Was at the game and i think the only player I am biased against myself is our Captain because im sick of seeing him butcher the ball or put his team mates in terrible positions with at least 80% of his possessions.

I dont think Lonie did a lot yesterday, think I remember a nice pass from the pocket to set up a shot on goal in the 1st qtr maybeagree has been ok in JLT but I think overall his negatives outweigh h

is positives, sure pops up for a goal here and there and can slot a nice pass
I think there was a reason no other club wanted to sign him when he was "looking around" after last year.

1 GAs and 3 score involvements (Parker 2GAs and 6 SIs)

Based on game on weekend and now with Parker in the side, and Kent, I think we need another mid in the 22 instead of lonie being one of 3 or 4 smaller forwards, thats just my opinion, if kent plays same again for next couple games I think he would be out of the 22 too BTW.
Parker was out of the box, I guess I think of him as a medium.

You'd take lonie's game every week though
14 kicks, 8 HB, 6 marks, 5 i50s, 4 tackles, 2 clearances, 1 snag - if he'd kicked that second it would have been an elite output.

Well if lonie got a game this week he certainly gets a game next week. For those wanting another marking forward well we had nearly doubled gc marks inside 50 and about the same as any winning side. We get more benefit with pressure with a smaller forward line than we would with pack marks especially playing a guy who really isn’t a full time forward

We were really poor in parts. The umpiring was absolute garbage, our clearance work bar one seb centre clearance was shizen (yet numbers in that area were okay) and we're still burning teammates in great spots going i50 - some things never change.

But we won. Good start to any season begins with a win. Make no mistake you sense the boys were toey about this game.

Ffs though our future needs games.....Hunter, Marshall and Froff in plz

Yeh I think he gets a game next week, just hope we have someone come through who forces him out of the side, as Ive said a couple times in last couples days on here, we are a bottom 4 side, so you can back a player like lonie or whatever all you like, but simple fact is he shouldn't be in the side if we want to be playing finals anytime soon, along with a few others I know.
I know people are getting a bit over the negative comments on here etc but its just simple fact, we aint good enough so that is why people are getting frustrated. Boy did Richo's smirk on coverage at end of game irk me, congrats, you just beat a glorified VFL side by a point on your home deck!

Yes annoying that he enjoyed the win. Should have been angry. I just don’t get people. They are that biased against richo if he smiles is bad but if he was angry it would be also bad. I was to busy enjoying the win to worry about what the coaches face looks like. And you are right about lonie most likely not being in a finals side but there is probably 25 others on our list who aren’t good enough either. Also players can improve. Lonie certainly has. Who is to say he won’t continue to improve

I feel round 1 is always a tough one to gauge, we had periods when we were really dominant and times when we were a little bit lazy and unlucky also.

The fact we only won by are point, although you can easily look at it in a discouraging way i like to look at the positive.

We kicked straight which obviously helped, we are considerably quicker this year.
Newnes i was happy and relieved as i was pretty shocked with how bad he was last year, but his JLT and yesterday suggest he looks to have gotten back his confidence and we have a solid B grader again.

Thought Joyce, Wilkie and Battle were really good all day. Mckenzie although tired late, i liked how he used the ball under pressure, with his size and speed that was something he needed to improve if he was going to make it at AFL level, although a small sample size i thought that was a real positive.

It was great to have Bruce back and playing aggressive Footy, he is so vocal and has great enthusiasm which just gives great energy to his Teammates.

Long and Parker were electric in the first Half i think that reverse free kick might of taken the wind out of Long's sale, as he wasn't as aggressive after that, which for a young player is understandable.

Few negatives but conditions were difficult as they always are when the roof is open on a sunny day.
I'd like to see Blake in as he gives us something different and at training he just dominates.

Bombers this week new game new challenge and i think if we come with the same energy as the Second Quarter we will win.

What were Lonie's pressure act numbers like?

Yesterday continued his strong form from late last year, was probably the most effective small forward again.
He had 11 pressure acts. Not too bad.
Apologies - Parker was second to Dunstan who had 24.

Dunstan - 24
Parker - 20
Steele - 19
Sinclair - 18 ( Underrated his game yesterday )
Geary - 13
Long - 12

Difference was, GC have a lot in the higher bracket. McPherson + Miller 24/23 respectively.
Then a host high teens. They were hungrier around the contest.

Agree.
I always thought we’d take some time to get our systems right.
Match sim is fine, but no substitute for the real thing.
We’re going to go missing a few times before we get the hang of it.
Also knew this was going to be tough.
I actually took the time to watch the Suns in JLT.
They played the same way today as they did when they defeated the Bulldogs.
We were lucky but I’ll take the win.
I sense this will be a huge load off the team, after all Richo wanted Finnis to address the players after the first JLT win.
What does that tell you about the group’s self confidence?
Winning these first games are obviously critical for that.
I also argue that this performance is different from last year.
While the opposition might have been similar, we had a different team on the park. One better suited for modern football.
Not our best team, but I’m sure that will come.
Finally, I now understand why Dunstan’s in this team.
He is a role player.
And today he played his role.
Big shout out to his bodywork today.
The shepherd for Ross and that final 50/50.
You could argue his effectiveness in his role saved/won the game.
Agree Sunny.
We went into this game with so much pressure on us,after a woeful 2018 season, that the boys involved last year played some Tense Football realising the expectation on them.
2 guys out on the ground yesterday that didnt have that tension or fear of losing, were our AFL Debutants and i thought they played with that mindset.
Hopefully some pressure has been released to tackle the rest of the season.
Hopefully Parkers Enthusiam at playing at the highest level, becomes infectous.

