Could Nash become a second/third tall defender, just punch the ball at every opportunity? I don’t know maybe that would be to big of an ask.
We really need to find a young tall forward and defender going forward

Not a bad idea but we already have Chip and Mirra who are bordering crooks with ball in hand

Miles, Howe, Moore and Wingard all possible in's for mine. We need to get some run into the final term our last 3 matches we've died in the arse.

This. We need added run to our side big time while Roughy McEvoy and Ceglar are all playing in the same side.

We have them already. Sicily forward & Brand down back. It still amazes me that we don't play Brand consistently.
Yeah talk about this often re Brand getting a good block of games knowing he won’t be dropped for a while, thought he was pretty good in 17? When all our defenders were out injured.
Similar with Miles, how he was dropped for finals last year was horrible

Burger Shiels and Nash out
Howe Moore and Brand in

Wingard not ready.

Sicily replaces Nash in the forward 50.
Brand plays Key back.
Howe must tag Higgins or he will end up with 35 and 3 goals if we don’t put the time into him.

swapping Nash and Lewis is changing our structures, doesn't mean it won't happen but Lewis and Cegs and Rough in the forward line is taller and slower than Nash and Cegs and Rough, and probably no better at contested marking with how easily Lewis still gets pushed aside at the top level.

Lewis is a much better kick for goal than Nash and good on the lead so could bring something different

Not sure that Moore or Hanrahan can bring anything like the pressure and speed that Nash can, Moore could run for 4 quarters but Ollie would fade.

Wingard for Nash would make sense and perhaps that is what the MC have been waiting for

Because we don't need Brand. The absolute worst thing you could take out of that game was that our defense needed to be changed because it was the only part of our group that actually did their job properly.

None of Scrimshaw, Sicily, Hardwick, Frawley, Stratton and Impey are getting removed from that back 6. It's tall enough, versatile enough, and no one seems to have the difficulty that Brand seems to have in executing a game plan.

Brand is a liability when caught one-on-one (almost 50% loss rate last year) and gets lost in transition, he gets caught out if the defenders rotate. Constantly. Hawthorn is a well drilled team defense, which means that the most important factor is to be able to execute that strategy. In order to fit in without being able to execute you'd need to be an exceedingly good one-on-one defender to make up for it. Brand isn't that.

At this point, even if we throw Sicily forward, Mirra is clearly second in line.

Here's the Brand vs. Mirra equation on a scale that measures one on one defense, and team defense. The area of the space that they cover on this scale is their defensive suitability.

Brand measures a 6 (generous) on the one on one defensive scale but only a 2 on the team defensive scale. The total area, or his defensive suitability, would be 12.

Mirra may only measure a 4 on the one on one defensive scale, but because he's much better at executing the team defense with a 6, his total defensive suitability is much better at 24.

These figures are complete ass, but I just wanted to show graphically the Brand equation and why he is not our messiah.

Brand will be less of a liability if the is playing forward imo. Let the defender make contact. He just needs to mark ball or make a contest. This need to be explored. If I see Roughy jump up with his two hands straight in the air again I will lose it. Its basically an unrealistic attempt. He got frustrated with Caleb Daniel ffs.

Yes I would like to see Brand in the forward line as well. He has a solid body and a decent set of hands and he wont have those moments where he panics and seeks body contact with his opposition player which he tends to do in the backline.
You are right about Rough, all 2018 was the same story (getting out marked by 6 foot and under defenders). Realistically Rough is now a big ruck rover / forward flank he is no longer a KPP.

If Chip goes down it is an easy restructure as well. I really hope he gets a run at it. He actually reads the play quite well which makes me think he would go ok forward and he was recruited after playing forward. It is one on one where it gets dicey with Brand.

Surely Chad comes in this week along with Howe. Out Shiels and burgers is it worth dropping nash for a tall like lewis or one of our young smalls like Dylan Moore? Cegs was also shithouse maybe hes worth dropping as well

Cegs played a great game against the Crowtards...so, one average game now means immediate relegation?

North are pretty tall down back with Thompson and Tarrant. I'd go ultra small against them with Wingard, Breust, Pops and Gunno all buzzing around and see how they cope at ground level

Play Nash in the centre

This isn't the worst idea.
Get Nash to just follow Higgins around the field for 2 hours and bury him into the turf every time he gets the ball. He has the tank to do it.
Howe can then come in and be directed to play more of a 'see ball, get ball' style a-la Mitchell

Wingard then slots in to the forward line. He won't come back with enough match fitness to play in the middle for any more than 1-2 centre square bounces each quarter, but should be able to slot into a pocket.

Don't know if we need to go nuts with the changes. If it isn't just the two needed changes, then maybe Mirra comes back in for Morrison.

We are down three midfielders with Mitchell, Burgoyne and Shiels all out. I think Jones could be a sneaky chance to play this week. Even Clarkson in his round 1 press conference said he was the unlucky one not to have been selected for that game against Adelaide. I know Hanrahan and Moore have been the emergencies, however those two are fighting for spots in which we have good depth in so I'd rather see Jones come in who's an inside midfielder.

Scully got through unscathed and a few more games and he will be a major boost. The positive was Cousins and Scrimshaw improved from what they showed in round 1. Cousins is averaging 21 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles and 1.5 goals per game so far.

IN: Wingard, Howe, Jones

OUT: Burgoyne, Shiels, Nash (omitted)

B: Stratton, Frawley, Hardwick

HB: Scrimshaw, Sicily, Impey

C: Scully, Howe, Smith

HF: Wingard, Gunston, Henderson

F: Breust, Roughead, Puopolo

R: McEvoy, O'Meara, Worpel

INT: Morrison, Ceglar, Cousins, Jones

Will be interesting to see how we're umpired this week.

Maybe we get the rub of the green for a change as a low key "fix up" for last week.

Or maybe they screw us over again just to show they're consistent.

I'm stuffed as to why we are strong favourites here. its a 50-50 for sure

Agree it's a close call considering the last few games we've played against them; however, both of Norths games have been utter rubbish, we have actually played well and only fell in a 20 minute blackhole

North are terrible at the MCG that’s probably why.

A lot of calls for Sicily forward this year I see but I think we're much better and much safer with him down back. I understand the calls for someone who can take a clunk but he's not going to take all that many the way we bomb the ball in and allow opposition teams to murder the high ball. As strong a grab as he is he's better at intercepting and reading the ball in the backline than being expected to be superman the way we take the ball forward.

All our forward line needs is for the current reasonably high quality unit to be treated better than they currently are in terms of service.

Considering the depth (or lack thereof) in our midfield and the inside 50s against we are conceding, I'm much happier with the Sic down back.

Is that based on anything concrete ? Because I'm hearing that he's likely to play at this point in time.
