One of my favourite players in the chris scott era.
I think we can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that it's the correct call because we have all seen, at our own club and others, what happens when old guys become plagued by injury and then continue to try to play on. Doesn't end well. Body is broken down, and even if it wasn't, he's old and has missed a heap of footy. The likelihood he would be able to return in 2026 and contribute in some significant way would be very, very slim.

Had a good career, won a flag and a couple of B&Fs. He should be very proud, but when it's time, it's time.
Im not disagreeing with the probability side of things. Given what we know the odds were certainly not in his favour. That doesnt mean we know for sure it was the right call. It highly probably was.

It's the correct call.

They tried fixing his injury for 3 years without success.

He's approaching 34 years of age.

He is done.
Which injury?
He had several.
Wonder if we rookie him.

Guthrie?

I doubt it, because I think we would have mentioned that in the media release rather then the multitude of media saying thank you and acknowledging his career

Gunston was rookie listed by Hawthorn last year.
He attributed his awsesome season to doing regular PILATES and cutting out the weights. He looked dangerous every week he played this season. 73 goals at age 34. Twice he kicked 7 goals . This was his best season ever. Quite remarkable when you think about his journey.

It's been a simply astonishing late-career bloom. Probably the only other player I have seen burst out of late-career age decline like that is Tex Walker a couple of years ago.

I have never seen a long serving veteran get rookie listed

In terms of delisting veterans and picking them back up via the rookie draft, that generally only happens in cases where the player still has a year on their contact but they've retired - from a list management/salary cap perspective, picking them back up as a rookie allows their salary to be paid as per their last season

We've seen this over recent seasons with the likes of Brad Crouch, Sam Reid and Phil Davis

While the initial reports following his delisting were that Hawthorn was going to pick him back up via the rookie list to see out the 2025 contract he signed, that's not what actually happened

Instead, they picked him up with pick 1 in the pre-season draft meaning he was still on their senior list this past season - would seem they had an open senior spot after the draft that they maybe didn't expect

I think he's heading to NM.
Sounds like a little frustration at being delisted, and the injuries leading to that, but also still something to offer.
