With BAKER and O'DONNELL upgraded to the main list I think puts the count on the main list at 35 players (correct me if I am wrong) and we are allowed up to 38. I keep seeing speculation that we can only use 2 of our 3 picks and going to trade on the night. Is that being driven by the belief that "Darcy II" is already slotted for the last main list spot? and we are unwilling to risk losing him if he is bid on after our pick and doesn't make to the rookie draft? As much as I like the nostalgia/hope I think if there is player we believe has more potential at 53 (could be in the 40's by the time it is used) we would use it. Especially when the alternative is a clear rookie prospect if not for his name.

We have a total of 3 picks across both drafts. So if we pick someone else with 53, we miss out on Darcy altogether.

Looking what Twoomey wrote today, it looks like we have more room than that. He's suggesting we use 3 picks and get Darcy in the Rookie draft. If thats true and he shows half of what his brother can do with his reading of the play.... he could be a huge rookie pick.

I think ppl are forgetting that any players tied to clubs that don't get bid on become a cat b rookie including F/S.

It also mentions this, but nothing about being able to Cat B list them, only Cat A.

FATHER-SON – ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

The Father-Son Rule previously applied to players selected at the National Draft. Under the rule, other AFL clubs can bid for eligible players who have been nominated under the Father-Son Rule by an eligible club. The nominating club can select the eligible player by forfeiting its next available pick in the draft if a bid has been made by another club. If there is no bid from another club, the nominating club forfeits its last pick in the National Draft.

A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player’s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player.

I’m a bit surprised that we weren’t more ruthless in our list management this past few weeks. I would have culled a couple under contract for next year to free up some spots for a couple more kids to come in.

If we do chase Butters successfully next season, it will be two years in a row with minimum picks in the draft, just before Tassie come into the scene. Will be hard to get good kids then.

We have a number of NGA kids and father sons next year. Levi West and El Souki leading the pack. Hopefully Cooney can have a good draft year too.

I'm normally in favour of cutting hard, not this year. I don't think the draft is very good, it's lacking both quality and depth IMO.

We at least have plenty of young talent coming through. Winning the VFL premiership is a good sign of that.

JOD speaks so well. Definitely has leadership potential. Excited to see what he can produce onfield. He made massive strides this year & will only get better.

Totally agree we hang on to players for too long, Coffield very lucky. Personally thought last year was when we should've cut harder. Draft had good depth.

Don't get the hype around him tbh. Feels like the next Cody Raak lol. If he had shown half his brother's potential he would probably not fall to the rookie draft

I probably went a little harsh on him after the Freo game, but he seems the type to put his head down and work. Hopefully he has a good year and gets stronger.

There's a lot of players for the dogs out contracts next season for a huge list change to happen so it's likely that dogs will go into next years draft looking to pick up at least 4 players.

If we get Butters, our first picks will be in the third/fourth round, so unless we get picks back from Port as part of that deal - it's no different to delisting players now and using later picks.

But happy to disagree on approach. I personally feel there are players that we know are not going to make it and if we are heavily relying on them or a first year player in 2026 - it makes little difference as clearly our season has gone pear shaped. And in that situation, I'd rather test out a kid than someone we know is being delisted at seasons end.
