Yeah add me to the get rid of the Richmond season opener list.

I saw most of the games this weekend, reckon we would have beaten at least 6-7 teams based on some really insipid/rusty performances (especially today)

4 points in the bank after round 1 is surely better for the club's bottom line (esp with memberships) than the gate from the Tigers clash.

Further to my earlier post in relation to average match aggregates for Round 1 this year in comparison to Round 1 last year, with Round 1 now complete the numbers are as follows:
Round 1 2019: average match aggregate 157 points.
Round 1 2018: average match aggregate 177 points.

Round 1 2019: 8 teams scored 65 points or less.
Round 1 2018: 3 teams scored less than 65 points (2 of these scores were in the Gold Coast-North game played in Cairns in wet conditions).

Although the 6-6-6 rule made clearances from the centre bounce cleaner, it has not resulted in higher scores as the AFL might have hoped.

Long flight home for the unfortunate who gets to sit next to Scottie on the plane back to Melbourne - indeed, maybe they’ll set up some kind of interchange system, and if so I’m certain there’ll be no shortage of “runners”! Time-wise, the return leg is considerably shorter than the flight over to Perth, but I suspect that it won’t feel that way for the Roos coaches and players.

As others have said, our loss is placed in a very different perspective by what’s followed over the weekend. Given the recent stats on teams reaching the finals after a 0-2 start (iirc it’s only 3 out of the last 50+ teams with that start who have gone on to qualify for the finals), Round 2 is going to be immense. If we can get up against Port (not easy, I know), then we’ll be sitting alongside some much more fancied rivals, and more than likely ahead of some others.

Interesting times.

It’s been like a refocusing of defence thought for the coaches. It appears that this has been their main focus in the pre-season. How do we stop this new rule from being effective?

Feels like the AFL is forever trying to fix the erroneous rules that they've previously put into place thereby making the game increasingly and needlessly complex.

I'd rather the AFL had have taken a KISS approach. Too late for that though.

The problem is with the coaches and their endless search for an advantage even if it’s not pretty to watch.

The coaches are the guardians of the game and I think they have total control over the look of the game. It’s a high responsibility that they should take very seriously.

We developed a game that was the antithesis of rugby for a reason. To see it evolve back into a game with many similarities to the game of rugby is not an ideal that I’m prepared to accept.

So if the coaches won’t look after the game then someone else has to.

Just remove ruck nominating, penalise a team if more than one goes up and stop umpires waiting and asking if everyone is ready before a ball up, giving time for more players to reach the stoppage/ setup behind. Easiest way to increase game flow and hardly changes the game at all... In fact all it does is correct their own dumb meddling.

I agree with you but that is a different discussion from the 6-6-6 rule.

We’re in two different camps and that’s fine.

I’m not enamoured to the modern game. The spectacular has been taken away and been replaced with the repetitive. So in that sense I do find the modern game boring to watch.

However I still go for those rare moments when the spectacular returns and I’m out of my seat screaming like a teenager.

I find myself alot more excited when we are winning.

6 6 6 has very little impact on the game unless there is very accurate kicking for goal and a number of clean quick exits from centre clearances.

From observing the Richmond Carlton game live on Thursday night, Houli simply stood on the back edge of the square and sidled into defence when the ball was bounced to create an extra defender.

If the AFL were legit they would have marked a dot on the wing and told the wingers they had to start there. However, once the game is in motion the rolling maul quickly returns.

Yes the extra man rushing back from centre sure worked for Richmond on a big ground the MCG- on a smaller ground the wings wouldn't even have to run it would be a large step....

It was inevitable that this would be the main focus. It is just a shame that our great game, which once was far more free flowing & attractive than other football codes, is being strangled by those who have the greatest control, yet aren't the key players i.e. coaches.

They went ahead & did it, but rejigged it using average score per team, rather than aggregate game score. They did a similar thing last season when I posted about goalless/scoreless quarters.

You've hit on a key aspect in referencing kicking for goal. The best opportunity to benefit from the 6-6-6 rule, IMO, is to regularly kick goals, particularly for a team like us who go alright with clearances. We missed a number of very kickable shots on goal on Thursday which would have allowed us to get another 50/50 contest at the centre bounce & hopefully set up further scoring opportunities, while at the same time giving our younger, less match hardened players the chance to catch their breath/reset.

Kicking for goal has become so poor right across the competition & is something that coaches need to see as a skill that could give you an advantage with the 6-6-6 rule, if you have a quality midfield.
