Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

I remember watching Lewis first game at the G and being quite concerned about his legspeed especially having picked him at 7. The rest is history.

Geez what about some of the names in that draft profile. Meyer Willitts 🤣🤣

Could he become a Jake Stringer type? Plays mostly forward with some burst midfield minutes. If he becomes hard to hang onto he could be a real difference maker.

I see OG as our next big bodied midfielder, to crack into this midfield he just needs to build the tank, focus on defensive application. He won’t push out Nash unless he focuses on what he does without the ball.

I don't care about which pick OG was taken with.
I see an elite footballer in his clips.

The only challenge is getting his fitness levels up to AFL midfield standards.
If he can't, then he still has plenty of ability to become a very good forward.

OG will become a good senior player for us IMO.
Agreed The Chad and I
Some players rise when the level increases. Others don’t. Ollie has consistently been at the top of every level throughout his junior sporting life, and nothing suggests that will change.

When placed in an AFL environment, I believe Ollie will not only rise to the level... he will rise to the top.

I am "Team Ollie" and will watch his assent with relish.

Agreed.

Irrelevant where he was selected.

Having said that, initial feeling is he is similar to Charlie Constable (who just won a Sandover Medal) who was simply too good at state level, but lacked the ability to cover the ground to impact at the highest.

The answer isn’t simply to “trim some fat” either.

Ollie might need a decent amount of time/effort on improving his athleticism.

I reckon the great thing about Greeves more than most rookies is the scope to be anything. Rookies always have that sense about them, but being so well-credentialled leading into it really gives him that little boost for me. Maybe he doesn’t make it, but what if he does, and what if he kills it? That’s what I love about him.

looking forward to hearing the up and downs along the way!

Interesting analysis.
One thing gives me optimism. He trained with the club and we would've chatted back and forth.
We picked him knowing he hasn't had much time to build his tank. But on a one year Rookie deal. So there's obviously risk and queries on the kid.
Good luck Ollie.

That's the trait of the really good to great ones. The level goes up and they quickly rise to it.

Going to be interesting to see how he can go at Box Hill, that will be the tell if his junior careers followed that trajectory.

Once you're playing against grown men in AFL training environments, there's nowhere to hide.

Conversely there's also nowhere for the great raw talents to hide as well. We've seen two very different examples in Calsher Dear and Jai Newcombe the past few years. Here's hoping he announces himself as a member of that group, with an insanely focussed pre-season and some solid impact in his early games.

Like most have already said he has to put the work and I'm sure he will and with the other 17 teams passing him over he has plenty of fuel to drive him in proving them all wrong.

This kid has a very long way to go to be compared to Jordan Lewis.

If he can put in the effort that Lewis did every week, he will have his lick of the icecream as well.
Hopefully instead, he stays at Hawthorn.

He ran a 6.40 for the 2km.
It's not top shelf, but he's no slouch.

Super talent. It's a great pick.
I missed his time for the 2km time trial:
  • the 16th best EVER time for a 2km time trial at the draft combine is 6.00
  • The equal-7th best time in 2025 was Aiden Schubert's 6.21.

How are people so bearish on this guy "because of his athleticism" when he's pulling numbers superior to Sharp's, who is also a couple of inches shorter and lighter, especially when OG has only been focusing on footy full time for one season???

OK, he's got work to do, but falling to rookie doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Greeves
2km: 6.40 -
20m: 3.10s
Agility: 8.24s

Sharp
20m: 3.12s
Agility: 8.75s

Where did you manage to find those times ? Pretty interesting if correct.

Speaks well and appears grateful for the opportunity.
Agreed. Haven’t heard him before but really sounds sincere and like he is ready to make the other clubs look foolish. Sliding in the draft may have been a blessing.
