its not like they walk to hobart or anything. And mid sized gigs arent trucking semi after semi of gear all over the country.

I wonder if anyone besides the AFL in Australia has actually operated a football stadium with a roof and fully appreciates its capabilities.

Isn't there an urge so have a world class stadiums , outside of having a team in the league don't the people want global music artists have concerts , or international cricket matches , state of origin, UFC/WWE. or they do want it however it not that important .
I think AFL should tip it more money. How much do it's executives get paid for doing nothing alot.

Plus there will be an expectation if there is another expansion effort, it will come with significant capital expenditures to be borne by the location.

If not, it will be lawsuits.

There wont be lawsuits over this. Stadium was a Tassie Task Force suggestion that the League took up and both sides agreed to.

That said, stadium upgrades were the case with Gold Coast, GWS and the NRL in Perth. Its an expectation from all parties.

Lol, I don't think you understand the law.

What law is the AFL breaking here by imposing such an extravagant stadium condition on the licence? Unreasonable maybe, but hardly illegal.

Didn’t say the lawsuits would succeed but would be viewed as negative discrimination (which was my poorly conveyed point).

Still doesn’t stop someone from pursuing some sort of legal action.

Someone wanting to pursue legal action doesn't mean the courts have to hear it.

You need to establish grounds first....A prima facie case that Law X has been broken.

If you can't establish that, the courts will laugh at you and throw you out.

As I said - doesn’t stop someone trying.

Something to think about, in terms of uses for an indoor oval stadium for Hobart.

The mainland state capitals have their large oval stadiums that host AFL and cricket (such as Perth Stadium) which is a purpose the new Hobart Stadium serves.

But the mainland state capitals also have large capacity indoor arenas (such as Perth Arena), with capacity over 10,000 and is weather proof. Great for tennis, basketball, netball, concerts, stage productions, comedy shows etc. Tasmania doesn’t have this.

The mainland state capitals also have convention/exhibition centres (Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre), with large indoor floor spaces. For car shows, kids carnivals, comic cons etc.

The Hobart Stadium fills more than just a gap for AFL and cricket. It can serve a lot more purposes throughout the year, for which the mainland states spent multiple billions of dollars building multiple venues for (due to more events and therefore more demand).

It's too big for arena and too small as stadium. It's white elephant

It would be really bad at all those things. The seats are too far back for basketball, netball or tennis, and the surface will be grass, which would bad for conventions and shows.

You cover the grass for some events if needed, events companies have stuff for this. Have you never seen Marvels oval used for conventions, conferences, church services, Basketball, WWE or concerts?

Adelaide Oval, the MCG, Optus Stadium, Accor Stadium, Aami Park, Allianz and Suncorp all use the surface during concert events.
