Probably deserves a thread

Rumours are Fremantle have approached with interest in signing him on the rookie list. Cox wants a 2 year deal to make the move after Dockers offered 1. Expectation is Dockers agree and give him the 2 year deal. He will just play WAFL as backup to Jackson/Darcy... which isnt a bad spot given the injury proneness of Darcy

To me it looks like a good pickup for the list

I was confused initially when I read this.

But the more I think about it the more I like this move for Freo- more as a forward than as a ruck. He’s shown a decent enough ability to kick goals at the pies and I think playing 3rd string out of the goal square to their mobile forwards would work at times through the season. He’d certainly draw a defender away.

Also provides some experienced cover if Darcy/Jackson are injured also.

Even giving him 2 years doesn’t really hurt freo either- list profile is really good. So like the move.

not sure about this.

watching him live at the prelim final he could barely move. andrews paid him zero respect and the two goals he did kick were charity. i expect all the teams with elite interceptors would make similar moves if cox were to be playing.

if one of treacy / amiss / darcy / voss / jackson were injured i think fremantle would be better served by just playing shorter than by trying to replicate their structure using cox. i guess as a break glass in case of emergency he could be serviceable.

I mean you’re not getting him in his prime, nor I think would be expecting him to play a full season either. Neither will be draw the #1 defender either.

Without knowing what niggles he had going into the prelim I wouldn’t judge his capability on that- plenty go into finals with injuries they wouldn’t play in mid year. Collingwoods delivery to him wasn’t great iirc either that day.

But I think with a set role he can move just enough to draw someone away- Treacy and either Amiss/Voss leading at the footballer and Cox tracking back. This would be in the scenario one is injured and Cox is the replacement. I don’t think you play 4 talls.

But I think in particular where I think he will be good for you- he’s shown a real aptitude to proving people wrong over the journey too. I dare say there’s a bit of fire in the belly given he’s been let go by the pies.

The big yank was absolutely stunned that he didn't get another deal at Collingwood:
Cox breaks silence on 'shock' Collingwood exit

He may well offer Freo something, if required, but he can't be that surprised can he?

Bruised ego perhaps.
If Cox was not selected for the finals, then yes it would have been little surprise to be delisted. But to be recalled for the finals, and he did a decent job in the QF, that may have raised hope that he might be retained for one more season.

This selection just makes no sense at all to me

  • They dont need him foward with Amiss , Treacy & Voss
  • They dont need him in the Ruck with Darcy & Jackson
  • 35 years old
He basically replaces Liam Reidy (traded to Carlton)

Fremantle only have one other ruckman on the list not playing 1sts - Aiden Riddle, who's a skinny 19 year old and has to run around in the shower to get wet.
