So how does Baguley fit into this policy when he started in the backline last year? Is he the exception to the rule that you can’t play in another role? What about Hooker?

I’m not having a go at you or saying you’re wrong, simply pointing out they don’t stick to it all the time, so why not make exceptions here?

Might be the younger players that go into a certain box, eg Langford as a mid will never be selected as a forward.

Also, I suspect Baguley will make way for Laverde when he is ready. I think the coaches are very fixed on our team balance when it comes to the amount of forwards, midfielders and defenders we have in the side. Smith is presumably the one replacing Parish in the midfield.

We are playing good against really ordinary sides. We will know more after today
You beat who is in front of you. If we scraped past those sides, I'd be a bit less optimistic. However, we're destroying them which is what good teams do. Today will show us where we are as a side.

That occurred to me too, that maybe they don’t want to screw around with someone learning a craft. But then Guelfi has been played back and middle. If it’s just older players, why not try McNiece forward? He is fast, disciplined and a better kick.

In the end I like Baguley and hope he does well but don’t like the double standards applied to team selection. It sends the wrong message IMO.

Don't confuse things with common sense!

Mitch Brown playing CHB last year. Guelfi back pocket, half back and midfield. Pretty sure they squeezed Myers a game at half back last year.

Hooker was moved to the back half group last pre season and has been pretty much a lock there. They still see him as a player that can be moved forward but he trains with the defenders and they have gone with Brown or McKernan as forwards ahead of him being a forward. When Hooker was used as a forward they stuck by him there.

They moved Bagually forward last year to try and find some pressure in the forward half and that is where he has trained and played since.

Parish has been training with the midfield group as has Langdon. He will play midfield in the VFL on Saturday .

They do not actually break from it much at all. Personally I would make an exception as well but it is pretty structured with what they do. The young players all play in the positions they are likely to be used at AFL level when they are in the VFL. There are the odd changes made like Bagualy when they have struggled and needed something new in the forward half.

What I do see is despite us punters having a strong opinion they are not going to change a lot about a side that is winning other than being forced by injury or returning players. They will back in players (which happens at all clubs and all levels) to get the job done and while you are winning games well and form type selections are reasonably rare.

Yeah I do understand all that and we’ll know a lot more when Laverde and Begley are putting more pressure on selection but they still do pick and choose when to make an exception.

Like I said above I still like Bags and will cheer him on but think this is another time they could make an exception.

It's good when you think about it in the context of Langford.

We've been shoehorning him into the middle of the ground since 2016. 2016!!!

It's the most frustrating part of footy. The coaches very rarely admit when they get it wrong and they do frequently. Happens all the time. We actually get this insight into football much more than we think. Goodwin will not change. Pike doesn't change. Richardson spent all year last year refusing to change.

Worsfold basically had to be threatened with his job before we changed last year. Even then, they have to invent things like blaming Neeld (Melbourne is now starting to blame McCartney) before they'll change.

Edit: and in response to the sentiment that "the side is winning therefore team selection is correct", I'll accept it only when we win a premiership. At any point in time, we unjustifiably handicapping ourselves.

I agree 100%. I would have left Parish in and Played Smith in the forward line.

So aside from selection dramas;

Does anyone know what time all the pre-game stuff kicks off today?
Usually around 1 for a 3:20 game

Bags would be seen by our coaches as one of our experienced Senior players I am guessing? Is he being afforded more time to hopefully find form?

If the team had not found form my feelings are he would not have held his spot and the coaches would have moved a Smith type fwd. But when you are winning it buys time and our coaches are giving him every chance to perform. Winning has allowed them to keep to their structured approach of selecting players in groups. If we were losing and the season was on the line I think they may have buckled out of desperation to get Ws and maybe broken away from this policy.

I remember Hurley (and I know he is no Hurley) has taken 4 or 5 games to get going in the past couple of years and was afforded time to find form. I wonder if this is our approach with him. Personally I would have dropped him and he is skating on very thin ice.

I glad you mention this. Going by the fishbowl laments I see here on a weekly basis (about players like Myers in particular), you'd think it's only Essendon.

"wouldn't get a game at any other club muhhhhhhhh"

Stringer, Daniher or Shiel for the medal?

It would be an amazing turnaround if Daniher received the medal. String and Shiel are definitely realistic. More than happy for Joey to just present enable Stringer / Walla / Fanta to rip the game apart