You ok mate?

I'm good as gold today "Pardon me".

That flat feeling was a combo of:

1-Our long and chaotic trip to the ground......all plans went out of the window due to the as it turned out,Greek Festival near the shrine....traffic was horrendous....thousands and thousands of people in the park near the Shrine.....meaning no parking avail in the back streets off St.Kilda road.

We normally walk to Marvel from some of the groups place in Southbank.....I parked under their place and we went in the car of one of the others...….the clock was ticking.....took ages to get to our old parking spot next to the Holden dealership next to the Westgate Freeway.

The traffic was semi gridlock everywhere.

Got to the game 5 mins in...

2-The heat was a little energy sapping.....the east side terraces get quite warm in the afternoon.

3-That nail biting last 1/4 was the "nail in the coffin"........I was absolutely spent.....as was most of our group.

A good nights sleep and I'm "back in town"

Just like to point out ( if it hasn't already ) Matty Parker had 20 pressure acts, the highest of any Saints player and only second to Miller, who was outstanding for them all day. The complete standout for mine. Showed a lot of senior players how its done and what it takes.

Agreed he had a great game and love the pressure, but..... Dunstan had 24PA. Probably easier on the ball to generate those numbers aposed to the front half though.

I don't think it has been said, but how great is Jimmy Webster.
Such at elite kick and so important for setting us up offensively but also works harder than anyone to do all the small defensive things.

He chased (boston open goal) 50m and nearly caught him to. Sets a great example I thought as he could of just said oh well I'll save my legs here..

I'm enjoying this thread. I want to enjoy the win. The lack of concentration in the last quarter is understandable. It was very hot at the ground, even in the shade.
Newnes played really well. A couple of Ross's centre clearances were great. Ben Long was good. I like his aggression and hope he keeps it up. We need to be more unsociable and he is good at it.
Go Saints.

As well as Bruce's mark, I thought the Joyce spoil on Wright in the final 40 seconds was important. I also thought the turning point of the game was the free kick against Long when Steven was having a shot for goal. The lesson to learn for Long is that useless bravado like that achieves nothing and could have cost us the win.
To be fair on Long in that particular play,he and his opponent both slapped each other in the chest 3 times,(with the umpire clearly able to see all of them)so why was the free given when it was.If the 6th push to the chest was a free why were the previous ones let go.

winning ugly is better than losing pretty.
Positives for me:
Parker - got me excited every time he went near it. He just has something and if he can put it all together in a game he is going to be a serious player. His best moment was the 3-4 efforts he put in deep in our forward line that resulted in the ball spilling over the line. Richo needs to put this on replay this week for the whole team.
Newnes - thought he was pretty good all day
Bruce - really happy with his game and the mark at end....impressive
Dunstan - although I’d drop him for acres this week that last contest was huge.
lonie - he try’s so hard. If he could improve his body strength or add something to his game such as Poppy’s hanger ability then we’d have a great little player.
Wilkie - thought he was pretty impressive on debut. Took some nice intercepts and uses the ball so well. Will be a nice player once he gets to 50 games
Webster - strong in the contest. Love him

Negatives - our backline battled hard all day but given we had 3 of them with about 12 games between them we were always going to be up against it.
Telecast - gave me a headache watching it and half the time couldn’t even see. Just shut the roof
Umpires - shocking. That Long reversal was an embarrassment. But for f*** sake if we have a shot on goal walk away. The look on stuvs face when he lost it
4 shots on goal went on the full. Very nearly could’ve cost us the game

Few things to work on:
We need a permanent player inside 50. We looked good going forward when we had a player leading up at the footy. But too often we pushed numbers up the ground, then on the counter had to run back and they just picked us off.
The long bomb doesn’t work. I’d rather see them trying to hit a player on a lead than take the “safe” long option. We do this because we’re scared on the counter attack
Need to devise a strategy when we are defending a kick in. They ran it out far too easily and even went coast to coast.
I think we really got the team selection wrong. We’ll be better for the run and need time for the new guys to gel

Changes:
Acres for Dunstan.
Clark for savage.
Brown for Joyce. Thought he was ok for a bloke with only 3 games but 6 frees against
I think Marshall offers more than pierce but give him 2-3 games and let him develop

True. I've watched the replay a few times and I'm not sure how the umpire could have paid the free kick but my feelings are still the same. When your teammate is having a shot for goal, spend your time congratulating the players that put him in that position and not engaging in an act that may jeopardise that shot at goal.

Parkers second and third efforts all day were outstanding, he hunts players down, he's predatorily. He's my new favourite player already. The pressure he was under to perform was huge yesterday and to recover fro his first snap at goal and just focus on the task was excellent.
