This is very very speculative at best!

After Matthew Lloyds comments believing it is (he's not alone), he has lost credibility for mine.

What about the wc mids of 05 06, and the early 90's?

Or Sydney of 05 and 06?

Stkilda 09 and 10?

Collingwood of 10 and 11?

Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond of the late 70's early 80's?

Brisbane in their halcyon years?

There's so many examples that could arguably be exalted as "the best of all time"

Ok it bats deep no one is going to deny it, but to flat out rate as the "best ever" is clutching at straws.

It's hyperbole of the highest order.

Are any of the BF family actually convinced this is the best midfield "of all time"?

For mine that would be very naive.

They have an outstanding midfield right now, and it bats very deep. What they don't have compared to the very top midfields is one or two all time greats at the peak of their powers. Pendles is a Hall of Famer but near the end of his career, Treloar Beams and Sidebottom all very good but not at that level.

Same thing was said about Geelongs last year. It wasn't even the best Geelong midfield within the last decade. Even if you set the time frame at 2000, no current team has the best of anything. There have been substantially better midfields, forward lines, and defences in the last 2 decades than anything right now, let alone going back over 100 years.

It's deeper than the Brisbane Geelong an WC midfield but when you look at the top handful on paper it doesn't compare

Keating
Voss
Akermanis
Black
Lappin

Cox
Cousins
Judd
Kerr
Fletcher

Ottens
Ablett
Selwood
Bartel
Kelly
Corey
Ling

I even think Collingwood had better midfields when Swan and Pendlebury were at their peak. I think the best midfield was Cox, Judd, Kerr and Cousins. They stastically had off the chart numbers and regularly outplayed the Brisbane Lions great midfield at the time. Plus they carried a forward line of Lynch and Hansen as key forwards to a flag. That would be hard to do in any era. But its a difficult and complex argument

If Collingwood plays all of Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Treloar, Beams and Phillips in the midfield it's way too offensive. Which one of them will tackle?

All of those players play to a system built on swarm and spread, they are team 1st players. Beams for starters is noted as a pressure inside and a transitional outside mid.

None of this is really thread relevant, even on paper this midfield even with it's depth is at best is only arguable as "best of all time" hardly convincing.

View attachment 642032+ Luke Power, Shaun Hart. Also running through the midfield- Brad Scott, Robert Copeland, Martin Pike, Tim Notting, Marcus Ashcroft.

Legendary. You forget how good they were sometimes. Lappin, Aker, Black and Voss.

Slot them in any team now and premierships will begin to flow.

Great arguments right there, admittedly Corey was a defender though. All those midfields though are very accomplished!

That midfield only managed 1 premiership together.
Geelong had a good forward line (not great) and exceptional backs during their golden run but it was the midfield which dictated games.
Chapman, Corey, Ling, Ablett, Bartel, Kelly and Selwood were always good for 20+ a game.

For sheer brilliance, you can't go past Brisbane.
That midfield was a rolls royce.
Even the lesser-likes in Ashcroft and Hart were solid players. Luke Power was a star in his own right and stepped up when the others retired.
Great midfield.

Collingwood's midfield is the best in the game currently.
They will hit their straps by the mid point of the season.

Corey Enright was a defender.

Geelong’s midfield of 2007-09 is nearly impossible to topple in my opinion, no matter the angle taken.

Hear hear, they were so dominant! Would it beat the current Collingwood mids? Hard to quantify but I think your post puts to bed the argument that the current Collingwood midfield is "the best of all time".

It's because the media look at individual accolades and player achievements.

They take one look at Ablett... 'superstar'. One look at Dangerfield... 'superstar'. One look at Selwood... 'superstar'.

Immediately put them together... 'oh watch out. This is the best midfield in decades'.

No performance for proof. No looking at how well they'll work together.

According to these people, a team of champions makes a champion team.

Are people really comparing guys like Voss, Ablett, Cousins, Akermanis, Bartel, Kerr and Judd to Taylor Adams, Adam Treloar, Steele Sidebottom and Dayne Beams? Geez that’s insulting to the true champions of the game. Not one Brownlow in the Collingwood group probably says it all really. In fact, if you take Pendles out they’ve achieved stuff all.
