BREAKING NEWS!

AFL announced its latest equalisation method prior to 2026 season. As well as the universally loved Wildcard Round, AFL will further mix things up by introducing the CHANCE CARD!

It goes like this: with 5 minutes to go in the last quarter, the captain of the losing team can roll a dice, with a score of 4-6 earning him the option of selecting from a pack of Chance Cards, held by the senior Field Umpire. Chance Cards have the ability to even the score, win the game, or return your team's score to zero!

Whilst not yet confirmed, it's mooted that clubs from QLD & NSW will earn a Chance Card by simply attempting the dice roll & will be allowed to steal their opponent's best player or have a swathe of unexplainable free kicks awarded their way.

Pundits believe the first option will revolutionise the game but don't see the Northern States' preferences changing the game from its current state.

BREAKING:
Flow on impacts will include Flight Centre needing AFL bailout due to cancellation of several teams players and supporters next 3 years worth of September holidays being pushed back a week

I don't hate it actually.

If the impact is that the top 6 have a distinct advantage over 7-10, then I'm ok with that.

Also, we are about to have a 19th team and I don't think its a stretch to say that a 20th team will follow at some point beyond that - Northern Australia or something like that.

So if we have a 20 team comp, with 10 teams eligible but 6 having a distinct advantage, then I think thats not horrible and I really hate hte pre finals bye.

So you would have preferred us to have had no chance of making a grand final this season just gone?

We finished 8th and not far off 4th.

Please provide a list of all 10th placed sides that have been widely considered as unlucky to have missed the finals because of their draw.

Again - if you can’t make the finals because you had too many double ups against top 8 sides then you simply don’t deserve to play finals.
I only need to go back one year, to 2024 [Edit:] to find a 10th-placed team that deserved to play finals.

Freo finished 10th, 2 points behind 8th-placed Carlton and with a better percentage than the Blues. Freo were miles ahead of 11th-placed Essendon (4 pts but over 18%) and were widely considered to have been amongst the Top 8 sides for most of the season.

I haven't looked at their draw for 2024 - don't have the time for it - but do recall them losing their last few H&A games, which would've been double-ups, to some pretty good sides.

Their record against top 8 sides that year was 3-8. Their percentage was 111.9. From July onwards they only beat Melbourne (14th), West Coast (16th) and Richmond (18th) - all of them at Optus. I know you get a kick out of playing the contrarian but you only proved my point - Fremantle did not remotely deserve to play finals last year.

Also - leaving the AI prompt in there was * chef's kiss *.

Interesting... thanks for telling me something about myself that I wasn't remotely aware of. Always good to learn something new about oneself!:thumbsu:

How about 2019? Essendon finished 8th (48 pts, 95.4%), ahead of Hawthorn (9th, 44 pts, 108.7%) and Port (10th, 44 pts, 105.4%). Do you think the Bombers were a better side and deserved to play finals ahead of the Hawks and Power that year?

Did they win more games? Then yes.

If they finished 8th, and we finished 9th...yes

I'll explain my logic here...if they finished 8th, they deserves to play finals...at least ahead of the team that finished 9th.

The reason I say this is that we have a final 8, so the team that finished 8th plays finals, and the team that finished 9th doesn't.

And here I was thinking you'd never admit to Essendon being better than Hawthorn at - anything.

Well done - you've proven me wrong once again.

In fairness I’m using critical thinking and you’re using AI - it’s not a fair fight.

Can't argue with that logic - and the same will apply to the side finishing 10th next year, who'll deserve to play finals under the rules that will prevail then.

Only until they scrap it the year after after realizing it's a ****ing stupid idea.

You reckon I'm a bot? Now, that's something else about myself that I didn't know - thanks once again!

P.S. The AFL website's ladder has a filtering option that allows you to look at ladders from past seasons. It's really not too difficult for a human to use.

The final 8 stood the test of time after the initial reservations around it when it was first introduced 25 years ago.

I reckon the Final 10 might settle down fairly quickly too. We won't be talking about it in a year or two.

I didn’t say you were a bot - you clearly used AI though. AI is an interesting tool but if you’re going to use it to form your arguments then I’ll gladly mock you.

For what?

I really, really didn't but am genuinely curious to know which part of my arguments were, in your opinion, augmented or aided by AI.

2019 is a better example (probably hawk bias) but is seems rare

Well they persist with round zero so I wouldn’t hold my breath that they get insight.

I honestly can't think of any other sport that feels the need to **** with things every year as a matter of course, as if they think they're not doing their job if they're not continually tinkering.

It's Marketing 101..Different Is Better!

It wouldn't be so bad if they tinkered with things for the right reasons, and thought things through...but they don't.

Deliberate out of bounds was easy...did it look like the player meant for the ball to go out? Easy.
Insufficient intent? Ok, tell me how much is 'sufficient'? Err...
What do you instruct the players as to how much is 'sufficient'? Errr...
How does each umpire have the same idea of 'sufficient'? Errrr....

The gambling industry is unhappy about teams resting players once they've qualified for finals? Can't have that! Let's bring in an unnecessary bye before final that actively disadvantages teams that finish top...there's that problem solved.

Keeping the gambling industry happy more important than the game...
Keeping the bucks rolling in is more important than the game...

This shit will legitimately make people stop bothering with footy.

Lol calm down with the hyperbole. What a ridiculous take.

Its one more week of footy with two more extra cut throat finals instead of no footy at all. Makes the season relevant for more teams for longer.

I love it. I've been wanting this for years

People can pis off with this 'participation trophy award' crap, the dogs and Swans would have been deserving finallists this year. 9 and 10 have to win 5 away finals to get the flag, its fair.

Their main cockup was giving it an American name, people react to that without thinking it through objectively.

We still have the final 8 which is a great system. We just get two extra finals in a dead week to set it up and now 5th and 6th have a greater advantage over 7th to 10th.

We lost to Essendon that year. We also lost to Melbourne and Sydney who both finished bottom 4.

We play enough games that you can't really consider yourself unlucky should you not win enough to make finals.
