Sign of the times when it’s a struggle to name your best 22 without leaving quality out of the side

Broad - Rance - Grimes
Vlastuin - Astbury - Houli
Edwards - Martin - Lambert
Higgins - Lynch - Rioli
Butler - Riewoldt - Baker/Weller
Nankervis - Cotchin - Prestia
Ross- Balta - Short - Graham

(KMac in if Lynch injured..not like for like but doesn’t Need to be)

Our defensive group is solid.
Rance, Astbury, Grimes, Houli, Vlaustin, Short.
Houli has stepped up.
It means players like Markov and Menadue would have to wait.
Midfielders would be Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Lambert, Graham and Edwards (as a mid-forward).
Essential forwards (excluding injury) would be Riewoldt, Butler, Rioli, Weller, Balta.
Leaves five. Nank, Soldo, then Broad, KMc, Ross.

Ins for R1 from PF. = Lynch for Caddy, Butts for Georgie, Balta for Grigg, Ellis for Conca. No one stiff to miss out, although Baker and Markov not far off.

Sadly unless Bachar can get back to something close to his 2017 GF form, I can see him being eased out of the side this year. Could be age slowing the reflexes but while he still gets to many contests, his disposal has become steadily less reliable. I saw a lot of that in our Prelim Final exit against Collingwood (albeit he was not alone in this) and he turned it over too often in the recent game against Hawthorn. The conservative position is to keep him in the side until someone like Markov steps up to claim the position but I'd prefer us to blood a replacement now rather than wait for the inevitable.

Listening to Balme on SEN would suggest Mav Weller is a lock. Sounds like the club love him already and what he provides.

Good forward pressure he crunches blokes pretty good infront of the sticks allows Rioli Butler Higgins to run through mid and wing

Shame caddy is injured but round 1

VLASTIN RANCE GRIMES
BROAD ASTBURY SHORT
LAMBERT MARTIN EDWARDS
BUTLER RIEWOLTD RIOLI
WELLER LYNCH HIGGINS
NANKERVIS PRESTIA COTCHIN
ELLIS GRAHAM HOULI BALTA

EMERG: MCINTOSH SOLDO MARKOV BAKER

Be interesting to see what happens when Caddy and George are fit they are easily best 22 most likely Graham Butler and Ellis under the most pressure

Richmond’s Round 4 team

B Nathan Broad, David Astbury, Dylan Grimes
HB Nick Vlastuin, Shane Edwards, Connor Menadue
C Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Ross, Dion Prestia
HF Daniel Rioli, Jack Graham, Jason Castagna
F Josh Caddy, Liam Baker, Tom Lynch
Foll Toby Nankervis, Kane Lambert, Jack Higgins
I/C Brandon Ellis, Sydney Stack, Noah Balta, Shai Bolton

If Dusty comes in, potentially Menadue comes out Although he played ok.
Stack to HBF, Ross to the bench.

I get the feeling we wont risk jack with the Wednesday back up against Melb
Possibly the same for Houli, won't risk the soft tissue with the 4 day break

It should be Castagna to come out for Dusty.

Shedda off the half back line actually happened this time.

Not sure we will give up our fwd pressure, even though George has been below ave...

Second thought, it may be Graham that goes out, Ross plays the role he has been playing... everything else remains the same???

Could be. I thought Graham was in our worst on Saturday. He's prone to some really bad mistakes so far this year.

My best 22 with everyone bar Rance available:

B: Broad, Astbury, Vlastuin
HB: Edwards, Grimes, Houli
C: McIntosh, Prestia, Lambert
HF: Bolton, Riewoldt, Higgins
F: Castagna, Lynch, Caddy
R: Nank, Dusty, Cotchin
Int: Stack, Ross, Graham, Balta

What’s the job security like for Ross & Stack?

Both likely to stay in for a while, or to get dropped with Dusty & Cotchin back soon?

Stack looks secure for a while while Short is out (8ish weeks) and probably beyond then too
Not so sure on Ross though

Thanks mate. More just role based yeah with Short out?

Ross looked awesome, I would rather keep him in and push Graham/Menadue back to VFL... be interesting to see how it plays out.

Re stack I think so, he’s shown more in that rebounding position than anyone else (Houli and Short aside)
As for up the ground, I simply have no idea what’s happening. There’s potential for best 22 changes but with Ross you really are banking on his next few weeks being enough to convince the coaching staff he is best 22 because there’s a few handy players coming back. If he keeps performing like he did on Saturday, he will do that. But it’s certainly a risk to take him in your team (of course, I assume you’re researching for some fantasy side)

hmm with all being fit bar Rance Grigg

Grimes - Astbury - Vlastuin
Houli - Balta - Stack

Ross - Cotchin - Edwards
Nankervis - Martin - Prestia

Rioli - Riewoldt - Bolton
Higgins - Lynch - Caddy

McIntosh - Lambert - Graham - Broad - Baker - RC-D

Im still bullish that Balta's best position is chb and that he is the most likely we have to replace Rance and the fact imo we need two players of genuine kpd size in the team.

I am still bullish that we need a few bigger players spread thu the team thats why Ross starts and im hoping RC-D does enough to warrant games and why id have Grigg in the team when fit as well.

B: Dylan Grimes, Dave Astbury, Nathan Broad
HB: Nick Vlastuin, Alex Rance, Sydney Stack
C: Kamdyn McIntosh, Dion Prestia, Bachar Houli
HF: Shane Edwards, Tom Lynch, Kane Lambert
F: Daniel Rioli, Jack Riewoldt, Josh Caddy
Foll: Toby Nankervis, Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin
Int(from): Liam Baker, Noah Balta, Brandon Ellis, Jason Castagna, Jack Higgins, Jayden Short, Jack Ross, Shai Bolton.

Thats my 26. Might be a few blokes out of position in the 18. But I wanted to highlight the 18 that’s ahead of the eight IMO.

Not bad when there’s 4 premiership players that don’t even make the extended bench (Butler, Grigg, Graham, Townsend).
