The problem with our best 22 is structuring our backline with Marchbank, Docherty and Williamson out.

I reckon the obvious solution is for McGovern to play down back until Marchbank returns.

With the marking power of Charlie and Harry, we can probably get away with having four smaller options surrounding them.

Lets be realistic here. The ball will probably spend a lot more time in Richmond's front half. Extra reinforcement and intercepting ability down back is probably going to be more valuable to us than a one off pack mark in the goal square.

All this means is we have another resting mid play across half forward. Just seems to be the simplest and most logical option in my eyes.
Not convinced that McGov is a significant upgrade on Jones, Plowman or Weitering down back and would not like to have too many talls against Richmond (who are unlikely to play Lynch) in Round 1. Their smalls are lethal.

Let McGovern play forward IMO.

Thats the exact round 1 team i would have
Gartlett possibly could be in there if he plays well in the next couple practice games

Yeah Garlett is in the conversation for Gibbons spot and Fasolo for Cuningham's spot. Will be interesting to see the changes post JLT.

Time for Matt Owies to make his debut :)

How do you evaluate this team in terms of speed?

Many ways to control the pace of the game, namely hitting targets & taking marks around the ground and up forward as well as intercepting down back. A little bit of overlap run from the defenders & midfielders and speed is not so much of an issue (especially if protecting space when defending).

simpson jones newman

Kreuzer Petrevski-Seton Murphy
Kennedy, E Curnow, Dow, Thomas*

* I wanted to include Gibbons or Setterfield, and I have no doubt both will play early, but Daisy is more important to our structure IMO.

** Garlett plays round one if he has a solid JLT hit out - the richmond smalls are too quick for Daisy/Newman/Plowman

I agree, but not against Richmond.. small forward line would kill us on the ground

If Darcy Lang was right to go, I'd run him across half back.

We just need to find a solution that doesn't hinder the development of our younger midfielders.

Most likely it will be Thomas, Newman and Simpson across half back. We're probably overthinking it.

How do you evaluate this team in terms of speed?
Speed is something that needs defining...broken down into its facets
Decision making
Ball movement
Running

Running is the most important when we don't have the ball.
Decision making and ball movement when we do.

Round 1
SImmo Jones Garlett
Newman Weitering Thomas
Murphy Cripps Sps
Fisher Charlie McGovern
Fasolo McKay Cuninghan
Kreuzer Setterfield Dow

Ed, Walsh, Gibbons, Kennedy (Plowman)

Looks good, but L’OB is in my round 1 squad on a wing. Edging out Gibbons or Garlett. If Doc, Willo and Marchy weren’t injured this would be a tougher exercise.
Walsh starts on a wing as well. So much running power with Walsh and L’OB.

Truly just need the footy to start already. Actually starting to get anxious.

Stop showing off.

Some of these teams don't have Plow on the ground (or named at all). Personally I think he's best 22 even WITH Marchy. Without Marchy Plow is a lock surely?
Need Plow, want Plow, where's Plow?

Lochie does more than just edge out Gibbons & Garlett, he's ahead of them by the length of the Flemington straight.

Firstly, Marchbank is injured. Secondly, you're not picking him ahead of Weiters to play a key post.

Also, no way would I pick Jack & Polson ahead of Kennedy. Setterfield plays if fit, which he appears to be. I'd also have Walsh on a wing (or starting on bench but paying wing) where he can use the space and his running ability and not get constantly smashed by Martin/Cotchin/Lambert/Prestia/etc. He'll cop some attention anyway, no need to accentuate it by putting him square in the firing line, he'll be served better to run the game out and accumulate some touches out wider.

Plow plays 22 if fit no doubt about it.
