I believe the real situation is that Dan is so dedicated to his rehab that he advised the club he would be doing rehab for most of his waking hours and would therefore be unavailable to attend those 20 minute leadership meetings twice a week.

To further prove his dedication, he's even going to spend less time with his friends from Kittens.
