I still think there's a very good chance that Essendon were being truthful all along and have no intention to trade.

I don't think it's the right call for them (and I know most Essendon supporters prefer they did trade given what they are able to get for him) but it's absolutely their right, given he is contracted.

Not loving the narrative (from a select very few) that the deal didn't get done because Hawthorn didn't offer anything of value. Essendon have said all along they won't trade him. Essendon have refused to participate in any discussion or negotiations in relation to the trade. Hawthorn have put a forward a very good offer, that exceeds what the vast majority of Essendon supporters were asking for. Essendon has not once suggested a price they are looking for or would be willing to trade him for.

It is not on Hawthorn if this doesn't get done.

No best 23 players want to move from Hawthorn to Essendon. It's the reality of the situation, and if your honest with yourself you'd understand why.

That 2027 F1st with tassy coming in is about the same as the pick 31 we offered yesterday. It's cents to the dollar stuff and apparently our last offer was "so far off the mark it didn't deserve a reply".

Essendon need to hold him to make a statement IMO.
They have been a laughing stock for 25 years & now their captain wants out while they are trying to sell the image of a rebuild.
They need to hold him to seem united. They have gone too far with holding onto him to change their mind.

Move on, Essendon, you're clinging on like a toxic half of a couple that can't see the break-up needs to happen. Just like Melbourne did last year with Petracca and Oliver...only to realise, yeah, probably should have traded them both the year before. Now they will be paying more of both their salaries.

Holding a bloke who doesn't want to be there because the club has been crap for two decades, isn't going to galvanise sh*t, other than a stubborn attitude that will keep the club at the bottom. On top of that, Merret is a bloke who wanted to cut list sizes so presumably (he) would earn more money. Correct. He's hardly had a niggle, is the ultimate professional managing his health and fitness, and not playing many finals means he's less banged up and has been able to plan his preseasons better. It also means he has a greater hunger to go for longer.
