what happened with Greeves?

Hawthorn even tried to get him into their academy but then they dont even draft him?
Theres a rumour going around that he chucked a sickie to get out of the combine where he knew he wouldn't test well. Real tough if he was actually sick, but its pretty obvious what selectors thought of it (if it is true).

Just passing through to see what you lot thought of our 3 central selections ;)

I see it like this. Marsh may well be groomed for a wing with his height, mobility, long kick and marking ability. Can drift forward and knows where the goals are. Ludwyke is a swing for the fence as a ossible long term FF tex replacement. If he does work out then it allows Thilthorpe to move further up the ground, pinch hit in ruck etc.

Next year we need to nail that mid and if its via trade then fine. We are absolutely stocked full of talls now

Kids and managers do this all the time for the National Combine. These kids know what their results are, so rather than be ranked below par for all to see, it's a "Did Not Test" next to their name instead.

More I think about it it honestly seems a bit like the first tentative baby-steps the recruiting team is trying to take to protect against Tasmania taking most of the tall timber from the 2027 and 2028 drafts, so it wouldn’t even surprise me if they still look at tall options even in the SPP or next year’s draft.

Ogilvie does have a habit for better or worse of over thinking about things that could happen multiple years into the future rather than the immediate present and trying to predict things.

No it would just be they rate their rookies above anything they could pick now.
They can then pick a few rookies and have a few train on and add them to the list at some point in the preseason.
They have Stephenson and two others training with them already.

Their list gets shallower by the day.

IMO I think drafting a potential mid like Onley or Rodriguez would have been the smarter play. Nothing against Archie as he seems like a good kid but just not seeing what the appeal is, unless Filthy is going to be spending more time as our main Rick. Time will tell I guess

A seriously decorated year - VIC Metro MVP, Coates team of the year and a Premiership, all the talk of being a first rounder

35 touched and 4 goals in the CTL prelim final

And not drafted. Bizarre, feel for the lad.

Given our lack of midfielders, I would've taken him at 56.

Look, I had him 10-15 or so spots above where he went, so in this draft it’s fine. Reportedly had interest from other clubs, too

But it definitely feels like an unbalanced offseason
Let's see how he develops.. to be clear it's a value pick, as in on talent I agree he should have gone earlier, just didn't think it was a list need

I think this is a home run swing. On top of everything else in his profile, the kid just turned 18 yesterday.

Hell, a growth spurt and we might accidentally have drafted a developing ruck, which probably has Reid asking for the entire scouting department shut down and everyone fired.

I think a plausible explanation is that Archie Ludowyke has great potential and our forward picks will enable Thilthorpe to play much more as a ruck where his agility, mobility and skill will make him like an extra top shelf midfielder. While a somewhat different player, Thilthorpe in the middle could be somewhat like Max Gawn in his prime, someone who covers the ground (even much more so) and is a play making and goal kicking match winner.
Can be the only explanation I was thinking about too. Look the kid has something just thought we had different list needs and feels a little too heavy now

That article screams of being written by his manager in an attempt to get him drafted. Hasn’t worked thus far. Likely a talent like that will get rookied. And has one year to prove he’s got something.

Only ever going to be one main Rick:

We need height on the list. Yes we need mids but height is a must as well. Plus probably we probably thought it better to take 2 rated forwards this year as next year we will probably end up yet again throwing deals galore for quality mids and we wont have too much high end to take to the draft to address forwards next year.

Overall I dont mind it.

So with leaving that extra spot open if they do trial options in pre-season you’d hope an actual dynamic, quick, specialist small forward will be part of those trialled.

Seriously it has been 12 years since they drafted Charlie Cameron and 8 seasons since his departure and they have never looked to draft anyone to replace what he provided in the forward line.

Or maybe they just look to quadruple down and grab another tall forward.
Agreed I think this is our biggest need outside of a premium mid. Hard to get a premium mid outside the top 10 so I would have targeted a small forward

Honestly believe they have passed on all draft picks tonight to have money for AH Chee tomorrow

Can’t wait for tomorrow
They are a complete mess. Imagine passing when your list is total garbage and highly regarded talent was still on the board. Although you have to go back to Kane Farrell in 2017 to find a single player they've drafted outside the 1st round who's done even remotely anything, so maybe they have no confidence at all in their ability to draft talent that isn't completely obvious.

💯 long term list need

Tex retired next year and behind RT and Fog we are thin in quality

Finbar is on a one year deal
Welsh looks a bust
Toby Murray looks unlikely

Get Archie in the door now and give him the thine to develop without the pressure of playing AFL in 2026

Thought there was an interesting trend where clubs clearly prioritising speed, run and carry in the draft to suit the modern game. Lots of circa 180cm half back, wing and half forwards taken. The players not picked typically lacked these traits showing less demand for the bigger bodies. Think this is a weakness on our list. Hopefully Oscar Ryan comes along this year.

Finbar will stay until we have replacements that force him out of the depth pool. Bit tough to write him off. Could end up being a good recruit.

Cadman at pick #1 was in his 5th year in 2025 ....its taken him 4 years to show his wares with some degree of consistency

Archie would have to be on a similar timeframe TBH

The other part is they're all key forwards, which means we have key defense as a backup option if one starts to fall off the pace.

I don't think it's too difficult to imagine any of these kids we picked up in recent years (well, except Welsh) making that switch and bouncing around for a while as a Billy Framptom like KPD.
