As I've said previously, I don't lose too much sleep over what stuff eventuates and what doesn't. That's not really the reason I post. I just share what I'm told (and there's obviously some stuff I can't). Whether it turns out to be correct or not is not really the point as I see it.

Seems a bit weird that some posters have this expectation of posters that you only post something if it's signed sealed and delivered. Kind of counter intuitive to the whole premise of a draft / trading / rumour forum I would have thought

I think that's all reasonable to suggest, although using language like "you don't have the assets in picks, nor will you trade any players" is a bit of a stretch.

We have picks / including future picks and it really just comes down to where and how we use them. Marshall is clearly the priority as stated by Mackie himself. Curnow, also clearly a player the Cats rate highly, and they appreciate the challenge in getting that deal done. But don't automatically assume Geelong don't have picks / nor are they prepared to trade players.

When interviewed yesterday, Mackie stated that no players had stepped forward as yet and asked to be traded. Don't misinterpret that as the club not sitting down with a contracted player (if required) and having a discussion about a potential trade. For Curnow to get to Geelong you'd imagine that a player will be involved. We've got a 10 day window and lot's can happen in that period - and most likely will.

Everything points to the Marshall deal being done. Curnow will be tougher but Geelong are clearly a motivated buyer. If there was no interest then the club would have shut it down straight away.

It definitely seems like there is interest from both parties based on the bits that we get from the media, yourself and other ITK posters. I think we can all appreciate that given we dont have two top 10 picks then we would have to get creative to pull off such a deal and that could only include a player of quality (I would have thought) and some future picks.
The player would have to be somebody we dont want to lose but that is the nature of such trades (think Brent Moloney in 2004).
Given its been mooted that they are looking for a small forward you would assume it would have to be Mannagh or Stengle as Close wouldn't be considered enough "quality" for such a deal and I would imagine Dempsey and Miers would be considered "untouchable" (for this trade at least).
We would also have to give up a future first and possible 2nd - which would seem to rule out any chances of getting Butters (at this stage)
Keep Posting Jumping Jack its good to get a "feel" for the thinking and positioning - we all know that things can change on an hourly basis - such is the nature of this trade period - doesn't mean the intel is wrong or made up - just means deals cant get done or better deals come along

Flanders - pick 7 is understandable, but still no bargain = overs.
TDK - no pick required but $$$ makes him = overs.
NAS - imagine having to pay your players more than anyone in AFL history to keep them = clear jet, but overs.
Aleer - probs will get him for a nothing pick but $$$ will = overs.
SOS - no pick required but length of contract and $$$ still is no bargain = overs.
Wilkie - had to add extra $$$ onto his contract (called it ages ago, easy extra money for him) = overs.
Windhager - solid young player but probably on nearly as much as Holmes = overs.
Ryan - aging, declining but ok small forward who is contracted... prob will also pay overs picks or $$$ wise to snag him.

No shot in the world this inefficient, overpaying strategy doesn't backfire down the track.

I know you have St Kilda contacts, so its not surprising you would be defending them.

But this is an extremely rose-coloured view of what they've done. IMO there's a 95% chance the AFL world looks back on this trade/free agency period in a few years as the point at which the Saints blew up any chance they had of contending in the foreseeable future.

What would be interesting would be to see stats for the differential between centre ball-ups when the ball is bounced v thrown up.

You'd hate to make lasting decisions about rucks if the numbers change completely if the ball isn't bounced. Only the results from recalled bounces matter now.

I agree that it could happen as you describe. Aleer/SOS are they only items I see as potentially poor trades

It is a lot for one trade period and they are not done yet.

You can kinda do that in regards to clearances being differentiated between centre and stoppage, but they don't so much do that specifically for hit out stats - the following is from the AFL Stats section of their website in regards to Marshall:

While we've got an obvious target this year in Marshall, it's looking likely to be another quiet trade period for us after a quiet trade period last year - so any little bit of excitement is kinda fun at the moment

Gee, that's fascinating. If I interpret them correctly, we're looking at a guy whom the elimination of the bounce is possibly going to favour significantly. Am I reading it right?

The problem of course is it's not a complete match. Centre 'ball-ups' have that artificial setup.
