I think Sharp is more important with how he potentially unlocks Harley. If we were savvy, we could still get Sharp with these Patterson and Duursma, though a fair bit would need to fall our way.
Having more weapons in the middle also unlocks Harley. More than 1 way to make it happen.

I think people forget just how good Harley is in congestion, he can be a 1st touch player who has the ability to get the ball out to players who are arguably just as damaging if not more damaging than him, like Duursma or Patterson have the ability to be.

Add in DevRob/Allan/Hall/whoever as a mainly defensive mid role player and what exactly are we lacking by drafting Patterson over Sharp?

Remember we have Gross, Hall, Evans, Banfield x2, etc who are all mids and could easily be in the mix too.

Can’t believe I’m allowing myself to think there’s even a 0.1% chance that Gold Coast don’t match a Patterson bid…

He’s one of the most exciting prospects I can remember, incredible raw talent.
I can see a world where it happens, if they go all in a premiership for 2026.

I dont think itd be a bad move for them either, they're in the window and have an over abundance of talent anyway

Interesting comments from Patterson.

We can use this as leverage. Either Gold Coast trade pick 7 with us or we roll the dice and see how badly they want him.

Bid on him with Pick 1, force Gold Coast to pay maximum value for him at 2700 points. They will take Uwland no matter what but will they pay that amount for Patterson?

Let's find out.

It is, almost like he has been told if we get some targets like Petracca we might not have the pick for you, start having a chat with other clubs.

I dont want McCarthy leaving, so I would have him on the main list on a pretty good salary.

There is zero difference for players being on the main list vs rookie list in terms of how much they are paid are how long they can be contracted for

The rookie list now is nothing more than a list management tool that is so far removed from it’s original intent that the AFL might as well just scrap it

Because McCarthy was picked up in the MSD he can remain on the rookie list until 2028

That's what i'm thinking. So if we are really keen on him then we need to force them to pay as much as possible.

We can still trade Pick 2 if Bombers are desperate for Duursma however they need to pony up 5 & 6 with something else going back their way. I'd wait for draft night though. Let them sweat.

With 1 & 2 we really need to talk to every club that's interested and then let them come to us. The longer we wait the more time they have to do something silly.

Ok cheers. I assumed rookie list also meant minimum wage in the majority of cases, besides the veterans that get put on it.
Hopefully we are paying him well, or plan to soon.

Probably a dumb question

But if there's zero difference in pay and rookie list players can play whenever then what exactly is it used for?

That’s about the end of the compo that impacts us right? (Pick 2 for Allen aside).

We may hand it over for Starc anyway, but I don't understand why our end of first round PP is the true end of the first round compared to the FA end of first round picks.

As for how that relates to Patterson, he looks capable on the inside but he's an absolute jet on the outside. There's no way we should be looking at him as being the guy who gets the ball out to Harley. I'd go as far as to say I'd take Sharp and Patterson over Sharp and Duursma or Duursma and Patterson.

Goes back to what I thought about Jordan Croft at the time. He joins a team where he is stuck behind 3 blokes because he was too scared to leave mummys basement . He is now literally stuck at best being the 3rd choice tall forward who kicks 30 goals a season for the next 5+ years instead of going to Sydney Swans when in 2025 he would have been first choice FF and a chance to legit be the go to guy for the rest of his career going forward

Patterson has this same issue. Does he try win a spot from either 2 coaches favorites in Noble/Rioli... or two superstars like Petracca/Humphreys.... a team thats brimming to the top with salary cap pressure just in time for his first contract negotiation to have Rowell/Anderson/King/Humphreys/Uwland/Andrew/Petracca taking those 1 mill+ wages while he misses out, or does he say No to Gold Coast and join us. A team which gives him a game instantly and a team upon which in 3 years time for his first contract will 100% certain have a 1 million dollar contract available to hand him

Its a easy choice from a professional standpoint, but the nepo baby syndrome of it all probably leads him into making the dumb decision

This is how we should roll.
I have no doubt we are talking to all draftees as this just comes out of the blue.

The same with the Duursma leak/chat yesterday that he would be happy to go to WC.
Draftees all having their testing and interviews will throw up some interesting outcomes.

I believe this draft is the best possible time to take as much top end talent as possible.
We are probably over 50% through a rebuild with all the young talent on our list and we have the assets by selling Barrass/OA/Ryan/Chesser so go hard and address the talent where it lacks.

Midfield x 3 minimum, a KPD prospect and best available talent with what ever else we can get.
The top end is not big in number but their are some very good players in the top 10.

Push up and get 3 top 10 players or 4 if we are optimistic on their potential.
Duursma/Sharp/Cumming/Schubert are the candidates that excite the most for our list needs.

If Patterson is a real chance, sell Duursma and get Patterson.
Both outside transition players but Patterson is more a balanced mid in time, Gulden type but taller.

100% this and hope there is some legs to it.

If Patterson's a real chance then there's no need to sell Duursma.

Having both would be incredible and suit Mimi's gameplay to a T.

1st touch = the guy who gets the ball.

Harley can do any role in the middle imo, and he can be the best or close to the best in the game inside or playing more balanced.
Harley might be better off as a 2nd touch player but Patterson and Duursma are probably as good or better as that 2nd touch player instead.

Might not be optimal for Harley but for the overall midfield composition it might be best.
Can find a plain old extractor with later picks or by other means if required, thats where Hall types come in.
Not everybody in our midfield is going to be an out and out star, but the ones we NEED to be stars are the ones using the ball, like Patterson or Duursma would.

For me Duursma is the lock, and Patterson over Sharp as his skill set is more unique and fits our list build and minis gameplan even better imo.

Vanilla Greg Clark as he looks, I just don't see how it would be possible for the club to ignore the best contested ball winner in this draft.

Sharps numbers are indisputable, his individual honour history is longer than my Mabior Chol.

When it's a clear area our AFL side is flogged in most weeks, surely we don't get seduced with making some other boneheaded idea and trying to be clever.

Duursma, sure, best talent, lots of upside, take the punt, absolutely, but pick 2 should be needs based. Especially when it's staring us in the face.

Can't rely on the Dev acquisition to be a long term elite extractor and sidekick for Harley when he's more than likely just in as depth and shoring up our WAFL team.

So when 3 teams get end of first round comp, how do they work out the order? Seems we got the raw end of that. Yes I know ours is a handout.

And why does ESS get put ahead of Carlton for eg. Secret herbs and spices? Wages etc?

20. Essendon (Draper)
21. Carlton (Silvagni)
22. WCE (AFL assistance)
Our handout is last. Essendon finished lower than Carlton so theirs is first
