2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

The meek may well inherit the earth (in 6 foot plots) but they will never win AFL premierships. So we decided we no longer wanted Aleer, ok, meh, end of story.

Now if we had waited until the last day and then pulled the plug when it was too late for him to consider other choices and he did not have an offer from GWS then some criticism would be warranted. Did not happen.

Revel in it guys, we for once are the story, its been a long time since we were relevant. Sure the smooth brain ghouls like Damo are going their default "Saints shit" garbage, as if they were ever going to say anything else.

The entire AFL can dislike us, much better than their pity. When we are winning grand finals I will roast marshmallows in the fire of their hate.

Now that Marshall is staying and any SDK chance is out the window, why don't we have Aleer nominate for the preseason draft and we take him from there? Assuming we have the cap space, feels like the best option in terms of reputation with managers, sticking to playing hard ball with trades and we'd get Aleer for nothing
They've come to the realisation after trading in Jsos, that they dont actually have a need for Aleer, l reckon

Geelong cheats by paying players outside the salary cap, receives a small fine.

AFL media- yep that's fair enough, moving on.

Saints pull out of a trade for an uncontacted player because his original club is asking to much in trade value.

AFL media- disgusting, how could they do that! Burn the club down! Who do they think they are! Where is the professionalism!

🤣🤣🤣 Amazing isn't it.

Damo thinks we overpaid for flanders, doesn't rate our ins, but also reckons it's a failure if we don't make week 2 of finals next year. Wonder how those two opinions coexist
I find his logic hilarious.

Surely every club is trying to get better every year?

Would have thought unless you’ve committed to a full rebuild, every club should be trying to make and win a final every year at a minimum. And when they don’t why is their season any less of a failure than ours?

He’s effective saying because they’re not trying as hard to get better? They’re mediocrity cannot be considered a failure?

Daresay the age of our list next year at worst will be mid-tier in terms of age profile. We will not be falling off a cliff in terms of age after next year.

Who knows the genuine truth, hopefully it comes out soon. But the reporting is that we've completely pulled out our interest and will not try to trade for him. That isn't the same as our offer not being met no matter how you spin it, otherwise we'd keep the offer of a future third/fourth on the table for the rest of the period and see if GWS eventually cave and accept it, as well as trying to walk Aleer to the draft as had been previously reported. Instead, we've completely slammed the door shut (according to reports) after saying days ago we were confident it'd get done.

Many here just seem to be adopting a **** you attitude towards the entire rest of the AFL and the media, which is fine, but let's not pretend this is common practice. If we still wanted Aleer, we'd still be trying to honour his nomination and our contract offer it's as simple as that.
Yeah, in this instance he has not been strung along and told right at the end that no deal is possible. Instead he has been told a week out and is putting his standing contract from GWS (assuming they don’t pull it) on hold whilst he seeks other suitors. So assuming it is not standard practice, if you must, he has actually been treated better than those who would otherwise pretend to the death in order to, presumably, save face. Some people are determined to see negatives no matter what.

Hang on a minute here.
Roma is contracted. WE are not walking away from any deal.
If they want him, they are obligated to satisfy us.

By offering 3 firsts for Curnow - THEY are walking away from the deal after courting Roma and getting him to select them.

Something the media morons out there have conveniently overlooked in their haste to criticise Saints and laud everything Cats.

And regarding the most difficult club to deal with, I’d say the GCS and WCE don’t agree.

With AFL's insistence on the introduction of future trading, free agency and other mechanisms taken from US sport, its obvious that the AFL world is too immature and not ready for a club to actually act in the way US sports franchises act.
Have been thinking the same thing all morning. I think we are going to look bad this year because we're the first to do it but situations like Aleer will become more common going forward, especially when they finally reform FA and scrap compo picks.

This isn't normal work. Its the AFL.

Your new employer doesn't have to satisfy your current employer with a trade to acquire your services.
This is more like being a contractor than “normal work”. We don’t have to satisfy GWS if Aleek goes to the PSD. But at the moment he is controlled by GWS. In that circumstance and a release is sought, then it certainly would be necessary to satisfy the other party to induce them to agree to end a contract, even if that would end naturally another way imminently.

I still think Saints will get Leek but you just watch, we’ve set the tone for future trade knocked backs.
List managers will be secretly loving it.

God aleer going to north would be best case scenario for us 😂😂

You just know they'll pay overs and give that second rounder, and even they get it done for a third rounder, that just makes us look good because GWS refused that from us

Goes to the worst defensive team in the league, no help from Wilkie there for him, and will struggle against best forward

Goes to a team that isn't a competitor for finals, so no danger of us looking bad

I'm loving this new era of St.Kilda

I really fail to see how this happens?

We already have to pay overs for players as it is, player managers only care about getting the best deal for their player, we've literally been used a staking horse for years as it is

List managers already play hardball with us, we werent some sort of geelong or hawks where people are desperate to get to

RIght now neither him nor his management would urinate on us if we caught fire. This wont happen take it to the bank

St Kilda are the new darlings of the press. Just look at these gems about our latest act of treachery.

1) 'leaving Aleer in limbo'
2) 'recruits to second-guess the Saints’ reliability in future'
3) 'unexpected pivots'
4) 'Saints quietly pulled out'
5) 'Trust is currency in trade dealings.'
6) 'high-profile backflip'
7) 'Without him, St Kilda will..potentially sacrifice defensive balance.'
8) 'raises questions about cap management'
