Gross was chucked in midfield and was criticised for not having a tank. Fancy that of a first year player.
Agree, I believe he didn't have a great 2km time at the combine as well so his tank was always going to need work. Hopefully the effort is being put in. I like the look of Gross but I think he will be a slow build to a consistent AFL player.

Xander McGuire had him open to either WA or Vic back in July, not sure if any other reports have come out since saying just Vic.

Right now he’d probably take whoever is giving him the best contract

Yeah right. I must've missed that one.

Can't see us being into him anyway, tbh.

So glad to see the back of this dickhead, hope we don’t go there despite our ruck situation.

From a HUN article today:

“West Coast is interested in finding reinforcements for Matt Flynn and Bailey Williams, but it is understood they will not be chasing Cox.”

Also:

“Of the top 25 ruckmen to attend a centre square in 2023, the player with the highest rate to advantage was Marc Pittonet.

Pittonet can improve his possession rate and marking but at least will get first hands on the ball if the rules revert back to 2023 guidelines.

Following on from Pittonet was second placed Jarrod Witts (39 per cent), then Matt Flynn, Andrew Phillips and Max Gawn (all 37 per cent), then Todd Goldstein and Kieren Briggs (36 per cent), Meek (35 per cent), then Luke Jackson and Toby Nankervis (33 per cent).”

That’s right. Matt Flynn behind only Pittonet and Witts in % hitouts to advantage and equal to Gawn.

I’d be seeing if we can bump up Bailey Williams’ salary into the top 25% to ensure he’s a RFA next year. May be able to get a pick in the early 20s for him if the banding rules don’t change.

Archer coming along nicely for when we next contend and take Axel or BVR next year in their respective drafts.

Is that the rate of their hitouts won that go to advantage?

Flynn may score highly in that metric, but his rate of actually beating his opponent was pretty dismal.

Williams probably outperformed Flynn in terms of percentage of hitouts won, but his hitout to advantage rate is probably one of the lowest in the league.

34.0% of 47.7% according to Wheelo. So 16.2% of all ruck contests (including the ones he loses) he hits to advantage.

All I'm seeing is that he hit 1 in 10 to advantage last season. That can't be a good number.

% Hitouts to disadvantage would be a useful statistic when determining Bailey’s ruck output.

It backs up what several have said about our ruck stocks.
WC list management obviously think they are just short of terrible by pursuing English/D Cameron,Marshall in the last year!
Flynn is a solid 2nd ruck, not great but better than nothing.
BW is really not good at either and is filling in until we either trade in a better prospect and is then gone.
A Reid has huge upside and will be there within 3 years, this is the gap WC have been trying to fill to no success.

If we draft BVR next year he will be coming into backup ruck status by 2030.
Walsh looks a very highly talented ruck but if he costs a big ransom to get him out of the Tassie draft then unless he is NN then he would prove too expensive imo.
A Reid/BVR combo going forward would be a very good ruck pair and both tall enough, athletic enough and actually have good ruck skills.

My first thoughts are that if we decided not to pursue Callum Ah Chee then I don’t see why Sexton would be of significant interest- admittedly he would want to be here and would take up far less salary cap on a much shorter contract term but given Clarke has stated we’re happy with our small/medium forward group then Sexton isn’t a need

With these snippets about rucks, I'm starting to think Duff-Tytler will be one of our picks. Take what you can and figure things out later rather than overlook what is available and potentially miss out on other options later.

Does mention he played down back under Dimma before the recruitment of Rioli and Noble. Assuming running half back to free up McCarthy to move into the middle?

Not a fan but they are definitely looking at all options

Sexton had a bit of a weird career. Had some decent years playing as a small forward regularly popping up and kicking a goal or two each game (he was Gold Coast’s leading goal kicker in 2018 and 2019, which probably says a lot more about how bad those teams were than it does about his quality as a footballer), then had a couple of real nothing years where it looked like he was probably done, then randomly in 2024 switched to half back and piled up much bigger stats, then pretty much got turfed out to the VFL this year.

He’s going to be 32 next year and I feel like as a stop-gap signing I’d prefer someone like Dev or Blamries or whoever, who at least has some chance of breaking through and being a good performer. Not sure I am overly keen on dumpster diving for guys in their early 30s although I say that without much sense of whether they’d view Sexton as a small forward or half back, and knowing nothing about his possible contributions in terms of leadership or moving into a coaching role.

My thoughts - you can never have enough backs. Putrid player chase (position wise) that is unless, as you indicate, there are bigger plans to move Allen, Hough, McCarthy et al into a midfield role.

Jason johannisen has been delisted.

Any takers? LOL
