Lucky to be a Premiership Player

Fletcher Roberts has barely played at all for the dogs before or after 2016 and wasn’t initially in our 2016 finals side but got back in after Matt suckling was injured.

Went on to smash Jeremy Cameron and Kurt Tippett in consecutive weeks. Then return to occasional AFL footballer after that.

Suckling was touch and go, could have easily played the grand final. But Roberts has a premiership medal and the respect of an entire bulldogs supporter group.

Has to be Leon Davis. AFAIK the only player to have been awarded a premiership medal that didn’t actually play in a premiership winning team.

At least the other dud players were on the ground on the day.

Tyson Goldsack

Pies draw he never gets a flag

Funny story after the game the players left as the rooms were flooded, Maxwell was one of the last to leave and could hear laughing pulled open a curtain to see Goldsack and Lockyer both on exercise bikes busting a nut.

Nick Maxwell is the luckiest Premiership captain Ive seen.

Plus I would add Barry Hall to that list given what he did in the preliminary final.

Contrary to popular belief, Maxwell was a very serviceable defender from 2009-2012 and an inspirational general down back. He was every bit deserving of his crown in 2010 as not only player but captain.

That's just strange, isn't it.
It may look that way!! I was rather puzzled a few years back when I noticed that Davis' name didn't appear on the list of Every Premiership Player in the AFL Record Season Guide, as I assumed that because he had been given the medal that the AFL must class him as a premiership player. I got in touch with the AFL (history/statistics dept.) to query this, and it was confirmed that he was not classed as a premiership player. Here's how the relevant part of that section looks in the most recent version of the Season Guide, so nothing has changed there:

I see his Wikipedia page says in his career highlights section "AFL Premiership Player 2010", but that should be removed.

So one wonders why the AFL saw fit to award him a medal. It just doesn't make sense. The only non-premiership player in history to be awarded a premiership medal.

In B4 somebody jumps in with Bob Murphy.

Three Melbourne players were awarded premiership medals for 1941, though none of them played a game that year (due to war service). They are not officially classed as 1941 premiership players:

The VFL awarded premiership medals posthumously to Truscott, Ron Barassi Snr and Harold Ball, as it was considered that they would have certainly played in the 1941 Grand Final.

Edit: While the above article says the medals were awarded posthumously to the Melbourne trio, that is not correct in the case of Keith Truscott:

Kinda related ..... but one bloke often unfairly maligned as being 'lucky' to play in a premiership, but certainly not was Tigers' 80 flag skipper Bruce Monteath.
The fact he played all of about five minutes and had two possessions for the game is what a lot of people sadly remember him for, but he was actually a gun.
Kicked 43 goals that season but was sadly was a shadow of his former self by round 22 when cut down by injuries. The way he is viewed is also exacerbated by the fact he never played for the club again.
But 198 goals in 118 games and an All-Australian gig in '79 tells you he was a pretty dran good player. Pity he is often remembered simply as the captain who spent nearly a whole game on the bench in a grand final team.

Just looking back on the Eagles Premiership team and we all know there were 3 players missing who would have been pretty much walk up starters, NicNat, Sheppard and Gaff.
Of these 3 you would say Shep was probably the most unlucky given the timing of his injury.
His replacement, Schofield, would have probably not have got a game otherwise meaning he was "lucky" to win a Premiership.

I am in no way saying he did't deserve his medal, he was probably up there in our best players to be honest. But if Sheppard wasn't injured then Will Schofield probably wouldn't have a Premiership medal.

There are plenty of stories of guy's missing out on a Premiership, the unlucky ones, but what about the lucky ones.

It could be through injury, it could be through need of a positional player who wasn't that great but just filled a need at the right club at the right time.

Interested to see how many "Oh yeah forgot about him" we can see through every ones past knowledge of their teams success.

Eagles '18 are right up there in the list of Premiership sides missing key players: AFL and VFL

Michael Tuck? he had a certain amount of Luck.

Greg Madigan. Lets just say there was spirited competition for the spot in '89 when Peter Schwab was suspended

For a bloke who is a good runner and a technically very good kick of the ball he has no awareness and regularly turns the ball over. Plus he has shit tatts, a shit haircut and his shorts are too big.

Masten - Good runner in 2km time trails.

But pretty much a one way jogger in games, as he trails behind the oppo/team mates as they stream past him.

Certainty a premiership contender (or maybe Oscar) for coming to bench, crossing the line and then throwing his head back, letting go with a couple of F###s and then going down on his haunches.

10/10 for the full on "I've run myself into the ground" performance!

Jesus christ your side won a flag in god knows how long just a year ago and you're still this insecure.

Some Richmond supporters here need help.

This very thread was started by an Eagles supporter that acknowledged Will Schofield got lucky. There's been barely any 'eagles are so awesummmm luv us chris masten is a legendddd' threads on BigFooty, unlike last year.

Like I said, you and some of your fellow Tiges supporters should seek help.
