Would’ve helped if every single first rounder from 2009 to 2015 wasn’t a bust either.

Morabito was better than Fyfe in their first year. I highly doubt he’d have reached Fyfe’s level but he would have been an absolute gun.

Jayden Pitt was the wrong selection from the start but was a rake when he started and got a heart condition that forced his retirement at 21 before he’d started to be a decent option for selection.

Sheridan played in a final in his second year. He played 40 games in two years from 2015 to 2016. His body was built up to the level and then he was given heaps of chances but didn’t take them. Ross Lyon dropped Paul Duffield who was our best ball user to fit him in in 2015. Crozier wasn’t ready until at least his third year yet debuted in his first. Again was given plenty of opportunities he never took.

Simpson was a joke selection. Even before he was drafted he couldn’t cope with Perth. Talent wise he was a top five selection.

Apeness had had ACL injuries before he’d been drafted and continued to be nothing but knee injury after knee injury in his time with us. Was the wrong selection. I think the club wanted McCarthy tbh and panicked knowing we needed talls desperately - at this time only Taberner of our current KPPs was on our list.

Weller was good for a while with us but pissed off. Was 100% worth a first rounder in 2017 but not Pick 2.

We traded our first back to a very early second in 2015, Tucker was that second and I doubt he’s played less than 15 games in a year tbh.

Maybe if our first rounders weren’t so rubbish...

Also the Blakely and Langdon claims are just false. Firstly they were drafted the same year and the above poster said one had been playing longer. Secondly I doubt either has played WAFL since their second or third year - both are clearly best 22 players and would be for most teams. And Hughes as an example of not playing youth... the guy was plucked from WAFL Reserves as a rookie a couple of years after converting from another sport. It’s almost a pass mark from the club he played a single game of AFL at all!

Drafting of first rounders is the major problem here. Ultimately we used high resources and got nothing from 2009 to 2013. Morabito was the only one that was genuine bad luck - the rest just poor drafting.
To be fair you didn’t have too many top picks. You were a good side with the expansion teams coming in so all the picks are in the teens. You weren’t butchering top 5 picks.

I think we tried to be too clever at times tbh.

2010. Darling the obvious selection. We took a guy that was built like a rake who admittedly had a great kick on him.
2011. Again drafted skinny kids with high upside but low probability. Ended up getting Hill who most of our fans wanted years later.
2012. Simpson had the most upside of anyone at that pick but there’s been kids with more ability and less off field issues overlooked altogether.
2013. Panicked because we had no decent young talls and we seemed to have assumed McCarthy would be there. Also think this was the main reason we let Elliot Yeo go to West Coast.

From these drafts only Alex Pearce and Matt Taberner remain. There’s the problem. Excuses or no excuses our drafting still sucked.

Port absolutely nailed it

For Richmond stack has been great from going undrafted because of offield issues he’s really knuckled down after moving in with dimma and his family

Peter sumich rated him the best under 18 player in wa and a top 10 talent early days but happy to have him at the club the shining light of a shitty season to date

Do have to take your hat off to Port for this trade and draft period. Were extremely proactive in starting a refresh and traded to get as many top 20 picks as they could. Identifed this draft as being a belter and backed themselves in. Its not often clubs are so aggressive and its payed off in spades so far

Can see port nailing this year Draft too with their father and son pick .

Pick #43 - Jack Ross Richmond

1st Game 25 disposals
4 marks
5 tackles
10 contested Poss
74% Game time

Kid looked like he's played 100 games
He does look ready made.

Richmond kept their interest in him under wraps leading into the draft.

I know Essendon were pretty keen on him, but made the call on Mosquito instead.

Perhaps they thought Ross would fly under the radar to their next pick.

Port Adel took note when they were calling it a super draft and then nailed it..... other clubs didnt take note
Considering we had pick 19 as our first pick, I don't think we could have done much better than we have. RCD will be excellent, Ross is a gun, Turner looks the goods, English is solid and Stack is ridiculous for a rookie. Plus we got Lynch as a FA so we didn't give up picks.

So? We've already ascertained that at least on paper they've done well. My response was more directed at the fact that they were the practically the only team that realised it was a superdraft.

WINNERS
Adelaide--Will Hamill will be the steal of this draft
Bulldogs--2 x 250 game players West and Smith plus Khamis has grown and is now 196cm steal
Port Adel--Big win for them 4 Solid picks did very well
GWS--they smashed it best draft ever for them 5 A grade players
Gold Coast---again there best ever draft Rankine is that good
Losers
Brisbane--Horrible draft
Collingwood--over paid massive
Frem--again shocking draft
North--YUKKKKK 8 for Thomas is shocking Crocker would not make ant other Sub list
We got Polac for 9 and Thomas for a bunch of later picks.

I would be more than happy to give up a top 10 pick for Thomas. He is extremely exciting.

I know he went early but I'd be very happy with Thomas at this early stage.

Crocker looks good too just btw.

Anyway back to the topic at hand.

After 20 rounds (as much as it hurts) I'm going to say Port were the big winners of the draft.
Rozee, Butters, Duursma are all high quality and playing at a good level already.

Carlton have a ripper in Walsh but it was a fairly no-brainer type pick.
Gold Coast with King and Lukocious look great too. And we havent even seen Rankine due to injury.

I mean generally teams with the early picks will win the draft.

Wild Bill

Dangerfield didnt join the club in Adelaide until his second year and it was obvious he was going to be a superstar from that point.
Sloane was a pick in the 40s in his 2nd draft after being overlooked. He wasn't essentially part of a deal to give up pick 3-4 which is the guy we're talking about. The expectation was a lot different.
Josh Kennedy was behind a number of superstars in that hawks midfield before he made the move. Cant recall but was probably played out of position which affected his output.

Not everyone develops at the same speed...we know that...but he'd wanna be pretty good (and so would the player we pick with 3-4)

The deal with the Blues won’t have a winner for a long time. Give the kid you draft with the Blues pick and the kid the Blues draft with your pick - and Stocker some time to develop.

Gold Coast have done well with their selections, unfortunately they made a silly trade with Brisbane that looks almost as bad as their previous trade with West Coast. If they'd simply rejected the trade and kept their picks, they could have got McLennan without needing to overpay.

Stack is a gun. i was bewildered he didn't get picked up. even late or during the rookie draft
I was a little disappointed we didn't back ourselves in here.

Looking at the draft, depending on how Jones go that top 10 could be one for the ages.
Walsh, Rankine, Luko, Rozee, Kings, Blakey, Smith and Thomas are all looking like guns.
