Love getting a win first up. Especially a good one like that.

Nice to see Bont playing some great footy. Even excluding his goal late, his forward work in the last quarter was super important. I was getting a bit stressed when we had Gowers in the middle and Bont forward, but thankfully we got the ball down there enough for Bont to do some work.

Naughton is god tier. Can't believe how good he is for a second year player.

Williams was shocking. Had a lot of involvements in the Swans late run where he completely shit the bed, and a few lazy moments. I would drop him without a doubt. Bring Young in for him.

I understand. It's been a long life following this team. I'm usually like you and I don't know what's gonna happen against other opposition or later in the season. But by God that wasn't a fluke and their heart and souls were in this. And they were stuffed at the end so they're not perfectly match fit either. dont get me wrong ive been hi-fiving downtown athens for the last two hours... im gunna get arrested if i keep this shit up.

Sydney allowed us to play the channel and then couldn’t deal with chaos footy into the forward line

My biggest concern was how easily they opened us up when they decided to run.

I couldn’t get to the game live so did anyone at the game see the whole ground and how they made so much space? Was it just us running out of tank or did they change structure?
Gun and run from swans in the last - they had been woeful but it clicked for them with one big effort
They suddenly dominated the clearances and contested ball around the contest
It was pretty good to see our boys turn it around
But not so good we let them back in

Did anyone notice Bevo say in the press conference that Lewis and Roberts will "get a look-in" in due course?

I think it's going to be horses for courses. I certainly wouldn't have swapped any of tonight's defence out for Roberts. Maybe they'll consider sending Williams upfield in the next week or two (perhaps for Smith?) with Lewis Young taking his place.

Also a player like English might need a break by about Round 6 - he's going to be up against some seriously tough opponents and can't do it 100% of every game. We need to give him game time but we also need to look after him physically. (Minor point: I keep reading here that he's only 20 but in fact he turns 22 in a few months. He was already 19 when we drafted him.)

Yes he did. You have to wonder though if not against a team with Buddy, Reid and a competent Ruckman who can rest forward in Sinclair, then when?

Having said that I suspect that Beveridge knows that Buddy for all his immensity has never been a great contested mark and was happy enough to roll the dice on Wood at least halving most of their contests. A strategy that proved to be correct in the end.

Great effort. Always good to start win a win.

We should not have played b smith today. I think he would have been better off having a few games at vfl level bur oh well, what's done is done.

Naughton has awesome up forward and kicked straight.

The 2 new guys both showed good signs but i would love to have seen lloyd with a bit more of the ball in goal range.

Dickson doesnt seem to be able to kick 50 meters anymore but i think he knows that at will adjust accordingly. It was great to see him get some ball.

Richards is gunna be a freak.

Absolute bollocks about Williams. He and Wood kept Franklin quiet for 95% of the game. When the Swans began to dominate, our defenders were the last ones to blame. He’s a young lad and I don’t recall him ever playing such a deep defensive role. He didn’t have the game of his life but you are being way too harsh on the guy.

Yep. Credit to Bevo (and dare I say his coaching team?) for getting it right tonight.

Great to see a convincing win, besides 3/4’s of last quarter. Libba’s return was noticeable, Duryea and Lloyd also made a great difference. Bont looks fit, finally, and back to his best, while Macrae, Daniel, Dunkey were all very good.

Bailey Smith disappointing but give him another go next week. Credit to Bevo for Naughton’s move up forward - 3.2 + 1 out on full? Needs to fix his goal kicking though he looks a good target with Schache.

He was the worst player in the team, and it wasn't even close. Giving him any credit for keeping Franklin quiet is extremely generous. Wood did a decent job on him, but Franklin barely moved the entire game, so it wasn't like it was the regular Buddy task. Obviously Franklin is one of the best in the game, but he was very clearly not quite right.
Regardless, Williams had very little to do with that. And when the Swans were running on top of us, Williams was the main culprit in letting them to do it.

So no, not absolute bollocks. He was shithouse.

Watch the game again.Been a long time our midfield had such an advantage.
Trengrove is too short and too slow for Ruck
I think you're the one who needs to watch it again. Why do you think Sydney were prepared to let a 192cm defender like Heath Grundy ruck against him in the centre bounces?

What part of a 19 hitout, 8 disposal game gave our midfielders such a huge advantage? And in the 4th quarter, it felt like every tap English won went straight to Sydney players.

