We are 2 midfielders short. Pray that Clark comes on, worpel can find some form and we can turn Sdk and this years 1st and next years first into Marshall and Butters.

We need some hard working balanced midfielders.

All while Bews was sitting in the stands. Still our best lock down defender now he is gone

Agreed.

Without those 2 midfielders we have a soft underbelly in the middle.

Surely yesterday again proves that we need a key forward above all else. You just can’t “expect to rely” on Cameron and Danger at 33 and 36 years of age.

We literally have nothing in the reserves. Zero depth. Yesterday Blitz spent 30 mins trying to quell Harris Andrews.

The ruck is just not as important position. The Lions had Darcy Fort in there FFS!! Id rather look at a free Stephen May and play SDK and Blitz in there. On top of that ruck is a position we have young depth at. Albeit it hard to see ready for 2026.

For mine the sole priority is Curnow. We also need to look at what assets we could give up which sadly we don’t have a lot of. The name I keep looking at is Stengle. Extremely highly paid, still has plenty of value. Yes you would like to keep him but it’s about balancing the list.
We dont have the assets to trade for curnow period. There's no way to get the top 10 picks Carlton would want and short of trading sdk we don't have the players.

I'm with Warhorse ......midfielders are our biggest need.

I'm prepared to hold the faith with Neale.

We just can't extract the ball when the going gets hard, so we need a couple of guys to get it out to the likes of Smith and Holmes who can then bring the likes of Neale into the game.

If it means trading SDK so be it. He doesn't really move the needle for me.

I was open to the idea of trading SDK, as he's been a little hot-and-cold since he had his face caved in.

But I thought he stood up well and was back to near his best throughout the entire finals series.

Would be an interesting decision to trade him now when he seems like he's got his confidence and form back. Plus it leaves us pretty light on down back (undersized Henry + still developing O'Sullivan).

He was in the group standing on the field after the game...in a moon boot and on crutches...Id be stunned if he has anything like a "full preseason".
Definitely a delayed start for sure. So his chances of starting the season on time in any capacity is zero.

Osullivan is not ready had a great 1st year, I would be keeping SDK you need two tall backs, organic growth within the team is needed as our picks wouldnt even land Jy Simpkin

On one hand I'd love to see us top up a little bit and reload for another shot next year, but the Lions are so good, very deep and only getting better next year. Do we do a soft reset and see off a few of the old fellas with a mini-rebuild season. Stanley, Danger, Duncan, Cuthrie, Bews put out to pasture, maybe use Kolo, MOC & Stengle as trade bait. Rather than focus on Marshall bring in some picks to get Curnow and potentially target a younger cheaper ruck such as Reeves to hold the fort til Edwards or Conway are ready

We were one point down with a few minutes to go in the gf. We're not that far off. But we do have issues to resolve.

Development of our bigger body inside mids is something we just have not been able to do, and it sucks, it seems any midfielder above 185cm serves their draftee contract or rookie contracts doing nothing but hanging around the VFL and getting limited opportunities in the big leagues.

Stephens, Knevitt, Stevens, Constable amongst others, is it a lack of development, opportunity, or scouting, surely we can make one of them into a 200 game player.

Outside mids we do ok with, but for whatever reason we really struggle with big bodied mids who can win the ball in traffic, unless we recruit them in, and frankly we keep offloading our first rounders every year for trading.

Totally get it, I'm knee-jerking right now I know but just get the feeling Brisbane is going to be such a powerhouse I don't want to see us lose some younger players (Knevitt, Stevens etc) because we're still giving positions to 35 year olds during a year we may not stand a chance

I don't know how we beat Brisbane when you add Draper and Allan into that mix plus natural growth from their high draft pick kids and new draftees like Annable.

But you need to improve. Marshall a minimum requirement. Worpel at least isn't getting pushed off it with ease like some of the guys we're running through there.

They will lose players. Up to us and other clubs to make some offers and see what shakes free

If we don’t stand a chance it’s unlikely anyone does either. I think we were clearly the second best team this season. Even with an expected decline from Danger and Blicavs (I can’t put Cameron or Stewart in that category yet), there’s every reason we should expect more improvement from Holmes, Smith, Dempsey, SDK, Neale, Humphries, COS, Clark etc. Many of these players took big steps forward this year.

We look likely to bring in at least two players who walk into our best team, and will at the very least regain Kolo and potentially #4 too.

I don’t see Coll, Haw, Crows, Freo, Dogs etc having any more upside than that.

The concern is that Brisbane - and maybe the Suns from next year - just dominate and nobody can get near them.

Marshall and Worpel increase us in areas we need improving, don't watch the PF and think thats Worpel, he's been good to very good for the hawks for a few years and was excellent in the SF for them. He improves us, assuming we can use him correctly.
Marshall the same, we need a ruck who can go forward and kick a goal/stretch a defence, Stanley can't do it anymore, and Blicavs is fine as a ruck/back.
From there we need 1 more IMO. Either internal improvement or external inclusion. SOMEONE who can provide 20-25 damaging touches and hit the scoreboard. A Mannagh type maybe who can do it inside and outside and in big games.
The lions have half a dozen of them, honestly we have 2, maybe 3.
Stevens would be great if he could take a huge leap forward, Clark maybe could. Dont see anyone else internally that could take the leap.
Butters instantly fills that role though...

Agreed. We get pushed off it far to easy in the contest. I think opposition players find it far to easy to stand up in a Geelong tackle for the most part. Guys like Neale, Rayner, Mcluggages etc just walk through our mids. Maybe an unpopular take, but Gryan should never be seen in a centre bounce again.

Worpel been unhappy at the Hawks this year.
He knew he was on the outside and their other mids didn't help him block for him etc.
He's still young enough and experienced enough.

I guess we will have to pay up for Marshall.
Hes a very good around the ground go get .

If Hawks get Merrett and a full season out of Day they'll go pretty far.

Freo has a lot of organic growth to come, they're still a young side mostly.

Dogs can turn themselves into a major force with a couple of defenders

Crows and Collingwood miss the 8 next year though i feel
