Big game, big stage and with 4 debutantes. A win was out of the question according to the pundits. Geelong struggle at the MCG and were up against the premiership favourites. This was going to be a cakewalk. Tim Kelly wasn't dedicated, the kids were raw, our defence wasn't nimble enough to handle the fleet of foot Collingwood forwards and Rhys Stanley was about to have his colours lowered at the hands of the games premier ruckman ... well it didn't go according to script.
What we witnessed was a dedicated and committed Geelong outfit that rose to the challenge. The kids weren't overawed and displayed enough to suggest the future is headed in the right direction. Almost half the team that took the field in the first game of the season had played under 50 games of AFL football. The likes of Miers, Constable, Parfitt, Clark, O'Connor, Atkins, Henry and Ratugolea may not be household names yet but gave the club every reason to get excited.
Ablett revelled in his new role and our new look forward half made it hard for their opponents with their manic pressure and will for the contest. Stanley won the ruck battle with Grundy and our defence got the job done. Tim Kelly showed no signs of homesickness as his stocks continue to rise and Brandon Parfitt was classy in his new role as a midfielder. Dahlhaus was the pick of the recruits and Constable the pick of the kids.
