I dont think these rookie picks should go on guys who are like for like to Tom Mitchell. We have Cousins, whilst hes not anywhere near Mitchell, he is better than any state league candidate to fill that role in 2019.

Get guys that have a chance to build an AFL career. Ned Reeves sounds like the perfect pickup with this pick.

Whilst I tend to agree with you, I am also aware that players such as Kelly, Barlow and even Poppy carved out successful AFL caareers after being drafted from a state league. Further, many players do not start producing immediately and need several years. We are happy to think this of KPs, but even mids can take time. Sammy, Sewell are close examples. There is only a fraction of luck between getting rookie-listed and missing out altogether. AS I recall, even GAJ took a few years to really become the elite mid that he is. I am certain there is a mid or two running around the lesser leagues with an abundance of talent. If the club can identify one, then go for it.

I'm all for adding a talented player. But would rather go on talent than an accumulator who had a good 2018 and got overlooked by all 18 clubs.

Simple get Langford back.

If you go back to the 2014 finals, Langford was elite as the inside mid, feeding the ball out to Smith and Hill.

In the preliminary final against Port he was instrumental, going to Boak who at that time was best afield, he didn’t tag him, he just beat him in the contested ball and turned the game.

He’s never really been given the opportunity to play that role since, more a tagger in the middle or on the forward flank.

I say get him back, bring the maniac pressure like he once did and watch him feed it out to O’Meara, Wingard, Scully and co.

Anyone who wears the Brown and Gold has my love but Langers as a mid again is like giving the ball back every time he gets it.

Our game plan just doesn't allow for poor disposal and the subsequent rebound from 50 or the centre. I don't have any particular stat to back it up but we seemed protect our defenders much better this year against the rebound than in the past and I'm sure not giving it away readily was a large part of it.

All I’m going to say is go watch the game, I agree with you his disposal is poor and he’s a liability on the outside, but that’s not what Im talking about, he has the ability to win the contested ball and get it out to those who are good by foot, when playing inside mid.

He knows the players and knows the game plan, I see him as the solution in the short term.

Problem with Langers is partially answered in your own post.
His disposal is so poor, he's no good at 'getting it out to those who are good by foot..". If he'd been able to develop a quality handball he might have been a significantly different player even minus a kicking boot.

His other primary deficiency is he just doesn't have a nose for the footy. Doesn't know where to run, can't read it at the fall, doesn't instinctively get to it first in a pile....he's just a mile off it as an inside, outside, or any other kind of mid.
Not sure what you're hanging on to.

or we have got better options to persist with, than some kid with deficiencies, that doesnt have the tank for regular AFL footy ?

Could our reluctance to fill the void be due to salary cap flexibility? if we are paying 95% of the cap this year we have more next year to use on a FA.

Any movement on Hawthorn grabbing someone to replace Tom Mitchell?
Don't think the Club is in a rush to add that player right now.

Give one of the younger guys a crack early in the year and re-assess mid year at the mid-season draft.

No need to rush it, there aren't many other clubs looking for players like us yet.

We can nab a new dude right up until mid-season, right?

If that's the case then I doubt we'll grab anyone until mid-season. Our needs (or wants) may well have changed by then & we may well be looking torward 2020 by then.

Agree, although others will argue it's better to get them into our system earlier

Depends.

Mitchell is irreplaceable by another single player, especially (with respect) by some dude from the State Leagues.

So why bother dragging in a mid that (again, with respect) is going to overwhelmingly fail/disappoint.

Instead of worrying about what we've lost, we may as well worry about how we're going to get to where we want to be.

If we're confident that Tom Mitchell will return 100% (even in 2020); &, let's say we're pretty confident in landing another mid via FA in the next off-season, then I reckon we're better off looking torward 2020, not trying to replace the irreplaceable (with a much lesser player).

We all know Tom Mitchell is irreplaceable in terms of non-afl players (and barely AFL players).
I thought I’d highlight a guy who the Hawks have likely looked at and seems like the type who would thrive on an AFL list.

Marcus Lentini

Following is the info I could find on the net (unfortunately no vision: can anyone else find some?)

Plays for: Coburg (VFL)
DOB: 05/06/1999 (Age: 19)
Height: 184 cm
Weight: 77 kg
2018 Games: 18
2018 Goals: 8

2017: Very productive as an outside mid really coming on late last year but not as high impact per possession.

2018: highly productive as an inside mid.
Equal winner of Coburg’s best and fairest and named on the bench of the VFL team of the year (behind Michael Gibbons(23yrs), Tom Atkins (22yrs; drafted) & Tom Gribble(24yrs) in the centre)
Marcus Lentini- Coburg: 18 matches, 28.3 disposals (14 contested), 7 loose ball gets, 6.8 clearances, 5.9 tackles, 4 inside 50s. He recorded 30+ disposals performances on nine different occasions including a career-high 41 in round 20.

Best performances of 2018: Had 10 clearances against Collingwood VFL and 9 clearances against Richmond VFL. Coburg’s BOG in both games.

June 27, 2018: The Stats Smashers (top stats in the VFL to that point of the season).
DISPOSAL DEMON: Marcus Lentini (Coburg) – 301 disposals in 11 games (27.4 per game)
HAPPY HANDBALLER: Marcus Lentini (Coburg) – 159 handballs in 11 games (14.5 per game)
CONTESTED POSSESSION PIG: Marcus Lentini (Coburg) – 155 contested possessions in 11 games (14.1 per game)

Knightmare had Lentini at 49 in his 2018 Power Ranking though rightly predicted he would not taken in the national draft.

A Knightmare’s 2017 comment: Lentini displayed run and dare, also taking a couple of intercept marks behind the ball, one of which was a courageous mark flying backwards with the flight of the ball.
2017 Comments by an un-named AFL central author: “Played the role he’s been so consistent at all year for the Knights – mopping up between midfield and half back and setting up attacks with penetrating kicks. Showed good improvement in his decision making and short kicking accuracy too, while doing all the hard stuff that coaches love. Has the valuable quality of being able to play well in both wet and dry conditions.”

Knocks: may lack hurt factor.

I can see him being paired with Harrison Jones at Box Hill splitting time between half back and the centre as development / competing partners. At the very least we would get the best out of one, though hopefully both of them.

Something I am not clear on is whether the injured player, who is replaced by a rookie, MUST be out for the season.
Recent pictures of Tom suggest a return in 2019 is not out of the question: though I highly doubt it given Hawthorn’s care for their players.
Clubs cannot have extra players once an injured player is ready to go. And it would be massively unfair to a rookie to be booted out of a club toward the end of the season when an injured player has sufficiently recovered.

It must be that once a rookie is brought in, the injured player is ruled out for the season.

That said, the Hawks have the “benefit” (that was difficult to write) of a retired player and an injured player.
We can Rookie one before the 15th of March, then wait until mid-season to rookie or not, a second player, depending on Mitchell’s recovery.

Damn we live in complicated times.

I thought it was like the old rookie situation... you can promote and demote them to replace an injured player.
