Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

He did the exact same thing with OAllen and wasn't exactly shy about spending time with Reid at Barrass' wedding.

If you think this isn't deliberate, you haven't been paying attention.

Power to him for trying but it's yet to work.

Quite the opposite actually.

Pretty sure it worked for Barrass mate.

Merrett will get done to FYI.

It is deliberate. Coaches meet with quality players they want to bring into a club.

The hysteria around it, well that's on the people doing the hysteria. It's not Mitchell architecting a reaction for his own benefit.
Coaches don't generally leak it during season and cause public drama between players and club.

Look at the way Brisbane went about meeting Allen vs Hawks, for instance.

Who landed their player in the end?

Why? They've said from day dot that they're not trading him and that's been the end of that from their position.

Maybe they're telling the truth?
It certainly seems that way. Theres been no wavering, no negotiating, just steadfast consistency that he won't be traded.

Personally, I think it's a terrible decision if so. They clearly need to rebuild, Tassie is about to own the draft and Merrett is the only veteran that has any significant trade worth. Every year they sell a vision that they just need a few tweaks and they can be back contending. Every year the players believe, they start ok and then turn to crap, finishing in the lower mid table. New people come in, want to sell the vision again and believe they will be the ones to turn it around (without doing the overhaul/rebuild that's needed) and history repeats.

Would be so frustrating as a supporter.

I think it's a very long bow to draw to conflate that Mitchell himself was directly involved in any of this...especially as he was on the eve of leading his side into a cut throat preliminary final against an arch rival.

head. sand

Why? Have you seen their draft hand this year? They don't need any more picks, they need mature players.

Hawthorn don't want to give up players and only want to give up picks, thus the impasse.

Blame Petroro / Mitchell / Hawthorn for leaking the meeting, Essendon had no reason or benefit to leak said meeting.

The nuclear option clearly been brought on to blow the joint up.
Once again you're back to wanting to pretend the meetings don't happen.

These meetings happen all the time and people need to grow up. The fact that a 'leaked' meeting gets any reaction is an embarrassment to the media that covers it and the people that react to the stories.

Everyone wants to pretend that trade discussions begin at the start of the trade period.

Everyone is happy for Oscar Allen to go to Brisbane, but lose their minds when Hawthorn tries to get him to come across. Mitchell isn't the cause of this hypocrisy. But they want to Mitchell for their own ridiculous overreaction to it all.

No person is bigger than the.... if you take the emotion out of the situation you negotiate more come 6pm tomorrow night and do this deal 100 times out of 100

Mitch is leaving a trail of destruction and a list of trade targets not ending up at Hawthorn.
pretty sure there was an article during the year about player agents not meeting clubs, Hawthorn is probably going down this path with the way they have conducted themselves in this trade period/year.

Can you name 3 players in any clubs' best 22 who you think would want to go to Essendon?

Its a demand which simply no club could meet. Because no good players want to go there, unless they get given a Silvagni type offer from their dad.

Im sure even getting HH to agree to a trade to Essendon took a lot of effort, and would be because no other clubs offered any interest in him.

Barrass shopped himself around for the third year in a row and the club were happy to facilitate his move because they already knew he was looking for a bigger deal.

Conveniently leaving out your club was also keen for Oscar to leave for FA compo but here lol

You've gone a day early here mate. Merrett will be a hawk. I'll check back in with our strike rate under Sam 7.35pm tomorrow.

Sigh

Another person saying that they're ok with Brisbane taking meetings, but not Hawthorn. And trying to justifying it beacuse the media reports on one and not the other.

It's just childish

You realise the media reported the meeting between Allen and Fagan as well right?
yep, the media didn't care about an out of contract, injured, interstate (co) 'captain'.

A contracted, multiple AA, club champion of a big 6 Melbourne club whom every one seems to hate was always going to be jumped on.

the only negative was how low Morris and Petroro tried to stoop to strong arm Essendon into dealing

There seems to be this narrative that Hawthorn's offer was the best offer anybody has offered to a 30 year old. I don't know whether this is true, but even if it is, it's such a flawed selective narrative.

  • Merrett has openly said he wants to play until he is 36.
  • He is more of an outside mid and doesn't get as banged up.
  • He is never injured and extremely durable.
  • He has just won his 6th best and fairest showing no signs of slowing down.
  • he is the captain
  • he is contracted.

Make no mistake, if Merrett ends up at Hawthorn tomorrow, he will play 100 games there without shadow of a doubt.

Their offer was just idiotic. The phrase "two-first round picks" has been thrown around a little too liberally also. Pick 1 is a first round pick this year, as will be pick 22. Hawthorn need to find two mid-range first round picks, and a best 22 player (not an A-Grader, but someone 11th to 23rd). The reason the player is important is because there is an inherant risk with any draft pick that is not the same as the known quantity of a player. That unknown risk of getting draft picks needs to be compensated with a known quantity.
