Laughing at the premise of this thread.

Both sides weighed down by the hubris of former glories earned when the competition wasn’t professional.
Both will probably win their next premiership before the Eagles do.;)

The competition is professional now? 🤣 If you say so. I think it's one of the least professional and most corrupt competitions going around.

Essendon. Were going alright at 6-4 before all those injuries hit.

Carlton don't even know they need to rebuild soon.
I actually think there's some good young talent on the list and we recruited well in the off season i think. We managed to free up a nice bit of salary cap space by offloading people like Curnow, Silvagni and De Koning as well.

I just think Carlton aren't in as bad shape as some of the naysayers think we are. I think we might suprise more than a couple of people this year all going well hopefully.

Wouldn’t surprise if you do a Richmond 2016 to 2017 this year.

Win the lot when you least expect it.

AFL is doing pretty well in Queensland as growth across the state has been explosive they must be doing something right.

You'd hope so with Brisbane's current success. That's not the case in Victoria. Kids in schools prefer playing soccer if they're playing sport at all.

Carlton are closer to a flag but heading south, Essendon are further away but look like jumping ahead albeit 18 months away at the earliest.
The Sheedy/Hird plants at the Hangar/Windy Hill, will probably cause things to deviate off course as they usually seem to do.

I think the Essington era at Essendon is still very much alive and well.:laughv1:

I think both are miles from a flag. We have lost a bunch of senior players and probably already peaked in 2023 losing the prelim to Brisbane. Most pundits have us finishing bottom 8 next year, though anything can happen. Personally I think Voss is an outdated coach.

Bombers have a lot of youngsters and have reset. I do think that elusive finals win will come in the next few years, but like the Blues I'm not sure being in 'the window' is enough for Essendon to win a flag. Better coach than us though.

Agreed, the top end talent at Carlton is much more evident than at Essendon. Imagine Harry takes control inside 50 without the distraction of Charlie, Cripps returns to somewhere near his best and Jagga is every bit as good as his billing. Three very real questions that will help Carlton.

Have always said that the depth falls away quickly at Carlton, think this will continue to be the case.

Pretty accurate take
If you accept Essendon are ahead of Carlton in the rebuild phase, then to answer the OP you'd probably have to rate Essendons chances higher although its somewhat academic

Yeah will be interesting. I'd argue we have improved our depth substantially while losing our starpower.

Curnow, TDK are big losses to our Top 10 players.

But Ainsworth, Hayward, Florent drastically improve our bottom 6.

Almost throw in Chesser and E Hollands as well

Who is closer?
A couple of years ago, I would have said Carlton, now I have NFI.

All I know is I may have only 10 or 15 years left in me, so unfortunately I will never know if I was right.

genuinely forgot you picked up the shinier version of Jade Gresham. Hayward and Florent were astute buys, who is the Blues distributor because that is the one area i see as an Achilles heal

Definitely was that way until this last off season, side was top heavy

List is much more balanced now, some vey encouraging signs seen during practise match v lions

This just means your team sucks and you lost your best players if you think about it
