AFL Player 7: Indefatigable Zach Merrett

31 years old, worse draft picks will be available (closer to Tassie drafts), he's only going to pick a contender.

I can't see how we'll get anywhere near this type an offer in 12 months time.

Big risk for the Hawks to wait it out; Dunkley chose another club, Daniher chose another club. They both won Premierships.

Another 12 months and there's no guarantee Geelong doesn't spend the entire year working on Merrett, or that Merrett holds a grudge that it's all played out so publicly. And given it's Tom Morris driving the whole thing, I doubt it's EFC that's made it so public.

Tell Petroro that if Hawthorn can get a pick 1-4 then we might listen. So better off talking to WC and Richmond and offering them the deal they are offering us.

Explain? Keep a guy who doesn't want to be here, have another 12 months of a media circus? It seems crazy to me.
It’s happened before and it will happen again. Plenty of players in the past have not been able to get traded to the club they wanted.

Who cares if it’s a media circus. Least of our concerns.

I think it's clear we're at least listening to offers, which says to me Merrett being traded is very much a live option. So we are dealing, in some form.
For sure. Anyone who takes the clubs public stance of “not for sale” as gospel has rocks in their head. The willingness to trade has always been there imo, it’s pretty dumb to hold onto a player who desperately wants out and I’m sure the club understands this.

But there’s no obligation to accept a deal, Hawthorne can’t threaten to walk him to the PSD, the worst they can do is threaten to repeat the process next season (which isn’t totally insignificant) which puts us in a position of strength where we can simply veto offers and tell them to try again.

So you think we should have accepted yesterday's deal, and then go try and pry out one of their players next year?

I think we should do everything possible to rebuild, I think it's silly keeping players who don't want to be here, Zach is begging to leave, it's not a great place to be.

You and others seem hellbent on beating Hawthorn in this trade, we are in a competition with 16 other teams.

Zach is desperate to leave, I think we'll end up folding (I don't consider it a fold) and accept something.
He's such a cry baby Judas.

You overestimate how seriously I take trade period 🤣

I want him to go for the right price sometime in the next couple of hours. The right price isn't "fair"

Correct - we are in a competition and it’s not in our interests to make one of our opponents stronger.

Surely Petroro was in the room when Zach signed the last 5 year deal, and the extension, and the pay rise, and the next pay rise. Kinda funny how he forgets to mention this tidbid

I'm quite interested to see if this little saga isn't the main selling point of the next agents doco that gets released.

I guess we've played this well if we end up taking the deal... Hard to know what's really going on, but if Zerret's at the club next year I don't see how it benefits him or us. He wasn't himself all year, safe to say you can expect that level of performance and worse going forward.

What?
He had a great year. Not sure what more you were expecting from him.
