2025 Draft Thread

Incredible the reaction from Clubs, Media and supporters to the draft after our club was widely mocked for even suggesting things needed to change as early as this time last year.

Always the way really.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" chiefly so those that do sin can then pile on and make things a certainty to those who have the power to alter.

We're the joke that has nothing anyone wants, so we can cast shade, get derided, then the pile on happens from those that screw the pooch and got back for a great many times and lawyer up (ie Hawks and their injunctions) to continue to "important".

You then have drafts like this one where first round could have had maybe 60% academy and FS instances to fill it and be "obvious" that is smacks you in the face, then as we all know, a week is a long time in footy for narratives to shift so status quo is still engaged.

Kinda why I'm of opinion the league dies if we don't exist. Sides like Essendon, Carlton, Tigers, Pies and all the big dogs, they can leave and it'll survive, might be shit as no cash, but it'll survive, sides like us go, it gets bland and rotted at the core as self interest trumps entertainment to be a shade of what it was and eventually it cannibalises itself as self interest wins out for the minority who succeeded in chasing the triumph. And it's delicious.

Well, if Ison, WC’s Williams, Max King or McCarthy aren’t bid prior to their club’s next picks (which aren’t far away in most cases), then we might not move too much further. Hopefully 34, 35, and 38 will go, at the least. We say it every year, but given the lack of depth this year, it’s hard to see any from that group of sliders lasting to 35.
Exactly, we either trade up for the JPou, Ludo, NHH group, or we settle for what we were going to do (ignoring swaps/sliders) with our late picks and get Allan or Davis.

As you said, that group wont last to our current selections, unless of course JPou literally said to everyone he's playing with his brother only and everyone else can get stuffed.

Depending on what other selections they want to do, it may mean that those clubs trade their picks out before the bids....eg WCE have picks 29 & 34, Carlton have 28 & 38, Collingwood have 32 & 37 and Sydney have 35 & 41. It will give us more of a chance to get into that 2nd round. The points cut off at 36 will be the issue for those clubs.

I think RTB and the club are in love with J Pou, but there will be a number of players we should be looking at - Ludowke, Hetherton, Thredgold, Emmett, Hibbins-Hargraves, Allen, Peucker. The club might even rate Greeves?

Depending on the Fincher situation, players like Byrne, Dalton, Wright, Oudshorn-Bennier, Ainsworth, Taj Murray, Holmes might be available at our later pick/s.

Fingers crossed we can jag a trade!

That's why we can't trade a pick in thats in between 30 & 40.

I'd go hard for 29 and a future with 2027 F1 to get JPou. Accept the bid for Fincher and hope we can use the change and 2027 thirds to get a pick for Ludowyke.

You would have thought that a key forward would be Melbourne's priority, but they are all over the shop with their recruiting.

If we are true to our word we wont match the bid which will be disappointing. I am drawn to the idea of these worthy NGA kids ending up at the Saints. Melbourne probably see Fincher as a replacement for Judd McVee which is understandable.

Hopefully the club have some surprises in store for us, to soften losing Fincher if it occurs?

Well would you look at that!! It seems that until others get kicked in the balls on draft night, they don't seem to understand that getting kicked in the balls on draft night is not a good thing!! I think the fact that Melbourne got two top 10 picks from the Suns for Petracca and yet the Suns ended up with picks 2 & 5 while Melbourne ended up with picks 11 & 12 or whatever on the night, is the most special irony of it all !

I think the AFL public finally got it last night, and I'm enjoying the salt! The fact is that the AFL is driven by focus groups and opinion polls and this will rattle their cage. The AFL media sycophants can spew whatever tripe they want, but the average AFL fan looks at ladder positions and draft position numbers and the cognitive dissonance doesn't fly. Substantial change is coming.........

If I remember rightly, and I am younger than you Joffa. Anthony Harvey was considered to have the potential to be as good as Robert. However injury got the better of him.
He was smaller than banger, I don’t really remember him having injury issues.

I’m not sure why he moved on so quickly, my impression was that he was a decent player with good skills but not quite up to regular vfl football. He wasn’t with us long, had a good career with Norwood in the sanfl.

Crazy not to take Fincher imo.

Suns not only got 2 & 5. They got four academy first rounders, on top of giving up two top tens for Petracca. That is a total f***** joke. They finished 6th and including the Flanders trade they had 6 first rounders. Yep the draft is all about equalisation.

Fox footy -

Bids on Kye Fincher (St Kilda NGA), Max King (Sydney Swans academy) and Zac McCarthy (Collingwood NGA) are hard to place at this stage. Sources suggest St Kilda would be less likely to match for Fincher if his name was called before Pick 35.

St Kilda isn’t due to enter the draft until Pick 40. The Saints had been linked to a move into the first round for Jevan Phillipou — the brother of young gun Saint Matteas Phillipou — in recent weeks, but now might have him land in their lap without having to move up the order. Although Richmond has put work into the Woodville-West Torrens prospect.

The Saints have also been linked to Oakleigh Chargers winger Sam Allan — whose 2025 campaign was ruined by an ACL rupture — and East Fremantle’s Ollie McManus – the son of Dockers great Shaun McManus

Great post...
Speaking of the media tripe....(I posted this on the Media threead -sorry bout the double, but I think it is important that we never feel ashamed of the NEPO baby prod)

...
I was chaffing at the bit this morning. SEN Sam Edmond and ‘Coons’ were taking calls about the draft and posturing about how good the Nirthern Academies are at the expense of callers who felt genuinely miffed that the Subs get given advantages. It was appalling. I generally have some respect for Edmond but I’m losing it. This was pure posturing.
Caller: AFL are helping Gold Coast win and they won’t stop til they get a flag
Edmond and Coons: disagree - we are getting players up there involved in footy.
What a croc?
Why are we here?
We love our team!
We demand a level playing field!!
These guys just want to create tension - fair enough. But when they spit this kind of tripe - conflating the spread of the game with unfair practice they are really stepping over the line. I hope someone calls them out for it. But I know that controversy never harms them.
