Offering a first round pick out of desperation for Jordan Butts is not the stuff of hard headed list management.

Its the stuff of idiocy and bigfooty.

Given Busslinger is considered the weak link in our defensive chain. And putting aside their age and stages of physical development.

Lets compare the pair and how their 2025 seasons went shall we.

Ive seen some overrating of players during my time on this board but the thirst for Butts is beyond ridiculous.

I mean stats don't really mean a lot for key backs. Butts is also a pure stopper while Buss played as a third tall most of the time. Trust me I know Butts is no Harris Andrews but he fits a great age profile, games played mark and slots into our current line up. 25 is the perfect age to nab a key back who has genuine upside. The reality is in this league you have to pay up or as Bevo has said "pony up" to get talent to the club.

Interesting as well that Rhylee West called Michael Regan after the Budarick rumours first came out and said something along the line of "he gave me absolute fits last year when we played Gold Coast, get him in!"

It was a good listen. Impressive individual.

I mean stats don't really mean a lot for key backs. Butts is also a pure stopper while Buss played as a third tall most of the time. If stats don't matter for KPD then we can just pocket the 1st rounder demanded of Butts and go find a state league or dfa who fits the all important age profile.

But reality is that stats do matter and Butts' 2025 stats are worse than all of Busslinger, O'Donnell and Lobb. I won't bore you with how he fares against the games elite defenders. It wouldn't be fair, butt it makes for terrible reading.

Ponying up and using a 1st rounder on Butts just for then sake of it would be folly.

Packing it up with future picks or whatever shakes out of the trade period for an established KPD would.

The question that Ive asked countless times is. Who and how?

Excellent news. Id argue our small-mid defender stocks are worse than our key back stocks.

Very true, it is THIN back there with Duryea retiring. I'm always nervous to see who goes to a Kozi Pickett or Papley etc who tend to give us trouble, hope we land him, solid pick up at a spot of need.

If buderick and sellwood could have strong years and bring a harder edge to our backline, assuming we tighten up structurally too, would go a long way.

Another key point to highlight which i've argued back and forth with people on here about this year.

"The harsh reality of talls taken early in the draft is they take 4-5 years to develop, and that's with a clean run at it."

Buss is only 21 and hasn't completed a full pre-season yet! He has already shown quite a bit in my eyes having some very good games this year at VFL level, and being promoted above Jones and Gardner to play a solid chunk of AFL games this year and be able to hold his own. He is a big boy and once he can put on some more strength and add to his defensive craft, I still absolutely believe in him becoming a good, to very good KPD at AFL level. It's fine if people disagree, but I don't think you can argue that he isn't yet fully developed, and still has a chunk of potential inside him and a higher level he may hit.

Walker is a KPD was only moved forward in the final as we had Jones and lost Buku

We are also getting Will Darcy who is a defender

Does anyone have Walkers height and weight? He isn’t a KPD to my eye. Good prospect though.

191cm currently same as Wilkie but only 19 so will still grow

Its above my pay grade but my opinion is AFL might force him into a draft since he doesn't met the free agent requirements

I would like to see us have a crack with a late/rookie pick at a failed/average KP Forward and see if we can turn them into a serviceable full back.

If we pick up budarick and frost...I don't think that is a really bad outcome. Not fantastic but it's not bad. Sounds like the club really rate Buss as well. A part of me wants the club to be more bold....but it's not what or who we are..
