That deal is nuts, and Sydney probably still improve/Carlton fall off further despite it.

They only have so many years of Heeney/Warner left.
Nah, this improves Carlton. Their forward line was desperate for quality medium/smalls and Mackay/Curnow seem to function best solo. Florent basically takes the role of Hollands. Two first round picks on top of that? Far out.

Sounds like they are going to get access to Dougie Cochrane. Be interesting to see if he holds his status in the next 12 months. Likewise Rodan, Salopek and Pilot. If they all do then they will be okay.

We have seen it before though 12 months is a long time.
How possibly does Cochrane qualify?

The support offered First Nations footballers is to help address some of the challenges they might face across their upbringing

A year and a half ago, Cochrane didn't even believe he was indigenous. He hasn't had the same challenges others have faced, and shouldn't be able to leap on the benefits last minute.

If I’m Carlton, I’m taking this and running.

Florent and Hayward are handy enough players, but also sounds like maybe Sydney are having a bit of buyers remorse on how much/how long the deals are on both and see this as an opportunity to get rid of some salary off the books they don't want anymore.

I think the changes to the Draft Point Index has had unintended consequences to be able to trade. Good that it is trying to make fair value for F/S, NGA & Northern Academy. Moving back the values from Pick 73 having a points value to Pick 54. So the compression has made our 3rd Round Picks nearly worthless and hard to trade or improve a teams Draft hand.

This is the intended consequence, though. And it was known before we traded our F2 and brought in late future picks last year.

You know it, I know it, in fact everyone including the Powa know it....but it's the AFL.

If I was West Coast Shuestar13 then I would be on the phone to McDonalds manager to see if we could work out a deal to get him back to Perth. Getting Curnow is clear evidence of where Sydney see him in the medium term so if you could get him back especially with a change of scene and familiarity, it might be a good long term get for them in a real position of need.

We need Warner more…
Don’t have the list spots right now, our tall forward stocks are looking reasonable. Definitely one to watch on next year, I know this year for him (McDonald) was a write off due to injury. Will see how he comes back next year.

I assume that’s just Bucks getting back into the coaching game for a year or two before Tassie.
Smart move by him. Back into coaching, a nice new board role at Cotton On and he's set for the next move in a year or two.

Makes a mockery of the program.

The Cochrane family is a well known football family at SANFL/AFL level so Dougie has a pathway to AFL football.

Just not directly to Port.

I think our lack of picks is hurting in trying to go after these types though, especially as we had to use a couple for Peatling and ANB last year. I think we’ve had interest in Davies before, so surprised that hasn’t popped back up.
You’re probably right, It does show the reality of trading though. Someone just posted their list of net gains for various clubs, but didn’t include what they lost in doing so. The reality is that even later picks like we gave up for Peatling and ANB will still have an effect in the following years. It’s a game of 3D chess, and imagine giving up 2 1sts and 2 best 22 players like Sydney are proposing.

It’s not just trade collateral either. Taking on Petracca this year might well have made us a genuine flag chance, however his reported peak salary of $1.7m and giving up 2 1sts would have almost certainly ruled us out of getting NWM or Zac Bailey in the next 2 years. It also would have ruled us out of getting a potential gun SA kid this year like Cumming, Phillipou or Pickett. It also potentially costs you a Dan Curtin in the next few years because you can’t match a cashed up WC.

If we can come out of this week adding Ah Chee and keeping our ‘25 picks and cap space intact, then it has to be seen as a good result.

Carlton board not happy with Sydney's offer lol
They would have to be the most arrogant supporters in the league. Nobody huffs their own farts harder than Carlton supporters. It wouldn't be so annoying if it were Brisbane or some other good side but they've sucked arse for so long. I don't know why they're like this.

Sydney want pick 22 back, so effectively more like 1 first round pick and two players for Curnow
I dont necessarily think you can assume next years 1st will be at all even with 22 though. Sydney got brutally exposed with depth issues with a injury list that was bad, but not Essendon level by a long way.

And this trade package takes another big bite out of that depth. That Sydney F1 could be late, or just as easiliy be single digits.

Carlton would be buying a 1st round lottery ticket IMO.
