Should be no reason why the Sam Draper move is not lodged today, he is an unrestricted free agent.

Have to wait on Oscar Allen as he is a restricted free agent so technically the Eagles can match our offer if they want, IIRC they get 3 days to match.

Why are touted to lodge our FA paperwork so late this year? Is it as simple as the AFL wanting to draw out the process of movements or am I missing something?
I was confused as well. Maybe ensuring the Starcevich trade happens first?

Draper being lodged today apparently.

Allen not yet = a few days to ensure West Coast understand the situation, bend the knee and give us the priority pick for Starce.

Great work Dom14!

We only have to hold the defence until Answerth gets back. Also, look at the club champions votes from last night. Answerth and Payne were dominating the defensive votes. I'm going to stick to my guns by saying Answerth will be a better footballer than starce.
Big call, but given his phenomenal improvement over 2024 and exceptional finals performance he well could.

We didn't miss a beat when Starce went out earlier in the season and his votes for the first 1-10 rounds reflect that. He's a genuine gun and he's probably the most underrated player we have at our club.

How do you think an Answerth v Dangerfield match up would go? 🤔

Sam Draper facts I'd forgotten or didn't know:
  • no.1 draft pick 2016 ? ( not 2017 )
  • debuted in 2020
  • 27th birthday was 5 days ago - happy b'day Drapes
  • 78 games at Essendon

Get him fit and he's a relative 'baby' in terms of AFL football experience and wear and tear.

* seems to be some confusion on websites as to whether Draper's draft year was 2016 or 17.
Our Cam was no.1 in 2017 wasn't he ?

Big fan of Noah. He's a slightly different player to Starce in my view. Not as big or good in the air - so he couldn't take Dangerfield for example i don't think. While Noah's kicking has improved a lot it is still a bit panicked at times.

But Noah has exceptional speed and mobility so for the smaller types like Papley he is a perfect fit.

I see Starce as the perfect mid-sized defender, neatly sandwiched between being a tall and a small with attributes that both have. In that sense he is almost impossible to replace as like for like. The key will be making sure we have a blend of defence and attack in our back 7.

The biggest watch for me will be seeing, if fit, how Coleman re-integrates in to the side. At the end of 2024 i was thinking, Zorks did great, lets get Kiddy back in there. Right now there is no way you could take Zorko out of his current role.

He can definitely have his best footy ahead of him if we get him right

Worth noting he was the no.1 draft pick in the 2017 ROOKIE draft :)

I think we are in a better position this year than last year.
Top teams usually lose a few players.

We will get something reasonable for Ah-Chee and Starcevich.
If Dev or others find another club, we will get a token pick

Last year Jo Daniher playing near his best chose to retire.
As such we got nothing for him in the draft should he have moved instead of retiring.
That made it harder to get points for Levi, Marshall & Gallop
The only Lions player traded was Sharp for pick 49
Day the only established player that came to the Lions for nothing as that's all we had in draft capital.

There was media about our interest in Budarick who has ruled us out.
But that indicates we have a plan and enough picks to possibly get another player

On the salary cap, you’d think we will be transition some of our depth into the senior squad over the next 2 years via retirements or at worst guys getting new deals on less money in the final few years of their careers.

Big O, Zorko, Lester, Fort, Gardiner (maybe), Neale might move back to WA, McCarthy

Then we can refresh the depth and hopefully use the money from retirements and reduced deals on new deals for the younger up and comers.

My expectation is that we may lose Lohmann, Bailey and Morris at some stage to Melbourne clubs or Adelaide in the case of Bailey.

My worry is guys like Ashcroft, Motty and Fletcher receiving crazy offers from Tas that we just can’t match.

There is talk of Daicos being offered a $3m signing bonus plus $2m per year on an 8 year deal plus all these other arrangements. If he doesn’t take that then id expect Will might be offered a similar arrangement. Or even if he does take take it Will might still be offered a crazy deal.

Agree on the older blokes. I hope Neale does end up going back to WA at the end of next year. Best losing him than a Bailey, Morris or Ashcroft etc.

Cant see an Ashcroft or Fletcher taking a big deal from Tassie. Maybe Morris or Rayner gets one.

Pruning and rejuvenation of the list is the only way we stay somewhere near the top of the tree. Sure it sucks when it's your favourite player but no one is irreplaceable. We of all teams should know that given how we've managed to get a second flag with a pretty banged up list.

Starc is a big loss... but also a big risk. Loved him from the minute he took the field but given he has most likely a short time left in the game I don't blame him one bit for taking the best offer he could.

Joe leaving was the end of us last year. Now we have exposed Morris and Gallop to the big time and unearthed some real talent. That's what list renewal does. Won't always work but good clubs find a way.

The cap and success means chances are we will lose a quality player or two every year from here on out... it's sadly inevitable. That's how the system is designed to work. Honestly, it's a feather in our cap.

Acceptance doesn't equate to happiness. It's just reality. I'm proud we are a club that deals with that with dignity and respect.
Well said...to be honest, I am more concerned about the incremental loss of our support around Fages - Davis, Swann and now Dew.

Starce is only 4cm taller than Answerth - which is basically nothing. And I believe he played on Dangerfield in round 3?
Starc definitely had the ability to play up in size and weight class but would say the big difference was in his aerial ability as well as ground level ability. Do feel we are going to need someone to dedicate themselves to a lockdown role though as a backup to Answerth. Whether thats more on the real smalls or the mediums.

Interesting to see if we keep Fletcher, Wilmot and Coleman (if he returns) as more attacking players or get one of them to balance the attacking ability with the shutdown

I’m growing more and more keen on the idea of Hipwood training with the backline when he returns.

I don’t see how we fit him into the forward line, and wasn’t he a defender as a junior?

I agree. We need a bigger mid size backman who doesn’t want to end up in the midfield. That’s the key. Very hard to come by. Doedee could change his mindset to become a lockdown maybe. Good size. Tunstill is a bigger body but would have to realize he’s never going to break into our midfield. It will take something like this to plug that hole.

Thoughts on Jarrod Berry as a Starcevich replacement🤔

At least a plan B if Doedee can’t get on the park.

Edit: I think we forget Dizzy can play on talls and smalls. Payne coming back.
I do like the idea of Berry as a lock down back to replace Starcevich.
A few years a go he did a number on Oliver from Melbourne to prove the point.
I think he could handle smalls and hybrid forwards.
Quite a few options in the team to fill a wing position.

Silvagni to St Kilda and Compensation pick 19 to Carlton.
In comparison I would argue Starcevich's footy CV and value to WCE is equal to, if no better than Silvagni' is to St Kilda.
Both have equal concerns for each club. Starcevich's concussions Vs. Silvagni's dodgy knees.
Based on that I think Starcevich is worth WCE's pick 15 rather than their end of first round Compensation pick that they are already whinging about.

I think Fagan has shown he's happy to role with whatever transition occurs around him - it's the nature of the industry.
Fagan has been long enough in the system to know and understand the nature of the industry. it is very transient and attritional. Look what's happening currently with some teams in Vic. Total revamps in their footy departments.

We have been fortunate to have some limited stability. As we have become more successful and a destination for players we are a destination for good quality soft cap personnel.

We have also promoted internally and toped up from external sources.
I think we will be OK, unless we do a total duck-up, but that is hard to see under the current administration.
