A TEENAGE apprentice electrician from the tiny village of Rathvilly in County Carlow is Ireland's answer to AFL superstar Chris Judd, according to fellow countryman Tadhg Kennelly.

It's a huge rap for Brendan Murphy, who is rated the most talented young Gaelic footballer in Ireland, but Kennelly believes the lanky 18-year-old is going to be the real deal once he makes the transition to AFL.
"He (Murphy) is big, big news," Kennelly said.
"He wouldn't be quite the hype of Chris Judd at 18 years old but not far, far off.

Murphy, a 195cm tall, super athletic midfielder for Carlow stood out in this year's Gaelic football finals because of his phenomenal skills.

We will need an Irish replacement once Tadhg leaves. He said 2009 will be his last year. I truley hope the club can convince him to since another 2 or 3 year deal. He is so important to us. He sete us up maginificantly from defence. Was sorely missed this year.

Hopefully the arrival of Brendan (and others over the years) will add some flavour to Tadhg's leadership role at the club and encourage him to stay on and assist with the development of Irish players - but having Tiger as a former Premiership Player, blessed with local knowledge and with a few grandiose stories to tell of his adventures Downunder, as an Irish Based Recruiter doesn't sound too bad from a SSFC standpoint either.

I think we have done quite well so far in regards to the draft. It will be interesting to see who the Swans pick up for pick 11 in the national draft as it is the highest pick we have had in many years.

Spurred by the instant success of Gaelic convert Martin Clarke at Collingwood, other clubs are also circling.

County Meath stars Shane O'Rourke and Kevin Reilly and Laois full-forward Conor Meredith have also attracted attention. County boards in Ireland are becoming increasingly restless about the threat of losing their best talent. Poaching is likely to become the hottest issue when the GAA and AFL meet in October - overtaking the future of the International Rules Series.

GAA secretary of County Carlow Tommy O'Neill last night said it would be "heart-wrenching" if Murphy was lured to the AFL.
Murphy, a 194cm 18-year-old, is considered the most exciting young talent in Ireland. His loss would be a huge blow to the minnow county, which has a population of only 35,000.

"He's very good. He was in the Leinster final for us over here a couple of weeks ago and he was best player on the field by a mile," O'Neill. "He's very slight, but full of skill - left foot and right foot.
"It's one of the downsides over here of guys being so good that they're being looked at. It is heart-wrenching here, because we're small."
Lions football manager Graeme Allan and recruiting manager Craig Brittain recently returned from a talent-spotting trip to Ireland and Murphy is the No. 1 priority.

Onto our newest arrival, he looked good getting off the plane, big wraps on him, if he can turn out like Clarke did this year, then we have a gooden.. good size about him, a couple of pre seasons into him and we got a nice spine starting to appear. White, Grundy, Currie, Murphy, The Queenslander, Pick 11 (kpp prospect please)..

From what I have heard, he is taller than Goodes but is quicker over 20 meters and the 3km time trial.

If he can learn how to use an oval ball he is going to be a player you can build a club around, especially if he chooses to play forward.

The team Carlow lost to in the Leinster final (Laois) had at least 4 players I would pick ahead of him if I had the choice. The 4 I am talking about have already been approached and at least one is heading to Oz next year (to Carlton). Think the other 3 turned the recruiters down (or postponed making any decision). Don't get me wrong, Murphys a very good player but it is seriously stretching things to say he was the best player in his age group in the country.

Oh it absolutley sucks for the "minnows" like it's one thing when we (ie..Cork) loose Shields and O hAilpin we'll get over that, we have gotten over Seanty like. But Seanty may have been a jewel in a crown for Cork, but we've plenty more where that came from. Carlow don't. Like Clarke he was supposed to be their future, and as we can see now, it hasn't gone to plan. The clubs and counties, (come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen Carlow play a match and I love GAA) most feel hard done by, especially the clubs, all that time and effort for nothing. Ah well, good luck to him.

Even if he's not THE top young prospect in Ireland, I'm more than happy to have him over as a rookie.

In fact I think we should try grab a young Irish player every single year, even if only 1 of 3 works out, it would still be great for us (since it's only a rookie list player). If it doesn't work out, than the young Irish player heads back to Ireland after spending a year training in a professional setup and pocketing 30 grand or so.

I'm happy to accept Tadhg may have overstated Murphy's case just a tad.

However would the other players you have identified be 194 cm (6ft 4 1/2in)?

It is interesting that Kennelly (190cm). O'Mahony (who we brought out for the 2003 season - 194cm ) and now Murphy (194cm) are with the exception of the O'Hailpins (both @200cm), IIRC the tallest players brought out here.

And the O'Hailpins, as I understand it, have primarily a hurling rather than football background.

It would appear that Sydney have a policy of recruiting talls from Ireland, perhaps on the basis that their athleticism & height is harder to find downunder, whereas a player similar to Marty Clarke is easier to find.

Well there's a guy called Donal Kingston that plays for Laois and he is near enough the same height as Murphy but I'd say he's about 10kg heavier. He wouldn't be as fast as Murphy though but he is extremely accurate in front of the posts and has great hands too. He's tailor made for CHF. The scary thing is that he has another year left at u-18 level! There is another guy playing for Laois, John O'Loughlin is his name, and he is strong as an ox and a natural leader. He also plays hurling too so he's a bit nuts. I've no doubt either of those guys would be physically ready for the AFL after a good pre-season. But as far as I know, both have been approached and both have said no thanks.

The Swans need another O'Loughlin as our current one will be retiring in afew years.
