I absolutely loved The Lobster, but a bunch of my friends didn't enjoy it at all. I think you've probably gotta give another of his movies a chance before you rule him out completely.

Agree 100% though, its the netflix-ification of docos, high production value but find theres not much substance to them.

Type casting has under and overvalued actors particularly in the Marvel Franchise

Chris Evans - Hyped the **** out of with Marvel, gave him one of the biggest and crucial roles, yet outside Marvel he's a mediocre talent
Scarlet Johansson - Continually given shitty low value roles and yet is an exceptional talent
Chris Pratt - Continually lands big roles which I can't understand how, and really is just a mediocre talent.
Jeremy Renner - given a soft blend in role with Marvel and yet like Johansson is incredibly talented. Although I didn't rate The Town highly, he was exceptional in that movie.
Daniel Radcliffe, criminally underrated but unrecognized for his better work.
Adam Sandler, his most popular films are his ridiculous comedies and yet his talent runs so much deeper than what we generally see. The same thing happened with Jim Carrey.

I could think of more but it's sad to see talent wasted and then see people get free rides.

I've recently been rewatching some episodes of the classic UK sitcom 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em' from the 1970s and have noticed something I mostly overlooked in quite a number of episodes.

While Frank Spencer is an annoying, blithering idiot (although very well and skillfully portrayed by Michael Crawford), would test anyone's patience beyond breaking point and sometimes is solely responsible for the chaos that ensues (the first episode the Job Interview a good example of this), on a number of other occasions there is already a problem and Frank's presence only makes things worse. Some examples:

George's House - The gadgets in Betty's brother's George's futuristic house really have not been properly tested by George and his boss before showing them to American investors. Betty herself experiences problems getting the toilet door to stay closed while she is in there, before her husband's mishaps cause one incident after another resulting in extensive damage to the house and its electrics.

The Hotel - In this amusing episode Frank's antics while staying in a small seaside hotel cause a nervous gay guest in the opposite room to freak out believing the place to be haunted and angering the hotel's humorless manager Mr. Bedford. However the hotel is in an extremely poor state of repair even before Frank and Betty arrive, with torn linoleum covering dangerously rotten floorboards.

The Hospital - In this episode a hospital doctor is furious at a neglectful husband who fails to visit his severely depressed wife, only he mistakes Frank Spencer for the uncaring husband and gives him a dressing down, saying that he should take his wife home. Unfortunately while the depressed wife is able to leave, Betty is nowhere near fit enough to do so yet.

The Labour Exchange - While the early 1970s computer and the huge tape spools used to store data would confound young people today, the tape spools themselves are not kept in order nor secured properly, left lying out on tables in the computer room. Even if Frank Spencer had never worked at the Labour Exchange, an audit or inspection by Head Office would not have been pleased by the poor data storage practices.

The Public Relations Course - While Frank drives the course manager Mr. Watson insane, Watson himself is an arrogant and inflexible man, and even if Frank was not at the course it is doubtful it would have gone well anyway considering Watson had little tolerance for the rest of the participants either, most of whom are left-wing university students, and one interestingly played by a young and then unknown Christopher Biggins.

Moving House - This is as to be expected a complete disaster, but one of the main reasons the moving van crashes is that it is following Betty, who is driving way too fast and who should probably shoulder more of the blame for the debacle than Frank himself.

What do you mean about Johansson? other than what I think you mean. I think in The Prestige she was unbelievable with one of the most poignant scenes in the whole movie.

Evans showed plenty prior to marvel, check out Puncture and Snow Piercer and even Nor Another Teen Movie. If anything playing Cap (and playing him remarkably well) stifled his development and then he made ****ing terrible choices with only a handful of exceptions (Red Sea diving resort, knives out). I love Evans and he’s talented but he’s made some absolute ****ing garbage outside the MCU and it’s not typecasting nor is it overvaluing him.

Johansson is an A grade movie star and she’s been given plenty of roles to compliment that. She just got made the lead of another Jurassic Park reboot for $20m bucks, she regularly does Wes Anderson and Woody Allen films (neither are really my taste but the “matter” she led marriage story and jojo rabbit. Again she’s not undervalued or type cast at all, she’s a proper star who can choose her own vehicles and some are money driven and some are creatively driven but it’s all her choice.

I hate Pratt but he has a unique blend of comedy and leading man chops that make him pretty interchangeable, he also seems to know his range and sticks to it pretty firmly, he’s never taken a big dramatic swing he does mostly comedies and action and he’s bankable. Again he’s not typecast he’s choosing to stay in a lane.

Renner has a stack of reasons why he’s doing what he’s doing but the two main ones are he’s done television which takes time (mayor of Kingstown and Hawkeye which again, his choice) and his accident. He’s very talented and has been great in a lot but again, his choice.

Radcliffe might be the only one typecast but he’s also worked really hard to break that and is now a pretty well respected actor, I’d argue the only reason he copped the typecasting was because he was a child actor and they’ve rarely translated into adult success.

Carrey practically retired now and it’s overstated to say his dramatic stuff has been successful. Man in the moon was critically loved but audiences didn’t (he also went complete dickhead method and was hated for it) he’s also done stuff like the number 23 which was terrible. Put it this way, he’s semi retired and he’s choosing to basically just make sonic the hedgehog movies now.

Sandler’s the same, he went back to making comedies after a handful of serious roles and has really just don’t uncut gems recently. He’s publicly stated he likes doing the comedies with his mates in nice locations.

Hahahaha maybe a little. I don’t think the typecasting thing happens all that much anymore, to me it’s more like Noel Gugliemi getting cast as Mexican gangster Hector in everything that ever had a Mexican gangster.

More broadly it’s probably more like McCoughnahey just doing rom coms for however long.

Pratts probably the only one you could argue gets type cast in that group but even that is more a choice he’s making based on what he’s good at (and likely enjoys). The rest are either victims of terrible choices (Evans) desire to make money and enjoy themselves (Sandler) or doing a lot more arthouse 2nd tier stuff (Radcliffe).

I think the Marvel link to it all is pretty difficult to make, most of the marvel guys just didn’t make much other stuff for 10-11 years because they were doing marvel stuff. Radcliffe did Harry Potter for however long too.

Ill start it off with one that most have heard me discuss before.

Shutter Island is ****ing terrible.

Telegraphed plot twist, ham fisted reveal, scholcky writing and delivery. It feels like a shitty 70s telemovie that just happened to have Kingsley, DiCaprio and Ruffalo (as well as a stack of others in support roles) directed by Scorsese. Even the ridiculous last line felt forced.


For clarity on this its hot takes so shit like "Casablanca is great" isnt what were here for. Real shit movies you love or really universally appreciated movies you hate. Award winning actors you think are bad. Critically acclaimed TV you hate. Etc etc.

Pulp Fiction is nowhere near the greatest movies of all time, I dont hate but I do not get the love at all.

Forrest Gump is trash and Tom Hanks movies arent that great either, with the exception of Big and the first 28 mins of Saving Private Ryan.
