Harry Dean is very, very good, for me he’s one of the best pure key defensive prospects I’ve seen in quite a while.

With that being said, this is obviously just a leverage play, bidding on Dean at 2 makes Carlton’s life pretty tricky, looks like we’re gunning for pick 9, to get them to be extra nice to us I’d be telling them we won’t bid on Walker next year too.

Yah. Not keen on Titchell tbh.

Should be targeting the 24-28yo range that can still bring decent football to the table as well as other merits.
I saw a game where Mitchell was playing, can't remember exactly against who... Carlton or Gold Coast I think? Thought he played pretty well? He only had four senior matches but he he averaged 23 touches, 4 marks and 6 tackles which shows more ability to get his hands on the ball than most of the spuds we have running around in the midfield.

Don't know much about his leadership chops but I don't think he's as cooked as most people seem to think he is.

You can add Ginbey and Waterman to the high training standards by Baker and Graham. Not sure who else though, Cripps I think. I'm sure there would be some others. But understandable that most kids just glide by at training and we are full of kids atm.

Strategically that would make a lot of sense with Carlton's current pick selections.
ATM, that bring our third pick in two places should they match.
Likely, they will trade at least one of these picks but they can't afford to go into deficit next year for Cody Walker so they'd want to be careful if they're required to match a bid for approximately 2,000 points.

Got to chat to Harry for a couple of hours over a Vic Country dinner earlier this year.
Really nice kid and then came out the next day and was BOG against Metro playing the McGovern role to a tee.
Blues have Ison as NGA tipped yo go in the 25 to 35 range so they will be needing decent points to cover an early bid.

I like the move. It should help us negotiate a better deal to move from 13 to 9

So for shits and gigs to the anti-CDT mob, who would you be happier with at pick 2....him or Dean?

With the delisted free agents, I’d priotise ‘older guys with injury niggles’.

We aren’t going to get young guys who’ve not got going at other clubs (that are almost as bad as us) and turn them into afl quality players.

Our development has been garbage, no reason to believe that’s suddenly going to change.

It would be good to get at least 3 years out of them, for when we lose the extra rookie spots in ~3yrs. It would mean we have some easy delistings and hopefully in 3yrs we wont need these types on the list and our current youngsters are closer to hitting their prime.

13+34+41+No Dean Bid for 9+43 sounds like a win win to me.

We need to avoid those with injury niggles (tbf to Mitchell he had 1 major injury rather than niggles). Senior players who are actually playing is key for us in the next 3 years.

Ideally some super hard workers who are 20-24 and have had some bad luck (an injury, positional challenges where senior players keep them out of the side, being generally played out of position). But aside from that 30-32yo’s with hopefully 2 years on the clock will work.

As much as we lack 24-28yo’s, I don’t think shopping for DFA’s in that age range is wise. There isn’t generally the improvement that is hoped, and the upside is much lower than younger guys (and obviously they don’t have the runs on the board of the older guys).

This might sound dumb but I’d include McGovern in that cultural clean out. It always seemed to me like he’s a purple circle kinda guy. It might be the Albany links, that’s what that place can be like… it’s probably an unfair statement

I know someone who knows him and youre not far off the mark lol.

Very exclusive individual apparently.

The Dean rumour was on the Richmond board a few days ago as a ploy to get carlton to waste draft capital or to trade up in the draft

I will also say about Mitchell, after he got back from injury he played like half the year in the VFL, got a few senior matches, got dumped back to the twos, and played in their VFL side’s finals match. I’m not totally plugged in to what happens with every Vic club but I didn’t hear anything about him bitching about spending so much time in the twos. There are a lot of guys who, as a former Brownlow winner, two time All Australian, and flag winner, would either say “stuff this I’ve got nothing left to prove” and hang it up, or agitate in the background for more time at AFL level feeling like they’re too good to be plugging away in the twos.

I have no idea if he’d be the right fit athletically or personality-wise but just the fact that he was willing to do the hard yards in the VFL and is open to a rookie list position at the worst club in the comp makes me think pretty highly of his character. Unless he has a Phil Mickelson-style gambling problem he should be in pretty good shape financially where he doesn’t desperately need to stay on an AFL list for an extra year or two. I think he just genuinely loves playing and wants to continue playing at the top level for as long as possible.

And we are really, really bad so can’t enforce training standards at the selection table

Yeah if Tom Mitchell is willing to play WAFL as required and has the correct attitude he has invaluable knowledge to pass on to our poorly organised midfield set up.

I know him through work. We use his plumbing business a lot. He's a real honest, legit and nice guy. He's pretty scathing of the Eagles culture though. We're all about the bottom line. I always knew it, but it's at ridiculous levels.

I personally think we should look at others before Mitchell given there’s probably only two places for mature aged players, but you’ve made a good case for why he should at least be considered

I guess it comes down to what we want to achieve with that position. Are we looking for someone who can develop into a best 23 player or a mature body that can assist in the development of players in the WAFL who could also fill a role in the seniors if we get a run of injuries

If it’s the latter then Mitchell makes some sense
