2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

If we could get the Marshall deal done for at worst Cats FRDP then offer Port cats FRDP, our FFRDP and our FFFRDP. Thats 3 frdp for Butters....is almost there

Anyone else find it interesting that…

Battle (left)
Marshall (wanting to leave)
Steele (has been asked to leave)
Wilson (yet to re-sign and rumours he may want out)

Along with Howard (previously shopped)

Are all managed by the same management group.

Of which the only client who seems happy with us is Wood and we haven’t been linked to a single Hemisphere client in return.

🤔
Where's the rumours about him?

My best guess is we needed to get all our deals done early to be able to be involved in the trickier targets we wanted either CMac or maybe SDK. They certainly were in a rush to get things done no real haggling all deals done by Thursday except Aleer.

GWS were looking to go into a protracted strung out negotiation and we decided we needed to draw a line come Thursday so we could go to Hawthorn or Geelong with all our Assets known and propose how we could integrate in their deals for Merrett and or Curnow. We could not afford to have the unknown of the Aleer trade hanging over the weekend and we prioritised the possibility of landing CMac (or SDK) over the certainty of landing Aleer.

Our Assets are our Future 1st Marshall and Steele mainly with random later picks if needed to even things up like the 2027 3rd and 4th round picks we added that seem pretty random in isolation but might help in a multi club deal to even things out.

I suspect it is more likely it is CMac and the Merrett deal we are focussed on because it sounds like we have already done the pre work with him so he would be happy to move to us and probably not so much the Dons.

Suspect the Marshall deal will get reignited if the Cats drop out of the Curnow chase, because right now they look to be a fair way behind Sydney so maybe that changes which future 1st we add to a Merrett deal

Steele is probably just a sweetener if he can be convinced to move.

All the above is optimistic speculation and alternately perhaps we just ran out of money or list spots and we are done for this year

I would do that instantly. Surely port would rather cash in now than get a single compensation pick next year.

Butters has been my fave non saints player since 2020. Would be a needle mover for sure.

Also imagine young gun cracking the sads + dogs even saltier. Everyones a winner

Would be really strange to recruit Soldo a year after he failed a medical with us.
He didn’t necessarily fail the medical. We weren’t comfortable on it with the deal offered.

We know the player and have his medical. If a deal for Marshall happens. It makes sense if it’s cheap

Owens getting squeezed out is a wild call.

Top 10 in the B&F despite missing some games with injury

Won the team trademark award

Has a ridiculous win/loss percentage for one on ones.

Would be one of the first picked I reckon
Nail on the head. Absolutely one of the first picked. I don't get supporters who fail to see it. Comes up a lot, this sort of junk. Weird.

Jeez, didn't expect to see that statement from the manager. The fact that he's saying Aleer is livid at the club suggests the move really is dead.

I do not like this at all.

Makes me think SDK is happening and that this wasn't expected, but I dont think we should lead players this far and then blue ball them. Aleer has put his neck on the line, possibly severed relationships at GWS and has been given 5 days to make a life changing decision.

This isn't tough, this isn't ruthless, this isn't shrewd. This is a dog act. Hopefully we have a good reason for being a dog, I'm not sure if SDK is a good enough player to justify this.

Has taken a bit of gloss off of what should be a pretty good couple of days.

Im honestly hoping we're just playing GWS and Aleer and his manager are in on the act, but I'm doubtful.
I agree 100%. Aleer was surplus to needs and the costs were too high - but I really don’t like leading a player on this far into trade period. Saints should have cut the cord the day they knew they were getting silvangi.

Other players may take note of what the Saints have done and may think twice about nominating them.

He’s still an RFA next year. They’ll match and force a trade. If anything they can start a bidding war next year.

Unless someone goes ****ing ham for a deal this year they won’t let him go.

If Marshall goes we have TDK, Dodson and Keeler. If all three go down Soldo won’t help much imo. Better off taking those three and getting a mid season player from the state league if it all goes to shit.
