I think the difference with that analogy is No one could do what Warne could.

Now no one in this team is as good as Smith but I think it’s fair to say they could at least try to value their wicket just as much.

And not many in the history of the game have done what Smith did. It's not just grafting, it's having the technical skills and ability to think clearly under pressure to be able to effectively counter-attack (and to be nearly impossible to bowl to).

A moist, juiced up wicket Day 1 with the hot weather to follow would have made it a coin toss game. Whoever bowls first wins. The worst possible type of pitch

This looks like it will be perfect and go the distance

Lots of grass which will hold it together despite the hot weather

Decent scores first innings for both teams then the pitch breaks up and takes spin for the 2nd innings
They've let the underlying base of this wicket get way too dry over the last two or three weeks, probably a fair bit longer. The solution wasn't then to juice the top layer up over the bone dry base. The damage was done weeks ago - way too many deliveries died through to the keeper on day 1 and held up in the wicket. Of course they're going to leave the extra mm of grass on top - you would on a normal base for a test let alone something that dry.

The guy has gone through 2 potential career ending injuries (elbow and back stress fractures) that have cost him about 3 years at the top level. Clearly he has to manage how he plays.

Averaged 140-145 clicks through his first 3 spells, takes 3 wickets at less than 2 per over, in 36deg heat on what seems an ideal batsmen’s first innings wicket.

And someone still wants to have a go.
Yeah it's unbelievable that people are trying to take shots at Archer when he's really the main reason that England are still in the series today (other than poor decisions from our batters).

I've read some commentary of him looking miserable in the field towards the end of days as well, which isn't great, but also have the same people making such comments not been seeing Starc at the end of days when we've been in the field? No criticism of Starc either, he has every right to appear exhausted and sore.

I think we could get a lot of uneven bounce as the match wears on. Bowling straight and setting straight fields will make scoring very difficult. It's hard to know what to make of Australia's score, but it feels like an opportunity missed right now. I still think, however, that 350 could be a really good score if we bowl well, which England, Archer apart, failed to do.

I’m a curator (albeit an amateur one - actually just home from rolling one for a T20 tomorrow evening)

Just in relation to what you’ve posted above, Damian Hough is the Guru of curating in this country and has more data and gadgets to measure moisture than anyone in the country. So while what you’ve said may apply to one of my pitches as I don’t have anything other than my eye, I doubt it’s accurate here. I heard him say he was very happy with were everything was at only yesterday and all his data was consistent with recent years.

I have lived in Adelaide all my life and you think today was hot??
The next 5 days in my neck of the woods (western Sydney) are forecast to be 38, 41, 36, 39 & 36.

Happy days.

nice to see you supporting cam for his 2nd innings this test

I am sure you will supporting him to go well
In fairness mate, I think all Australians are dying to see it click for Green and are just frustrated that it hasn't.

I don't think it's unfair to want to see him dropped for Webster.

For some strange reason i have a feeling in my water that Duckett will make runs.
This sort of wicket on this sort of ground suits him.
Hopefully I’m wrong.

Apologies if posted earlier, but if Shield first innings scores at Adelaide Oval this season are anything to go by then we are right in the game:

SA: 9/350 dec
Vic: 9/343 dec

SA: 228
QLD: 398

SA: 333
WA: 188

SA: 426
TAS: 195

I honestly don't know how this pitch compares to the four above, but the Brisbane test followed a very similar pattern to the recent D/N Shield game played on that ground.

For the last 120 years batsmen have ‘relaxed’ upon making a century. Few regularly go on and pass 150.

As with footballers, when you are fatigued you make mental errors.

I want Australia to do well, I have supported him for years. I currently don’t think he is in the best 11. Nothing more

We have most relaxing before 100 though

So Carey was out and the snicko operator conveniently chose the wrong stump mic, hence the mismatched audio…

It sounded out at the time and most of the commentators and players thought it was out too, Carey got a lucky break there.

Wow a record crowd for a days test cricket,in Adelaide.Over 56,000 for day 1.
Entertaining days cricket. Both sides have to bat. Before we can access the wicket.
Just get the feeling .England might have their nose in front.

Agree - Neser with Carey up bowling grunt overs would've been a great way to build pressure on this track. The Poms weren't disciplined enough - Carse and Stokes bowled it everywhere - failed to build any pressure. Tongue bowled some good gas but was also loose. Suspect Lyon will be a real handful and the Poms will get themselves out to the seamers.
