I'm not trying to criticize Buzza. It's absolutely possible that the club wants to ease him into the season after a slow preseason. But given they've chosen that option then picking him for round 1 would be crazy and exceptionally harsh on Buzza to throw him into a huge match off only VFL practice matches.

If they didn't seriously consider what happens round 1 if Sav is unavailable they're idiots. And if their solution to that possibility was selecting Buzza off no preseason games they're also idiots. Unlike some around here I don't think our coaching staff are idiots so I think the chances of Buzza playing are zero barring some catastrophe with our forwards.

Id play Henry forward before I pick Buzza but i agree with your points.

I think Scott's words were needing pre-season games at either level? (Or something to that effect)

Similarly to Abbott Buzza has both VFL praccy games and the scratch match under his belt. Not the greatest body of work, but that's why he isn't first up...

First an most obvious. One will not advocate selecting someone unfit for for gameplay. But if Sav is not playing then also requiring a ruck ute ..do we play two rucks , do we play an under sized ruck like Henry and throw him to the wolves( its one thing for an in game situation to happen and another to plan for it) or do we play Buzza ..IF HE IS FIT.

I have concerns he struggles to mark as a forward.. im not sure if this is worse at night time. I wonder if he has issues with glare etc.. but id rather throw him in an let him get the knees and the buffeting in the ruck than as Danger to do it. (which was done at times last year as well)

I reckon the 3 main targets up forward will be Hawkins Rohan and Ablett if Sav misses the game,Buzza would only be in the forward line to try and cause some kaos under the long bomb they won't be using him as a prime target and do minimal ruck work hopefully plus he'd be insurance if Stanley goes down early.I wouldn't expect Buzza to set the world on fire it's more about not having to pull Blits out of FB to fight a losing battle in the ruck.Abbott Fort Buzza flick a coin.

Thats the way I see it. I have not seen Buzza this year..certainly the last game he played in seniors was poor and he showed poor marking hands.. but Id ask just for him to compete , bust packs etc when forward ..and chip in with a goal if he gets a chance. It only takes one pass and mark on the chest to get a shot at goal... but he is mainly there to give a break to Stanley in the ruck.

If Sav is not playing ... we need a ute ruck. So unless we want to play Henry in the ruck...as we did at times last year... we need to replace Sav with someone who can help out.

But Abbott and Fort are both poor fwds and I put Buzza in the same basket. They will just muck up our fwd structure. Let Stanley ruck vs Grundy let Blicavs play back v Cox and follow him into the ruck as well and let either Henderson or Henry and Rohan be the fwd marking targets. Much better than messing up our fwd structure to accomodate rucks who are crap fwds.

No cant agree. Blitz stays down back his intercpt marking is important unless we want to play a tall d again.. which would be signing up for a stodgy backline imo. I would prefer not to mess up our backline structure.

Our forwards are still our forwards. Sav has no real replacement but Buzz is the closest on our list ... which probably says a lot.

If Abbot could play forward at all he would be a better option but from what I have seen he is very much a ruck man who can find himself on the end of it near goals occasionally.

If Buzza is our best replacement we are in trouble his marking is awful and he rucks poorly its Spencer and Matt McCarthy all over again.

I get your point re Blitz although I think its the best of a bad lot of options this week. We have the KPDs to cover.

We will want to play 1 ruck all year as Stanley is a crap fwd which means the load of being KPF and backup ruck all year will be big on Sav. Really one of Henderson Taylor or Henry needs to play fwd at times to give Sav a break so we dont burn him out. I dont like any of those options but they are far better than Buzza or Abbott (good ruck poor fwd) and thats where we are IMO.

We are in trouble.

The over riding hope for our improvement and this season rests on a fit Sav. Take him out its just another season of a F50 Whacky Races where we dont know it will be The Gruesome Twosome or The Ant Hill Mob in the forwardline.

I dont see Blitz role as negotiable. He is at his age , coming off the B&F..must be planned as our FB. In game injuries ..things happen. If we plan to move our B&F away from his role ..first game of the year... the we are in trouble. Henderson and Taylor is not sustainable.

I expect almost zero from resting rucks bar them to compete. Abbot might be able to do it but Buzza is better in my mind.

Basically this discussion show how thin we are for tall forward talent. Imagine multiple weeks without Hawkins. Id say the Smith replacement at years end must be ruck and forward capable. No idea who that would be.

That paints a sobering picture.

You're making it up Abbott's a poor fwd.
When fwd he's quite capable even at AFL level.
Just no foundation to your argument anyhow whatever.

Taylor will pllay CHB, Henderson will play FB and the mighty Blitz will play CHF if Sav misses, Its what Blitz does, and we are lucky to have the best utility in the game in our team

GEELONG ruckman Ryan Abbott says he will be “ready to go” at the MCG on Friday night if he earns a spot in Chris Scott’s Round 1 side to take on Collingwood.
Abbott has shot into contention for the season-opener after two strong outings in the VFL and has seemingly leapfrogged Darcy Fort as the preferred back-up to Rhys Stanley.

It would seem Abbot thinks he is right to go...

I like your thinking but Scott won't do it he'll play Harry forward like always despite the fact he's (still) our best Key Back.

6 Brownlow vote for his career never 3 and two BF,that would also be a first.I don't rate the Carji like I used to.

Blitz has been at the club since 2013. And won the medal in '15 and '18.

For the record, Selsy won the Carji back to back in '13 and '14. Two seasons in which he was also AA captain.

And Danger then took it out in both '16 and '17. Also won the Brownlow in '16 and was AA in both of those seasons.

How did you rate the Carji outcome in those years?

No trouble at all with those, plenty of supporting data.
