I don't understand how Ed Sheeran is a thing.

Now, I do understand music is subjective. And it certainly doesn't bother me that music I don't like becomes popular. But I had avoided all Ed Sheeran music with the exception of Shape of You, which is not my cup of tea but has some interesting elements, so I assumed he was massively famous because he has other songs like that. But then my daughter asked to put him on in the car, it started playing a playlist of his hits, and they were all so bland and milquetoast, just so uninteresting. If you told me he was a moderately successful musician, fine, but he is a global superstar packing out stadiums.

I don't understand.
Being a genuinely nice person helps a lot I reckon.

I guess Ed Sheeran is this generation's version of Bob Dylan or Neil Young but I could name dozens of their songs while I could only name a few of Ed Sheeran's songs and I can't see his songs still being remembered 50 years later like their songs are now.

I don't dislike Ed Sheeran, but I just can't see him as a stadium artist. People who to my ear are no better or worse play at the local for free in front of tens of people most weekends.

Taylor Swift's fame has definitely exceeded her talent at this point, but she's an attractive female and puts on a whole production so I can see why that has become a juggernaut. Ed's just a guy with an acoustic guitar who stands up and plays some songs. There are plenty of people I would pay to see do that but standing in the middle of Optus Stadium with 114,000 other people to do so isn't mathing.

I know absolutely nothing about him, if he genuinely is a good bloke, well, I guess it's nice that this difficult-to-understand thing is happening to him and not some w***er. Still incomprehensible to me.

Pretty much nailed it. If I saw him in a pub, I'd probably think 'he goes perfectly adequately'. Seeing him pack out a stadium boggles my mind.

There are imo very few decent artists around, but then, I’m a cranky old boomer who thinks the best musicians came during the 60’s and 70’s
Because they did.
That's because they did.

Every era has new artists and new genres develop over time but there are stadium acts and there is Queen at Wembley.
Wrong.

First, the correct answer is 60s and 90s ;)

Second, there is lots of great music around, it's just as we get older, we find less time to seek out new music with all our other responsibilities and pursuits, and there's no longer the singular outlet for discovering new music as releases on radio have been replaced by searching out music online in your own time. I'm regularly adding 10-15 new albums (which is not a huge amount) each year to my playlists that are high quality.

Speaking of things you don't get, who would pay to go listen to Oprah.

I mean in the US fine, she would be an inspiration to a lot of black women.

But in Australia who honestly cares.

Probably hoping for some expensive prize.

I watched Oprah interview MJ and Charles Barkley together and it was honestly one of the best interviews ive ever seen. Shes a great host. Lets her guests talk rather than talk over them

Charles Barkley is the best. Even if you have no interest in basketball you could watch Inside The NBA and be entertained.