So you're saying we should sacrifice consistency and performance right now for the sake of the future? If we were rebuilding, I'd be inclined to agree, but I think this team is more than capable of contending, therefore I believe we should be fielding the best possible team every week.

When we get into finals, and deep into finals, do you want the short, slow lumbering ruckman, with poor skills ?

Or do you want the 205cm, agile, skilled and good leg speed guy to take on the likes of Grundy and Gawn ??

And how many games do you want that guy to have played ?? 10 or 50 ?

And do we channel our inner Ross Lyon and play no kids and destroy the club for a decade to come ??

My biggest issue with English isn’t actually him. It’s that we lack the skilled players in support to take advantage of his natural attributes. Numerous times he has been clear and in space and we handball to his ankles, behind him, eleventy seven foot over his head, wide of him etc. Or kick it straight to his opponent lumbering after him.

We need to use him as a linkup player more if we can, but we need better disposal to utilise him fully.

Mate don’t you realise a 20 year old ruckman should be the complete package and dominate games.

Come on get with the program we dominated clearance for 3/4 but that isn’t good enough for some.

Personally I’d trade him and bring Vickery in immediately

I want a player that's ready. Right now, English isn't ready, and he's going to have a very tough time against McEvoy, who's like Hawthorn's best player right now.

You're also underselling Trengove quite a bit. He was looking really good in the ruck towards the end of last year, certainly better than what Roughead and Boyd were producing up to that point. Even if Trengove isn't that tall, he can hold his ground in strength battles and provide a better target to kick to. English didn't look like marking anything today, even against 15cm shorter opponents in 1v1s.

Huh? Playing the best players you have available is destroying the club? Did it destroy Hawthorn? They barely had any players under 23 in their three-peat teams.

St.Kilda destroyed themselves with poor drafting and comically stupid list management decisions. First rounder for Lovett, two first rounders for Tom Lee and Tom Hickey, not giving Goddard a fair contract, I could go on.

English will only get better. Every single week. If we do not get games into him now, he will take longer to reach the peak of his capabilities.

Yes, rest him when it’s needed. Yes, bring JT in if needed for a ruck double act. But there were lots of dropped marks, fumbles and skill errors this week - across every game. Give him the chance to improve and learn at the highest level, he will be an amazing point of difference in our side soon. He will start clunking marks and kicking goals.

Yes, the Saints made some poor trading and recruitment calls - but Lyon has systematically set both them and Freo back years by refusing to play and develop the kids.

Because we were winning the centre clearance. And when your Trenny plays we don't.

Don't misunderstand, I haven't lost faith in English, I just believe in fielding the best available team every week, especially if we're contending. Right now, I think he has to show more at VFL level to justify selection ahead of Trengove.

Have to say, you have a pretty shitty, cancerous attitude towards a player of our club. People like you always change their mind when proven wrong, which usually happens on a weekly basis.

Amazing how much better the midfield works when a fit and firing Liber is in there. He just makes us tick.

Naughton. Star. Everytime the ball went near him inside 50 we looked dangerous. Could kick 40 goals this year.

Think Williams will be nervous if he plays a few more bad ones with JJ to come in. Same with Dickson, can see Lip taking his spot soonish. Wouldn’t drop either yet.

Dunno how it looked on TV but at the game I thought Crozier and Wood were fantastic. More defensive than usual, but held the backline together well. We will need Moz back tho, as seen by Reid plunking a few in the second half.

A great win. Hunter is gonna be AA with the new rules making fun wingmen stand out.

Pot kettle! dude - you on angry pills tonight?
If I went and said "and when your Timmy plays, we struggle", I have little doubt you and about 10 posters would be biting my head off.

Garbage posts like that are reserved for yourself and the Mattdougies of this board. If calling that out upsets you, too bad.

was working when the game was on so only caught bits and pieces. Missed the fade out, but saw great fight and drive from the players tonight.
Warms my cockles to see Libba getting about, That midfield just hums.
Saw a couple of little things from Schache that was happy with, a bit of aggression.
Wasn't expecting it, but very happy for the win.

English isn’t ready but neither is Richards . Ruckman get picked on. I thought Timmy was pretty bloody good tonight. I don’t want him in the twos.

We shit the bed and still won. Good times.

I’m so fed up with bananas and tooty too round the corners and check side kicks. Bring back the drop punt. Stop being a fancy dan all fur coat no knickers kick it out on the full

We will beat hawthorn
