On the draft vid they offered the same deal to us as the crows. It would have been pick 15 (which became 18 or something) Duursma and our next years first for their next years first. I suppose it depends on where we finish (next/this) year, but Carlton's first is looking juicy.

Must rate Duursma and/or don't think our pick next year will be that high and cartons might not be that low.

So you people are now saying we should have traded 2 first round picks for 1 with carlton?

Given that we're no guarantee of finishing any higher than them next year it could have potentially had us in the running for the stupidist trade in recent memory

I'm not fussed either way. Given that we traded so much to get pick 5 (rozee) in the draft, it would have been consistent with this years trading to trade pick 18 and next years pick for a 'guaranteed' top 5 pick next year. If we finish lower than carlton then we truly suck beyond belief.

It's an unanalysable trade ahead of time. As far as Port and the Crows go if our 1st 2 picks turn out duds and Carlton wooden spoon again and the Crows get a good player with next year's #1 then fair play to them. In a sense it's "Pay-packet on red thanks croupier". But honestly if you've got a good list and the spreadsheet is showing salary cap issues then there's a logic to what the Crows did.

The crows regularly molest carlton in trading (except for the Gibbs trade) so even if they lose on this one they're still going to be in front.
I can see why it wasn't the deal of the century for us though, given the uncertainty about which way we're headed next year

Already talk of Rankine being homesick lol
In a surprise to absolutely nobody lol. I know his contract would be for the standard 2 years, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Crows have a crack at the end of the year if that first round pick from Carlton ends up being early enough.

Pretty sure that’s the plan but really what is the point of another first rounder for GCS?

If GCS play hard ball and he had to go into the draft yet Crows had fisrt pick. Interesting times.
Wonder if the AFL would say enough is enough and intervene somehow.

If its next year he cant go to the draft. 2 year contract.

Ah good..he would have to wait out a year and both clubs would have a chance to woo him.

Our biggest chance to usurp the Crows re Rankine was during last year's trade period. We're now in the position where if he wants to come home at some stage, we're competing with the Crows, which is probably not going to end that well for us.

Why?

Whoever wants him will have to pay up. We just have to offer more than they do.

Because in a trade he has the ability to nominate a club, being a crows supporter that puts them in a stronger position to start with as we’d have to convince him to nominate us.

I believe he was a part of our academy, so as long as we preform on field convoncing him to nominate us may not be as hard a prospect as one may think. I’ve heard more then once that he is related to Gav, no sure if this is true, but if it is and Gav gets on the board and Tex is going to be a FS selection we may actually be in a reasonably strong position.

Secondly in a trade the crows are automatically in a stronger position as they hold Cartons first pick which I assume would be in the table.
