2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

According to the Afl site between 44 and 57 picks are anticipated at this year's AFL Draft.
That would be one of the lowest intakes of draftees.
Some like Port are just moving some rookies onto the main list rather than going to the draft.
This should tell us that it is a bad draft to just delist everybody's punching bag just to bring in a risky pick.
Next year hopefully is a better crop and now that our Nga program seems to be improving we should have some better kids next year.

It's also why we shouldn't trade down from PICKS 1 AND 2 in a weak draft. **** me we will never have this opportunity again.

Take the two best players (after bidding on Gold Coast and Brisbane's NGA kids to make those kents pay fair-ish value) and move on.

I would love a fit Guthrie for a couple of seasons but hes played 10 games since 2022. Not a good stat at all.

"The 33-year-old has only played 10 games since lifting the 2022 premiership cup, dealing with significant Achilles, foot and quad injuries."

A retired Mitch Duncan with no pre season will have a better chance of playing than Cam Guthrie

Reckon there's very little chance we dont just take our current picks plus the NGAs tbh

Could it be that we’ve done the deep cull of our list over the past three years, and the reason we’re tight for spots is they’re all kids on their rookie contracts or short first extension, and we have extensive high end draft picks to use eating into the spots more quickly?
This isn’t true at all. Bazzo a prime example. Given a contract well before he should have. If we kept it open perhaps Aleer could be joining us ?

North turned him down, and they’re going into next season with Griffin Logue as one of their starting key defenders. Griffin Logue.

I’d argue Bazzo is better than Aleer as of today just quietly, even though neither are world beaters by any stretch. Aleer has done very little of substance to date.

Now, if Aleer puts its all together he could be great, which is arguably what we should be looking for, but given our razor thin KPD depth (Edwards, a delisted Sandy Brock and…uh…Ginbey?) it makes all the sense in the world why we kept Bazzo in the building.

Unsure in the wisdom of having a defender with the first name Leek.

Leek means spear. So he should be playing forward.

Edit: it means flat stone so... Maybe not so useful in attack or defense.

At least the first half of the season and preseason training, I would try and settle a lot of players into positions for the future.
Hutch - HF
Dewar - Wing and failing that, back to the forward line
A Reid - Ruck/ resting fwd
Gross - Midfield - Maybe start in beagles but just leave him in the middle.
McCarthy - Midfield. He can always go back to HB if that fails
Davis - on the other wing
Hough - Back Pocket manning up the small forwards

Just to name a few.
I think Baker is one of the few that can be used in multiple positions at this stage.

I really like our list but just think some of our players positions arent ideal.

And we need to be ruthless early on. Cole, Cripps, Duggan, Owies, Hall and Bo Allen starting in the beagles. Duggan perhaps bench but I wouldnt even use him there.

My starting line up would be

BP - Hough - H Edwards - Ginbey
HB - Starcevich - Young - Yeo
C - Davis - H Reid - Dewar
HF - Baker - Shanahan - Hutch
FF - Brockman - Waterman - A Reid/ruck

Mids - Hewett - McCarthy - Flynn

Bench - Graham, Maric, Champion, Kelly, Robertson

My main worry is the wingers and ruck obv. But I would like to settle Davis and Dewar on the wing for now.

This is obviously ignoring any new recruits we get from now until next year. Happy to add Duursma for Champion perhaps but we dont have him yet.
I like it. Switch Kelly for Duursma on the bench and it looks good. Hopefully Duggan isn't Captain next year. With Young and Starc added to the back line it's hard to see how he keeps his spot in the A team, even though he's contracted for 3 more years!

Would not be surprised to see Duggo and Owies starting round 1 though.

Ben Hobbs delisted

Out of all of Schonberg, Macrae, Berry Id say he is the one id have most interest in. Hope we get him over for a chat to get him as a rookie. Deserves a go as a pure inside mid

He's tripe.

We already have Clay Hall, who is much better than him.

Prepare for a dick-punching.

:sunglasses:

He had some games in the midfield where you can almost see the vision, cracks in bloody hard, but has a serous case of fumbles in tight and couldn’t consistently find it.

Just on this - the age (youth) and experience (not fully appreciating intensity of AFL) and injuries (lack of role models) of our list means training standards may not be fully up to scratch yet, which is something Waterman alluded to in an earlier interview in the year.

Bringing in more experience and on-field leadership, particularly on the training track will assist players like Hutchings, Maybe he has it - maybe he hasn't but I suspect for those of us sitting on the fence will know through the 2026 season.

The development of our 2024 intake is going to be really interesting this season.

To be fair, Harley in 2024 as a first year player distorted our expectations for first year players.

Out of the haul of 2024’s draft, I suggest the only player that wowed me was Shanahan.

Allan had his illness and was not given a set position to focus on.
Gross was chucked in midfield and was criticised for not having a tank. Fancy that of a first year player.
Grego was settled but his defensive role is one area we have depth and progressed well at WAFL
Davis was given a turn later in the season and showed enough to keep me interested.
Champion had a couple of opportunities and in a losing team with limited i50, it was tough going

The addition of 4 rookie spots should have a major impact with our development. The WAFL team should be much more competitive meaning the jump up to AFL will be significantly easier.

Allan and Gross need massive summers and hopefully flourish with their first full preseason. I would be keen to settle Allan on a wing. While the mini game plan should enable Gross to play the high half forward role provided he builds his tank
