If Sam Berry was slow, we don't walk ourselves right into the trap of playing him for 12+ games and overrating a 12-15 disp mid.

Dude got games because he's quite explosive, it's what made him a social media inside mid.

He's strong and powerful I wouldnt say he is fast.

I dont see him out running too many other AFL midfielders beyond 20m

Im going off two draft profiles which both said a weakness is his speed, at 178cm thats not a great combo.
Richard Tambling was supposedly lightening quick on testing ....but he didn't play quick at AFL level

Testing on wooden floorboards isn't the same as playing on grass .....so you can't necessarily equate Combine testing to how a player plays ......the agility test is the one I find the most curious measure of a players, playing style

It blows my mind testing is not done on grass

I don't care what the draft profiles say go watch some game time, he's not slow

How in the hell do you arrive at his speed utilizing that footage .....there were no examples that show he's no different to a Sam Berry

Nicks has said the team needs more speed and power in the midfield and across HB

How the **** does Tom McGuane address this need….

Tom played for Collingwood VFL this year and struggled at that level - was the key reason why the Pies and probably every other club over-looked him

This is so ****ing Hamish - continues to waste lost spots

You're unlikely to find that with SSP train on-player

Totally disagree
No SSP train on player has either speed or power please

Port have invited one SSP player with good foot speed

Players may not have both but they should have at least one of those attributes - Speed, Size or Power

No point having anyone on the list that can’t compete

Size, Strength or Speed matters

There's plenty of footage available of all his entire Nationals, Coates Talent League and VFL games available if you care to take the time.

SSP players with size or speed usually have significant flaws, like disposal or footy IQ.

There's no point taking another Ronin O'Connor type (big but can't find the football) or an Anthony Wilson (fast but that was it)

He looks like he can find the football at least, which is more than I can say for some of the midfielders in our starting 23.

I guess the club would be hoping that he could turn into a Laird type.

No speed at all in that clip was shown. It was a standard speed expected from most

He has an unco kick at times

Handballs to receivers were good but overall I saw a general everyday player that may or may not make it

If a player has slipped through all 18 clubs in a weak draft, it means he's not expected to make it as an AFL footballer. So, there is no point in picking the prospect who is likely to be the best of that bad bunch in the hope that he is slightly above expectations and becomes a fringe AFL player.

It's far better to target the player who's a 90% chance of being a bust and a 10% chance of being a top 15 player.

Is that McGuane or Foot? Who knows? Hopefully Haggis.

But it's not a fail if we sign someone in the SSP and he doesn't make it. It's a fail if we get a fringe AFL player.

Our record for late/ rookie picks used in 2015 to 2024:
Top 15 (18%) - Keane, Murray, Keays, Seed, Greenwood, Keath
Best 22 (15%) - Hinge, Butts (would be in another team), Stengle, Frampton, Murphy
Fringe (15%) - Nank, Borlase, Parnell, Sholl, Easy
Fail - (52%) - Burgess, Gallagher, T Brown, Newchurch, Turner, Hately, Crocker, A Taylor, Strachan (but did his role), Edwards, Wilson, Gibson, Jarman, Davis, Signorello, Beech, Hunter

Too early to tell - Ludowyke, Maley, McAndrew, Welsh, Turray, Bond, Ah Chee (I'm kidding)

It's not to see how fast they are in games necessarily, just to compare to others. So need identical conditions that don't change due to grass type, mower blade height, sand-based, dewy, couch vs kikuyu, impact of worms etc

sure, but that means that they'll have some other major flaw.

People are acting like there's some golden goose player just waiting for us to give them a shot.

also McGuane ran a sub 3 second 20m sprint

All the main testing is done on the same day.

If they want to compare across events, get them to do a second, much less important test on a hard surface

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most train-on invitation players will have a weakness of some kind

Not too many blue chippers floating around the country and ammo leagues

you can't make the tests standardized on grass

It's a trade off.

You can either have a non representative but standardized test done, or a representative test.

With the main important test done on the same day with everyone there, the main testing should be done on an actual gameday surface

The testing is done for many years, at many venues, all states and tracked/compared over time

Even on the one day the turns in an agility run will get worn after a few goes on grass

Just creates variables
