I’d agree. Weak year f’sure.

West Coast had it tougher

Nathan Ablett, Shannon Byrnes (Twice), Steven King, Mark Blake, Trent West, James Podsiadly...right place, right time...
Must take you up on shannon (shagger) byrnes.
Sure 2007 bit player but his last qtr.2009 GF remains unsung. Was very important

Felt conflicted seeing Deledio's despair when the final siren went in the PF against GWS, pulled us through a decade of dark years and the year after he leaves we go on to win the big one

Would be similar for Franklin with the Swans, and also Luke Ball but the other way around

Who would you rate as hawks luckiest in 2013-15?
Some might see the name Max Bailey in our 2013 team and think he was lucky to be there. And yes, it was his final match and a fairytale ending to his AFL career. But only after his potential had been cruelled by several knee reconstructions. Lucky - maybe, Hard-earned - undoubtedly.

I agree, i've been a bit harsh on Byrnes. He was in the best GF players in 2009, but overall he may very well have been the 21st or 22nd player picked in those teams from 2007-09. Full kudos for his performnce in 2009 and for that he can hold his head up high for the rest of his days!

Jonathan Simpkin - Brendan Whitecross will always be the heartbreak when it comes to missing grand finals

Every side needs a reliable role player which Simpkin was.

Who was the unlucky guy he replaced?
Had been 2 months since he last played a senior game and 4 months since he played a good game, only bought into the team due to Whitecross doing his ACL again and then only got the tick over Jed Anderson due to his mature body. I'd say he was pretty damn lucky.

Tyson Goldsack’s Mum, who collected on him kicking first goal in the replay Grand Final.

Peyton Manning in Super Bowl 50. One of the greatest QB's of all time, almost entirely carried by the Bronco's defence in his final year, a shadow if his former self.
By the same token he carried a lot of shit teams and got unlucky that he didn't have more postseason success

Not to mention that team wouldn't be near the team it was without him being the attraction and leader he was for the previous 3 seasons

70% of any premiership team is lucky and can be replaced by others of similar standard

Silly statement, if 16 of the best 22 players in a side were unavailable that side would be lucky to keep it within 60 points by the final siren.

You didn't read my comment properly ..70% can be replaced by others of equal standard

I read it properly.

The worst 16 players in a best 22 would be replaced by 16 players deemed not good enough for the 22. Think about it. Sure, the gap between Chris Masten and Brendan Ah Chee in our side may not be huge but multiply it 16 times and you have a crisis. If your side has four or five out of your best 22 nowadays it's deemed an injury-plagued side.

You could replace the worst 16 of Eagles GF side with the worst 16 of Pies losing GF team and the Eagles could still win the GF
