2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

Bit of a perplexing trade period. We tried our best with Marshall. I rate him a lot higher than others in here but glad we didn’t do something silly like 2 first round picks for him. Disappointed for Marshall though, brutal situation for him being replaced and having to play second fiddle. Can see it ending ugly.

Wish we could’ve landed Curnow, hats off to Sydney for creating hype around Hayward, who I personally think is overpaid and overrated and the last thing Carlton need but we all know they’re in the denial stages.

I don’t feel sorry for Merrett at all. He’s acting as if the rug was pulled on him. Yes, he has been a loyal servant but he chose to sign the fat contract and nobody came in as a replacement (as with Marshall) and they haven’t been good ever and it’s on him and his management for drinking the Dodoro kool-aid.

The Steele trade is baffling.

Oliver inevitable.

Petracca a crazy return for a player slowing down but will benefit Suns massively (must be nice having endless picks and academy players coming through).

I’m sure we will get creative come draft time. But for now a bit worrying that the most exciting thing to happen is us picking up Buckley…

Tricky not being pessimistic after a GF loss and then not nailing Curnow. I guess we wait and see how the season pans out but the Brisbane being a 3peat dynasty meme feels real.

Pray Worpel becomes Lachie Neale and we pull out some miracles in this draft…

In Wells we trust.
Honestly, what difference would have curnow made in the GF??

That GF highlighted very well some obvious deficiencies our side has had throughout the season, and Scott was right how he said at times he wasn’t sure if we could overcome the issues to make it.

Our midfield was absolutely pulverized…. It is very difficult to create tactics to win games of footy losing clearances by -17 and getting belted that badly around the ball.

Everything has a ripple effect.

Worpel imo is huge in addressing this… very good in and under mid at his best, would have helped on GF day.

would have Marshall helped?? Probably not.. nice to have, but wasn’t going to solve any issue on the day. He is an around the ground ruckman.

Curnow- tbh I wouldn’t be shocked if he went goalless on the day…

Bruhn- would be huge ( in and under mid). Yes he is a 15-18 touching mid, but he is pure inside mid, which our side is seriously lacking.

There are two clear things we need-

Inside mids + A grade mids in general… we only have 2 A grade mids where as brisbane have about 5-6.

Speedy pressure smalls. Yes we have small and medium forwards, but they are all endurance aerobic runner types, none of them are your explosive Charlie Cameron, Gary Rohan, Bobby hill types that can change games within minutes. We lack that electric pressure in our front half and it often bounces out too easily.

Think of how often Charlie Cameron in the GF created inferred or direct pressure that caused a coff up or goal… or even just his pressure throughout the season when he kicks no goals. We lack this sort of small or medium. This imo is where we miss Rohan quite a bit.

The salt from the opposition supporters is incredible.

Everyone treating it like we "lost" the trade period.

They want us to overpay so it costs us in the future.

We pick Worpel up for free and we keep trucking. No big deal.

When the reality smacks Carlton supporters in the face next year it will be fun. Not sacking Voss and losing Curnow is going to set them back for years.

I thought the fact that we threw 3 first rounders at an offer for Charlie shows that the club has had their confidence in Shannon's development dented.
I disagree.

We would have played Neale and curnow together. Neale is a key player for the next 10 years.

The curnow acquisition would have been more to create a huge forward line mismatch for us now and to give us some cover for life after Cameron.

Saints weren't dealing with us except for overs (glad we didnt) and Carlton weren't dealing with us at all (they are complete idiots).
As much as marshall would have been useful so we dont have to burn blitz workload wise we need mids way more.
Getting butters or walsh next year is more critical than anything we could have done this year.

In a weak draft, try and trade up to get and get the best Falcons kid of the last few years, Josh Lindsay. Better to do it now than trade multiple picks in a few years to get him home.

He will go high top 10 and we cant get up there.

dont forget adding buckley to the coaching staff.

Wonder if we flip 19 to Bombers for 27,30 Hunter Holmes and Jesse Meller

We have too few open list spots as it is. We'll likely be making only the three mandatory draft selections, so if anything we should be going the other way: looking to combine a few later draft picks into one earlier one.

I wish Charlie had just nominated GFC, and not other clubs. Very usual to do that right off the bat, and certainly complicated things.. if we were the only horse in the race, I reckon we would have probably got him 😔.
I'm glad we didn't get Curnow waste of cap space in an area we don't need.

Yeah the Marshall one makes sense to me - it would have been really good to get him, and that is why we offered a pretty good deal. But given our ageing list we can't sacrifice too many picks.

From a Saints POV - yeah you can say it was a great deal and they should have taken it, but really - TDK isn't that good is he? They still need a second or at least back up ruck and Marshall is a proven player.

Recon the only real loser in it is Marshall if it turns out he doesn't get much of a game.

Interesting that we went so hard for Marshall in the end. Mackie said we had even more of a crack than he thought we would.

Wonder how much of that is about trying to maintain our reputation of "getting it done" when a player nominates us. I do think that is worth paying "overs" from time to time.

Also wonder how much St Kilda rejecting the deal was down to strategy (ie. not wanting to make us better), spite, or if they just genuinely value the player. All valid reasons for them to reject a trade. Will watch that situation with great interest next season. Do we have another crack at him in 12 months time? Third time lucky perhaps.

Honestly i think opposition fans are pissed that we didn't get reamed.

You can tell some of them were desperately hoping we'd be forced to overpay.

Not sure how anyone could watch Harris Andrews absolutely destroy us yet again and think adding an elite tall forward wouldn't help.

To be honest, Marshall would have been great, Curnow was always a pipe dream but we achieved a little this trade period.

  • Landed Worpel which with Bruhn gives us much needed mid field depth.
  • The offer for Curnow forced Sydney to pay more for Curnow making it harder for them to come back up to the top.
  • Fair offer for Marshall, but fair by St Kilda rejecting it.

To be honest the moves made by Brisbane and Gold Coast, baring injury I dont see anyone getting near them in 2026, a year of consolidation of our list and giving Conway 12 months to get fit might be better for us long term.

We lost the 2020 Grand Final and won it in 2022.
I think for us a solid 2026 and set up for all out assault in 12 months time.

An elite tall forward is always helpful, but so is the method of entry into the forward line.
If you lose the pressure contest against Brisbane, you lose the game because they'll shut down your weapons (e.g elite ball users and line breakers) and maximise theirs. It's a shame because we brought that in the QF + PF (after QT), but not on the final day.

That is the ultimate we don’t want to deal with you rather than a value not being accurate or even overs

IMO Other clubs don’t want to trade with Geelong - they are just over us getting better period

Go Catters
I think the GFC should flag this with the AFL. Unfair trade practices comes under the AFL's purview. Granted, here, it cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt. The AFL should be able to review the Club's inner deliberations. They probably do it when they suspect collusion etc.
