Van Onslen saying Julie to retire this week.

Its been the hot topic over here that shes been trying to find a women candidate left right and centre to replace her.

However in Keenan's seat theres also a push to get women to run as well.

which has led to non member (females) attempting to join to run for preselection..

There are plenty of female candidates putting their hand up for both seats you can count on that. Liberal party will never allow a non/new member to contest as it needs to go through about 3 levels of councils to get approval. Not going to happen.

Bishop's candidate is Erin Watson-Lynn i can only assume she has brokered a deal to get her in.

Porter does not have the numbers for anything even his own seat. He would only get the nod if the other candidates were shite and Cormann went into bat for him like he did in Pearce (where he also had no numbers at all).
And then he's relying on Cormann to get the numbers right.

its possible but wouldn't be a sure thing as Curtin is such a large division it is much harder to "work the numbers" - which is why Porter probably isn't interested. Porter has a gigantic ego (like his mate Cormann) he wouldn't commit unless its a sure thing.

Will be interesting if they go with Bishop's pick or if they go in another direction, especially if the LNP pick another male. Either way I imagine a slight drop for the LNP in Curtin but nothing of concern.

i can only assume they have given Bishop assurances they will pick a female or why would she resign now.

it was 77% TPP last election they would basically need to preselect hilter not to win the seat. Even then he might get up.

I agree, although with the way the LNP is going at the moment who knows what they will do.

Yeah the slight drop may be to 75%.

Depends on who paid for the fashion and the free tickets to events.
She was always at the GF the Melb Cup and the Polo

Are we assuming that it wasn't her that paid?
Are we therefore deciding between the taxpayer and LNP donor/beneficiary of LNP corruption?

My money is on the taxpayer for the GF/Melbourne Cup and some LNP beneficiary for the polo.

Yep the bitch witch is gone! Will enjoy life on her super unless of course she is offered some embassy job. USA?

Most likely will get a plum role somewhere , she was ****ing annoying GF day on tv , although I have no idea why the cameras kept panning over to her every 5 mins .

I still think Porter will weasel his way into Curtin somehow - or at least die trying. Pearce is toast at the next election and surely a PM in waiting like Porter isn't prepared to go quietly losing Pearce in May.

Julie Bishop might want a woman but since she is departing I doubt the rank and file care too much what she thinks now.

Lost the tilt at being PM, she knew the writing was on the wall that she would never be more than deputy leader of the Liberal Party. Loads of ministers call it quits at a following election when their ambitions look like being unfulfilled.

Scummo in a QT response to this literally said: "What we do know about this issue is this Mr. Speaker - we know that the Labor party has had this in their bottom drawer for some time Mr. Speaker. And if this issue was so important, for so many months, why is it being used as some sort of distracting political tactic here in this chamber to appeal to the good old Canberra bubble..."
"How dare they Mr Speaker, How dare the Labor party play politics with our corruption"

Hmm don't know I missed this, not branch stacking - Administrative Appeals Tribunal stacking.

Retiring Liberal MP Baldwin and Senator Parry appointed to AAT board for 7 years.

The number of cases lodged with the tribunal in 2017-18 increased dramatically, while the number of cases dealt with fell. As a result, the tribunal now faces an enormous backlog of appeals, dating back to 2014. “... the total number of applications we have on hand has grown to exceed 53,000 at 30 June 2018,” the report said.

The crisis centres on one sector covered by the tribunal: immigration. “Approximately four-fifths of this pending caseload are applications in the Migration and Refugee Division,” the report said.

This chaos is in large measure the government’s own doing. Since coming to power five years ago, it has run down the AAT, purged the body of experienced people, abandoned any pretence of merit-based appointment and stacked it with political appointees, including scores of former conservative politicians, failed candidates, former staffers, party members, donors and other mates. Some of them – although not all – lack any relevant experience and are either unwilling or unable to do the job.

The problem is partly due to the sheer number of people applying for visas to Australia. But many current and former senior members of the Migration and Refugee Division of the AAT, who have spoken to The Saturday Paper, attribute the crisis in substantial part to maladministration by the government.

But many current and former senior members of the Migration and Refugee Division of the AAT, who have spoken to The Saturday Paper, attribute the crisis in substantial part to maladministration by the government.

But it didn’t happen. Instead, others, with uncertain expertise, were appointed.

“Many of those appointed dubiously had very significant Coalition connections and, what was really scandalous, some of them were given seven-year appointments,” a former member said.

“There was really big spill of old experienced members and the introduction of people who, in some cases, were not interviewed at all by the panel set up to consider appointments,” says one former AAT member. “More commonly we were recommended to be reappointed but were not, and some who were not recommended got the jobs anyway.”

An example: back in 2015 a member of longstanding with the Migration and Refugee Review Tribunal was up for reappointment to the newly expanded AAT. A three-member selection committee of senior public servants was charged with assessing the person’s record. Their written review – seen by The Saturday Paper – was glowing. The committee concluded the person was “very suitable” and said it would “strongly support” reappointment.

Of course, there is nothing new in political considerations affecting appointments. What made it different this time was the sheer scale of the purge, the perception there was no consideration of competence, and the length of the appointments. Usually, in the past, they had been for three years, which allowed for a member’s performance to be reviewed.

Like judges, members of the AAT can only be removed under exceptional circumstances before their term is up.

Salary $204K to $400K!!!!! Nice for the next 7 years (excluding increases).
