Tyler Welsh averaged more goals than Toby Murray in the SANFL this year

Need to give him at least a few more years, especially as our development is questionable to say the least
I think we will know middle of next year whether Welsh is showing signs of improving enough.

I went to a handful of SANFL games this year, and wasn't too impressed by Welsh's effort and body language. Needs to mature a bit and realise his potential won't get him very far without the hard work.

Also, our 2026 best 22 forward line has exactly zero players we've developed through our SANFL side, so it's hard to know how good we are at developing that part of the ground in the reserves
Does anyone ever improve in our SANFL side?

It seems more like a dumping ground for guys not in the 23 than a place to develop players.

Worrell is about the only good player to have developed there in 12 seasons.

From the outside it looks as if we use a flat model approach where each of our teams AFL, AFLW and SANFL all aim for the best possible finish

Thats ok with the top 2 teams but the SANFL really should be full on developing

Now one can argue what the best way to do this is - I dont think playing players out of position in their 1st two years works - nor do I think flattening their talent in the name of structure is the best approach either

I would prefer our SANFL team to finish bottom if it means we run our talent in the appropriate spots

If after 3-4 years they havent gone further then move them out to the flanks etc

We've had a few defensive success stories from the SANFL. Worrell, Doedee, Butts, Hartigan, Keath

Anything forward of defense, you have to go back to Jarryd Lyons to find a quality player. If Luke Pedlar makes it, he'd be the second in a decade or more.

(Some may count Rory Atkins, I'm not going to be that generous)

The difference was Toby is genuine KPP size and has looked like an AFL player at times, Tyler however.
Tyler will never be a KPF, my hope was perhaps he could play a Jake Stringer type role but he's a long long way off it currently. Toby also has enough size and ruck talent to chop out in ruck at AFL level if required.

Not saying Welsh will make it, but I don't think he's in that different of a position to Murray. Currently, Toby is a battler with some serious flaws in his game. His marking is decent but I haven't seen much else to suggest he will be an AFL player

Well to my eye at this point it's not even close as AFL options if called on and Murray will always have the height advantage.

Fred Rodriguez is way way more ready for AFL than Charlie Edwards in year's one and two and that also applies to Sid Draper IMO, other than Sid's speed Rodriguez is more well rounded skills and footy I.Q. wise IMO.
Sid was touted as being the most ready to fit straight into the side, right?

Not really, he had a well documented pars defect in his lower back he'd been dealing with for years and also had shin splints issues in his draft year IIRC.
Hence he had a "managed" preseason.

When we drafted him, we were 15th and realistically he does fit into the 15th ranked side. He can develop and rotate across the half forward with periodic time running through the midfield.

However, within 8 months we were surprisingly in the top 4 and Sid Draper isn’t ready for that responsibility. He would play half forward 100% of the time and his mistakes would be exposed and used against us.

I think he will be better prepared for another crack in 2026 after his second preseason and his role more defined.

We should know within the first few weeks of pre-season.

If he shows up full of baby fat and is at the back of the runs - then he's not going to be an AFL player.

He has seen what the level is of SANFL and how far behind he is the top level. He must know he is miles off AFL level. If he isn't having the biggest preseason of all time right now and then come back completely ripped and fit, then he's not going to make it.

I think the messaging was all over the shop.

Oliver was mooted a long way out. Whether I agree he would have been the right fit the message seemed to be 'one short '

Our swivel to Petracca confirmed that.

Our interest in Steele etc also felt the club recognised we were one short

Only to fall back on organic growth

That provides its own issues with Nicks clearly not a farmer
I don't think they've ever come out saying that organic growth is a primary strategy. They've been pretty open about prioritising bringing in a mature, skilled mid, and they've also acknowledged that they weren't able to do that this year. The organic growth talk is just a way of highlighting that still have alternative options (which we do).

Hence why someone is probably going to be delisted and re-rookied.
Yes that’s what I was agreeing with. The original question was asking that we didn’t need to cut someone to take the 3 picks. But with Ah Chee in the PSD we cut and re-rookie someone so we can take our 3 ND picks, then still have space for Ah Chee in the PSD :)

I think people get way too hung up on average age of the 22. There's not much between 18th and 1st really.

To me its all about how old your best half dozen to 10 are.

We'd sit reasonably pretty in that regard i would think.

We have a lot entering their prime though, so need to start making a move
